Mardusk read the shirt and said “Truer words I have never seen on garment.” and he laughed. “So… anywhere specific you want to start? Or just take it as it comes?”Mardusk
Cara shrugged and stepped out the door and to the side. “You’re the security chief, you would know the ship better than anyone else. I know nothing about Atlantis…other than she’s got more amenities than the last star base I was stationed to.” She waited for him to pick a direction because she had no idea which way to go. She knew they had approached from the right but after that she wouldn’t be able to tell how to get back to the turbolift they took. Cara had NO internal compass at all. She knew she’d be horribly lost in about 90 seconds, but she wasn’t telling anyone she was that hopeless.
O’Farrell
“Ok, then. Let’s get you familiar with our deck first. That way, you can always just find a lift and say Deck 4 and you’ll be able to find your quarters.” He led her to the right out of her room. As they walked, Mardusk stopped to tell her what section they were in, how to tell what section by the color on the bulkheads or the color on the floor, where to find the section numbers in writing, and how each was attached to the next. He was slow, thoughtful, and didn’t seem to get frustrated when she asked the same question or couldn’t tell where they were the first time around. “I swear, I’m gonna have to put a bell on you so I can find you when you get lost.” he said at one point and laughed. They made a few laps of the deck. He showed her how to get to her room from the Shuttle Bay, and where the guest quarters were. He explained the security patrols on the deck and showed her how to call for help if she needed to. Finally, he said “Okay… close your eyes. Take my hand, and follow me. I’m going to test you.”
Mardusk
She glared at him, “I am not wearing a bell.” Then she grinned at him, “That’s what combadges are for.” She was honest enough to not say she wasn’t that bad, but it was irksome that she hadn’t even gotten lost yet and he knew she was totally lost. That wasn’t fair! She stopped and sighed and looked up at him. “8 years of service, I do know how to call for help. See I tap this shinny metal thing attached to my shirt and it lets me talk to whoever I ask for. Or I can touch the LCARS panel and ask the computer to send help. See, I’m not hopeless.” She was serious but she was teasing. Oh she’d remember it all, of that there was no doubt....like how often the security patrol came by so if she got lost they wouldn’t find her wandering two patrols in a row. She looked up at him, “Close my eyes and follow a near stranger around blindly? Good thing you’re the right shade of green, Gravel.” She placed her hand firmly in his and closed her eyes. She was going to be SO LOST.
O’Farrell
“Well, if you can’t trust me because I’m the Chief of Security; I guess ‘green’ will have to do, then.” He led her slowly around and soon stopped. “Okay, open your eyes. First, tell me what section you are in. Then, take me to your quarters. No comms, no LCARS. What would you do if the power was down and all we had was emergency lighting?”
Mardusk
“Power was down and only emergency lighting? So the ship is in some sort of trouble? I sit my arse on the ground and wait for a patrol to find me. I donna need ta make your work harder by gettin’ myself lost in an emergency, now do I?” The whole time she was mouthing off to his question she was looking around. So she remembered the colors for the sections followed the color spectrum scale followed by white, black, and tan to round out to ten, and the color was black so…section 9, but for the life of her, despite remembering what he said about how it was connected, that didn’t mean she was able to orient herself to the mental image in her head. She couldn’t see the number on the room they stopped next to either because the man was massive and standing in front of it. She turned looking across the corridor, 4209 and 4211. So were they one up or one down from her door. Since he was blocking the door they were standing by she was going to make a poor guess that it was his door. But she also remembered what he’s said to ops when he’d called them about the crates. “Section 9, zone Alpha, and right there” and she pointed, with more confidence than she actually felt, at the door to her left when facing him.

Mardusk grinned…
… and slowly jerked a thumb at the door to her right. “Ooohhh… so close.” he chided her in a friendly tone. “Looks like We need to take another lap.” and he smiled. “Naw, I’m kidding. You’ll get it. It just takes time.” and he turned and walked them slowly past her door and to the lift. “I’ll show you the fun parts now. We’ll work on familiarization some other time.” and he laughed.
Mardusk
Cara sighed to herself. She was never going to live it down, because every time she got turned around he’d know…he was her neighbor. “Oh so I’m get second tour too?” She laughed and stepped into the lift when it arrived.
O’Farrell
“If you like.” Gravel said with a smile.
They exited on Deck 11, and Mardusk walked her around the bend in the passageway. “The bend here follows the edge of the saucer section.” he said matter-of-factly. Soon, they came to a cool colored and somewhat relaxing area. “Counseling suites. Six rooms and your office. All at your disposal. Only ones with access normally are you and me and the Skipper. That keeps records and such private.” He walked her to an office door and it opened. “This is you, if you want to see.”
Mardusk
Cara walked in and looked around. Cara wasn’t aware but Runa hadn’t changed anything. The office was still covered in earth tones, browns, deep reds, a few blues, and greens. There was no desk to be found, a large shelving unit taking up an entire wall, the only thing on it an LCARS access display that seemed to be connected to the room’s speakers. There were chairs of differing compositions, floor pillows, and a massive reinforced couch. Whoever had been in this office before her, had taken the time and made the effort to make sure everyone who came here was comfortable and was accepted for themselves. On a small table next to a comfortable but not relaxing chair sat two PaDDs. Cara walked over and picked them up, glancing at them. Her eyes widened slightly and then she nodded to herself. “I like the colors.” She walked back out the door. “I’ll get more time here later. What’s next?”
O’Farrell
“Next is the work stuff… then the fun stuff… then dinner.” And sure enough, that is exactly what they did. Sickbay, Engineering, Science, Security… and all the work spaces in between. Gravel took her form one end of Atlantis to the other, from the top to the bottom. Then and only then did he start in on the holosuites, the Rec Center, the gym, the Arboretum, the school, and the finally… the Lounge.
Cara was all kinds of twisted around. She would never find her way back to any of those places on her own. Not for awhile anyway. And then they started in on the recreational areas and started the tour all over again. She had a feeling he was purposely dragging her back and forth just to tease her. That was okay, first time she got really lost she’d just blow up his com. The idea made her eyes dance but she didn’t say anything.
“And here we are on our final stop… and also where we will eat. Replicators are there…” and he pointed, “… and fresh food is there. If you want to tell me what you want, I’ll fetch and bring it over. You can grab us that table by the window.” he suggested.
Mardusk
Cara looked over at the fresh food options. The meds were working so, “Thank you, Gravel, anythin’ fresh, as long as there’s no fish. I’m allergic.” She moved over towards the table and put her back towards the windows. Sitting still or at impulse she could stare at the stars all day long, but the weird streaks that seemed to never move and stay stationary while she could feel the ship moving gave her vertigo and made her sick to her stomach without the meds. Hopefully in a few days it wouldn’t matter, but she didn’t feel like pushing her luck.
O’Farrell
Gravel nodded and came back a few minutes later with bangers and mash, sautéed mushrooms, steamed vegetables, peas, corn, marinated beef kabobs. “Didnt know exactly, so I hot an assortment. Now… what would you like to drink?” he asked.
Mardusk
“I don’t suppose they have Guinness?” Cara laughed, “Joking, maybe another time. Strawberry lemonade.” The food smelled amazing and despite earlier she was suddenly hungry.
