Night went on as their bodies became one in a blissful night of love and passion. The two had issues to work out, no one would know how they got caught up in such a mess but Ian felt at peace as he saw Kelly slip into a passion induced coma in his arms. As eyelids fell heavy and morning crept up Ian felt himself waking, his mind a haze as he got back to reality.
Ian could feel the heat of Kelly next to him as he woke, his mind flooding and beginning to remember all that they said and did. Looking over at her Ian wondered how much they made a mistake rushing. Ian knew he loved her, and part of him truly loved the idea of being married and kids with her. This though was only the beginning for them.
Don’t be awake… Ian said to himself as he tried to slide out from the bed. He needed time, time to process everything. He wanted to move forward with her, and he wanted what they had now, but not now. Or did he want it now? He couldn’t make up his mind and if he smelled her perfume in their bed for one more moment he may break down and do something worse.
Oh god Kelly. Okay stay loose and keep your breathing rhythmic. Just like they taught you in survival school. If they think are you unconscious they will move on to someone else. Chicken butt way out of this but you need to figure out what to say to him besides, ‘hey that twist thing you did last night was amazing” Herman Hornsby was right when he said you would never realize how handy the opossum maneuver would be one day, Kelly’s mind raced as she worked on pretending she was asleep. It was not that she didn’t want to wake up, tuck the blankets around her and ask Ian if he was getting them coffee. It was that Kelly needed time to think. Nothing they had done over the past nine months, including the shotgun nuptials, felt inherently wrong. It honestly felt right but they were not a pair of nineteen-year-old kids in the Academy with stars in their eyes and a future open to anything. She and Ian were adults with real adult responsibilities that went far past did they click on a romantic level. She had her career and his to think about. Tongues would wag and someone sometime would see a decision she made based on her heart rather than her head. That is just what happened when you were in a floating tin Noah’s Ark. Was she ready to try and balance not just silly flirtations and the job but real love for someone else?
Then there were her parents, his parents and the backlash of her mom claiming Ian was looking for a fast track to the command seat and his mom claiming Kelly was just looking for a younger boy toy. The real implications of their marriage made her head hurt.
Edging from the bed, Ian snuck out hoping to talk to someone else, someone who knew him better than anyone he could think of.

Please close the door so you won’t wake me. Please close the door so you won’t wake me. Come on Ian. You are a nice guy. Nice guys do that. It will also give me a chance to prep before you come back. You are like a damn cat sometimes, Kelly continued to try and will events to turn out the way she needed them too. When she heard the door woosh shut, she let out the breath she was holding and rolled onto her back. For the first moment ever in their relationship Kelly first the first twinge of regret. Smelling his cologne on the pillow next to her, she could no longer think about families and ships and water cooler talk. All she could think about was how happy she would have been if they had done this right.
Captain Kelly Shutlz
Ian left, shutting the door behind as he found the office area. Sitting down by the computer he found himself running his hands through his hair as he thought on all the things that happened. How could someone feel ecstatic and terrified all at the time same time? Ian said he needed to handle this, and he would. He knew he couldn’t go to his mother, but he did have another option.
“Harrison…” he said softly to himself, Harrison was a childhood friend he grew up with. Harrison Alexander was the son of the ranch head who helped his father until he retired. The two grew up and got into more mischief that should have been allowed for two young boys. This lead to the pair bonding as the became best friends. In many ways Harrison became the brother Ian never had.
When Harrison got older, he didn’t follow his dad, but instead mimicked Ian’s mother and went into law. He even become a member of her law firm, and if anyone would be able to help both legally and also be supportive it would be him.
Waiting for the call to connect, Ian smiled briefly trying to get his mind out of the current situation.
“You devil, how the hell are you Ian? What do I owe this pleasure man? It’s been ages.” Harrison started, smiling wide. Ian kept in touch with Harrison, but they hadn’t had face to face in almost three years. Ian paused, not quite sure where to begin as he began to unfold everything.
Harrison stayed quiet, nodding as his friend poured his heart out to him. He certainly looked a bit shell shocked, Ian could always be seen as impulsive, but falling for his Captain and getting married to her in some shady unincorporated district seemed new for even him. “Is that all?” he asked, as he looked at Ian as if probing him carefully.
“Does there need to be more? I mean… look I just… I don’t know what I need. It needs to be annulled… fast. I can’t have her reputation damaged cause I forgot to read the fine print. I refuse to let her be hurt at all.” Ian said his voice showing an almost determination. If Harrison felt like there was any doubt in how Ian felt for Kelly it would fade away quickly. He knew his friend, he had never acted this way for any woman.
“How long have you been with her?” Harrison asked, curious about a hunch he had.
“How long? I mean two weeks? Though… I mean, we been working together for over a year. I feel in love with her, very shortly into our working relationship. She is amazingly fun, witty… I never really understood love till I meet her. Then everything became about her, I was so scared to even admit to her my feelings. Now look at us I admit my feelings and I cock it all up.”
“So… you break your curse… you lasted more than six months. Six months Ian… you know we all called you that right? You could never stay with a girl longer than six months, yet you have been working with her in a way that is almost every way like a couple for over a year. You really do have it bad for her don’t you?”
Ian wasn’t sure how to reply to that as he thought about it, Harrison wasn’t wrong, he didn’t stay with anyone for long. “I guess so, and this is why I can’t let my parents know, you have to handle this without anyone being wiser. Can you do this? I want them to meet her and see how amazing she is without thinking of some trash Vegas wedding.” Ian said, knowing his friend would do anything to help him.
“You know I will, I know you would help me out of any jam, hell you have several times over. Let me get some contacts, I will get with the group and I will find out the laws for the sector. I will let you know more via subspace mail and get you all the info. Just… don’t mess this up okay? She sounds amazing and I want to meet her the next time you come to the Ranch.” he said as he disconnected, leaving Ian alone with his thoughts.
Ian looked back at the door and wondered how Kelly was. He didn’t want to make her think he didn’t want to be with her. Getting up slowly he made his way to the door he paused as he turned to the replicator getting her a cup of coffee.
Kelly waited for the door to close before she rolled over on her back staring at the ceiling. Last night was amazing but like an impulse purchase, she was debating her actions the next morning. “Kelly Kelly Kelly what are you doing,” she said to herself in a low voice. “FIrst you tell him he needs this annulled then you role-play the happy housewife for six hours. You want to be married. You don’t want to be married. Figure out what you want,” she slightly chastised herself as she brought down her hand from over her head and looked at her empty ring finger. There paperwork might have made it legal and the feelings were there but it still seemed off. ” Ian is right. We need to annul this. Anything else was crazy. Right,” she ased herself drumming her nails on the sheets. Getting up from the bed, Kelly pulled the first piece of clothing from the floor and made her way to the com station. As the call was connecting she spared a glance over her shoulder. Being a Captain, Kelly had few friends to go to with insane problems. The person on the other end of the comm was the only one Kelly knew could help her think clearly and come up with an answer to her dilemma.
“Hey love,” a woman’s voice filled the room. “You look like you had a fun night,” Linda Shultz said smiling over the cup of coffee she was sipping.
The background of the call made Kelly feel like a warm fuzzy blanket was draped over her shoulders. Kelly turned hearing her mom’s voice. “Hey mom,” she said running her fingers through her hair to push it off her face.
“Tell me it was Ian,” she said with a sly grin. “You only wear a smile like that for one reason and I know he likes you. He talks to me for cripes sake and men barely talk to their own mothers except under duress. Just ask Michael when was the last time he called me.”
“Yes…I mean …no…I mean,” Kelly stumbled over her words.
“So it was that kinda night,” her mom said with mirth coating her words as she stressed the verb. “You know if you asked me , which you won’t but, I would just go for broke with him. He’s cute, funny, charming,” her mom began to list off the assists she saw in the yeoman.
“Yes he is and that is all well and good but we,”

Entering the bedroom he looked around, wondering if she was in bed still or had gotten up.

Ian entered, with just some very loose pajama bottom pants, his top torso still exposed as he found Kelly, hearing another familiar voice. Walking over Ian leaned in and kissed Kelly’s cheek. “Morning Mrs. Shultz,” he said as he placed a cup of coffee in front of Kelly, made the perfect way she always loved. “How are you?” he asked, showing little sign of any nerves he had before. He knew what he wanted, even if things had gone in weird order. He wasn’t ashamed of that.

“I told you to call me Lin or Linda,” Kelly’s mom said waving Ian off with a flip of her hand at the screen. “So Kelly was about to tell me the current issue she has stuck in her head… most probably about you,” Linda said with a smirk.
“Mah mum,” Kelly drawled out her mother’s name like she was a teen and this was her first boy crush. “Ex nay on the Ian ay,” she gritted her teeth. Calling her mom was not the ideal thing to do right now.
“So are you on duty,” Kelly looked up at Ian. It was her polite way of asking Ian to leave. Last night she swore that if Ian mentioned this to anyone he would suffer death and dismemberment by a hormonal Klingon female. Now he was walking into a room where Kelly was about to spill all the beans to her mother of all people.
“Nope, not at all… but I can go back to bed and wait for you two to stop gabbing, but seriously
“No honey I am retired,” she mom said with a half laugh knowing full well that her daughter was not talking to her. “I have all morning and afternoon if you need it. I do have a tee time at 1:45 but this shouldn’t take that long should it?”
Captain Kelly Shultz
“You keep her for as long as you need, we can hash out our stuff once she hashes it with you.” Ian said, kissing her head before finally walking away.

Kelly looked back at her mom with a deer on the head lights expression. She was unsure what to say. Why she started this conversation at this time Kelly would never be able to answer. Linda craned her head slightly watching Ian lie down in the bed behind her daughter with a PaDD and cup of coffee. There was no hesitation when Ian sat down. It was fluid and dynamic like he did it every night.
“Kelly, love, what is going on? You are at the my side-your side of the bed phase,” she asked her daughter point blank. “Are you pregnant?”
“Nooooo,” Kelly stared at her mom with abject shock and horror on her face.
“Affair,”
“Mah mom. He is in the room,” Kelly almost yelled and gestured wildly behind her towards Ian on the bed.
“And since he kissed you that means Ian is not mad at you or tends to forgive easily. That is a good quality in a man,” Linda took a sip of her coffee.
“You know what mom I really should go,” Kelly hooked thumb at the man behind her. “How about I call you tonight huh,”. Kelly decided to was beat to cut this diplomatic event off at the knees.
“Of course. Good bye Ian,” Linda Shultz said in a cheerful tone.
After several attempts to hang up Kelly was finally successful. “So can we say awkward,” Kelly laughed turning in her chair to look at Ian.

“Well I didn’t have an issue, people will know in time. Jump out in front of it… live dangerously… Mrs. Bordeaux.” he said with a wink as he smirked at her. He loved being able to tease her and despite all the feelings the two had, the desire to make her smile was always first in his mind. “Besides, I like your mom, she’s funny.” he as he crawled to the edge of the bed so he could be closer to her.
“Everything… everything will be fine, don’t worry.” he said reassuringly, as he reached out and squeezed her hand.

“Mrs. Bordeaux. Mrs. Ian Bordeaux,” Kelly said as if mulling it over. Glancing down at the man sprawled on her bed, she took on a serious expression. “You now the paperwork to change that from Shutlz to Bordeaux would take an army. “I think Mr. Shultz has a nice ring to it. You’re progressive right?” Kelly fought not to break out in a grin. She may have a several big honkin’ space guns capable of obliterating life on any planet and few hundred tons of horsepower under her arse each time she sat down in the big chair but Kelly Shultz was still a woman first and foremost. There was not reason why she should be in love with Ian. None of it made sense but she was and Kelly was content with this development.

“You’re funny.” he said as he threw a pillow at her. “Get over here.” he said softly, the night had been fun but the morning was going to be even better he felt, married or not he knew he wanted the woman in front of him.
