My father is Vice-Admiral Jerome Cates and he’s semi-retired these days. He’s actually the first Starfleet officer I encountered at Starbase 87. Poor man couldn’t understand half of what I said to him because it took years for the Universal translator to be able to fully translate my native tongue,” she said with great fondness. “Cates… Cates. I think I met him once. Function on Jupiter Station my Mom dragged me to. Seemed like a decent guy.” Marusk said. “Did you live on Earth long?”

“Nine years, including my time at the Academy,” Relann said with a smile, though she was also pensive. “Jerome actually didn’t like the idea of my joining, but it was one of those rare times I began to talk about life back on my homeworld and I think he began to understand. And I think the part I didn’t fully understand was that it was my way of giving back, of saying thank you for the new life I was given. It could of gone so many different ways after I fled, but I’ve been incredibly fortunate.”

“My mom always said we make our own fortune. I believe that. I doubt fortune, or luck, or fate had anything to do with it. You made the change you needed.”

A serene sort of smile came to her face as she gazed at Mardusk. “Well, you already know a bit about my people’s beliefs, but for us there is a deeper connection to the Universe at large. Something we believe we can feel.” She wasn’t sure this was the conversation to invoke the Spirits, but then again, they weren’t deities. *We believe that there is balance and order in everything, and we can choose to listen and be in harmony, or we can choose the path of greater struggle. Each has its moments of usefulness and growth, and neither is inherently better than the other. But for us, we believe, or rather we used to believe, that we each had a purpose. Do you believe you have a purpose, Mardusk?”
