Three of Five walked into the mess hall with his bag hanging off his shoulder. He got food from the replicator and sat at a table. He opened the bag and pulled out a crochet doll partially complete. It’s body was fully formed except the head, and it was wearing a starfleet uniform that looked similar to the captain’s. He pulled out his needles and started crocheting the head of the doll, periodically stopping to eat.

Kelly walked the mess hall looking for a place to sit down. The mess hall was the great equalizer. Everyone ate the same thing regardless of rank and today it was a tan swirl of what she was told contained Chicken. Seeing the engineering officer, Kelly decided to sit down at the table. She knew who he was but hadn’t really spent any time with him. “Mind if I sit,” she asked standing with her tray.

“No, ma’am, not at all.” He stated, he put the doll down and stood up out of respect to her rank. Even after being kidnapped and assimilated by the Borg and eventually severing his connection, he knew his mother would haunt him if he didn’t mind his manners like she taught him.

“Lost art,” she nodded to Three of Five as she took a long sip of her coffee before picking up her sandwich. “Did you learn that as a kid or pick it up later in life,” Kelly took a bite and waited for his reply.

“My mother taught me. Really started perfecting the skill right before the invasion and assimilation of our homeworld. I didn’t lose the skill.” He told the Captain. “Now it helps me remember her. But also, this project, I’m making one of all the personnel on board so we can display them for future generations of this vessel to know it’s history.” He continued.

“As long as you leave out the history of the exploding sonic blob, the time Nash and I got the goat from Perkins birthday party, the arrival of the religious cult trio, the time we started a brawl on Base five with the Endorians,” she started to rattle off the less than stellar moments of the crew over the past year or so. It was sarcastic but the amusement in Kelly’s voice showed she found the litany she was sharing rather humorous. Some ships prided themselves on perfect missions and officers that were so spit and polish they looked and acted like Madame Trousseau figures. Kelly had always seen the best in her officers when times were at their worst. How you handled yourself at your worst always spoke to your true character.

“So when you are done are you giving them to the crew or planning on displaying them. Betsy Reynolds was just talking to me about updating the ship’s display of the history of the Atlantis. They might be a nice edition to the display.”
