: Faye stood there and nodded mutely, feeling her heart racing. As the Captain left, she exhaled to herself.

: : Tyler walked in at that moment. He was surprised to pass the Captain on his way in.

: : “Captain,” He said, giving the woman a nod.

“Tyler,” Kelly said nodding at her officer and pausing for a moment. “I need to speak with you at some point today. Stop by my office at the end of your shift or at your earliest convenience,” she said before turning and walking out of the science labs.

: : Walking over to where Faye was working, he leaned back against the bulkhead, crossing his arms across his chest, looking at her quizzically. “What was that all about?” He asked, nodding his head towards the doorway.

: Faye looked up at tyler and there was a strange mix of emotions on her face. “Committing career suicide, apparently,” she said, with a surprising amount of sadness in her voice. She frowned and shook her head. “The Captain asked if I wanted to be Chief of Science. I said I was unsure, so… yeah, that conversation ended quickly.” She laughed without humour. “At least I have my plants. Yay me.” Ahh, sarcasm- that felt better.

Tyler let out a sigh. “She asked me to stop by her office after my shift.” He knew that they’d had trouble keeping department heads in the science department, and he was a little surprised that his name would even be considered for such a position, if indeed that was what the Captain meant to ask him.

“So I heard,” Faye replied with a tiny nod.

“Do you think she’s going to offer it to me?” Tyler asked, clearly seeking her advice, judging by the concerned nature of his tone.

“Probably. You’re also one of the more senior scientist’s in the department, and likely more qualified in this very moment than I am anyway.” Faye studied him intently for a moment. “Are you going to say yes if she does? Just warning you, you might really want to have your answer together in your head first.”
