Ghubari couldn’t help but smile, despite the pang of anguish she could sense and see in the other woman. “Well, Akeela is an unconventional woman living in a traditional society that rejects modern technology entirely. Not because they are afraid of it, but because they feel their society is stronger for the reliance on traditions and the will of the Ancestors. But at one point my mother was compelled to leave not just her village but venture elsewhere on Earth. And there she met a Napean by the name of Loqaron Koraia. He was between assignments with Starfleet and they spent a couple months together. He went back to his ship and career and my mother had a baby many months later.” She put a hand to her chest. “Me.”

Ghubari inhaled. “My mother raised me on her own knowing my father had built his own life. So it was only that a few years ago as an adult that we finally met” She grinned slightly. “It’s awkward a lot of the time, but he’s a good man. Good enough that he married my husband and I.”

Amber eyes shone like a young girl hearing a fairy story and Ghubari smiled. “I would love to meet her… and him. My Father was so embarrassed about his dalliance with my mother when she was a slave on Psi Upsilon IV he had her sent away and kept my human heritage secret. One of the things Julien promised me was to help me find her… or at least find out if she’s still alive.”

They both knew it wasn’t going to happen and nor could Ghubari allow it. It was bad enough that she dragged her ship and crew to another universe, but she couldn’t allow anyone from the other universe to come back with them. It was out of the question. But the reality for them here, of the life Akeela had lived struck Ghubari deeply. She understood it intellectually based on the history here, but the actually know the details of it was an entirely different thing.

“So who is your husband? Julien?”

A bark of laughter filled the space between them. “Oh goodness , no.” She held up a hand to hold off any immediate response. “Julien is a lovely man, but we’re only friends. We both were at a low point in our lives and were working through them at the same time. No, I married a Betazoid man named Konral. He’s my Chief of Security, actually.”

“You’ve had to hide your identity your whole life,” she said thoughtfully. “What would happen if anyone else found out?”

Ghubari looked up briefly at the name “Konral”, it was obvious she had never heard it before. “Up until the insurrection, humans were chattel, slaves. If that part of my life was discovered it would have discredited my father as an ambassador and I most likely would have been taken. When I found out I wanted to join the Terran rebellion but father wouldn’t let me, he even went as far as to say that the discovery would mean my mother would be used against the Napean people through my father. It wasn’t until later that I found out that he doesn’t even know whether she’s still alive…”

She could feel the emotions from her counterpart and she knew Ghubari could sense her sadness. “I’m sorry. I hope that you have the opportunity to meet her. He might not be wrong though. I may not know a great deal about this universe but what I do know is that you have certain variable to contend with that I don’t. Don’t discount them, as painful as it is.” It was strange to be talking yourself this way, but at the same time Ghubari could recognize that this other woman with her face was not her.
