While waiting fro the Athena to eventually turn up again, Viyara had decided to work on one of her personal projects. She hadn’t actually asked permission to use one of the science labs. But she was a Starfleet Science Officer, so why shouldn’t she? And who would notice anyway? The personnel on starbases always seemed to be a little more in flux than on ships and they currently had the crew of the Ogawa stranded here as well, waiting for the ship to be repaired. Thus in all likelihood the science staff from the Starbase would assume she was part of the Ogawa’s crew and vice verse. Which should leave her free to do whatever she liked.

Right now that meant testing a theory she had developed the night before. So here she stood alone in the lab, looking at her experiment set up, making sure everything was connected properly. The most prominent feature as a large Liebig condenser. On the left hand side of it stood a Bunsen burner and hanging over it was a round-bottom flask with a fractionating column and a thermometer attached to it. The fractionating column was then attached to the Liebig condenser and underneath the end of it stood another glass flask. Once she was satisfied that everything was set up properly, Viyara turned on the Bunsen burner. Now all she had to do was wait.

A while later, the dark haired Trill swapped the glas flask at the end of the set up, for an empty one. Moving to a neighbouring table, she put the flask down and then inserted a pipette into the liquid. After filling it was liquid, she dropped a few drops in each of the five test tubes in front of her. At first nothing or very little seemed to happen to the liquid within. But suddenly a hissing sound came from the third one and the liquid within seemed to boil. She cursed loudly, but was too late to try and do anything about it. Instead watched the test tube break and the surface of the work desk blister when it came in contact with the liquid. That was not what she had expected.

The space station was a big place. Were they all this big? Juvri had decided to the explore the place - she was stuck here for the next who knows how long anyway. Best know where the best nooks and crannies are. She was headed past a lab. Science had never been… exactly her thing, so she preferred to steer clear. Until she heard someone cursing and then something broke. Turning into the lab the sounds had come from, she got an eyeful of a situation. Another Ensign in a science uniform, stood over a desk which now bubbled and blistered.

Clearly a science accident, but Juvri found herself saying, “What did you do?”

At the sound of her voice, Viyara looked up. “I successfully disproved my own theory,” she replied offhandedly. Taking a step back, she leaned against the desk behind her, both hands resting on its surface. She seemed to radiate confidence and there was more than just a hint of mischievousness in her smile. Yet if Juvri payed attention to what lay beneath the surface, she might be able to sense some darker emotions the other woman was apparently trying to stuff away in the deepest realms of her psyche. As she stood there, she let her heterochromatic eyes wander slowly up and down the whole length of Juvri’s body; taking in not only her appearance, but also her body language.

Juvri was, as usual, doing her best to ignore Viyara’s emotions. Her body language was that of someone who was not overly confident. She kept her arms near her body. She stood with perfect posture, but her shoulders ever so slightly hunched inward. Her eyes usually searched the floor.

“Disproved your theory, huh? Maybe you did a little more than that?” She said, feeling a stab of uncertainty that for some reason, the words would make Viyara angry. She gestured towards the work table. “Looks like a bit of a mess, huh?”

Viyara laughed good-naturedly and said, “Well, that is the risk of being a chemist, or biochemist in my case. And where would the fun be if everything stayed neat and clean all the time even when an experiment goes wrong.” She shrugged and then added with a wink, “And it’s just a desk and a test tube. So nothing that can’t be easily replaced.” Tilting her head slightly, she tried to catch the other woman’s eye. “I’m Viyara Nazeen, by the way, and I promise I don’t bite. What’s your name?” she asked. She wondered why the other officer looked so uncertain and insecure. She hadn’t done anything but stop and ask what happened. And that was nothing anyone would get in trouble for with their superiors.

“Yeah… I suppose it’s not like you melted a precious family heirloom or something, huh?” Juvri responded, shrugging. She wasn’t sure how Viyara could be so… un-worried by how much trouble she could get it for doing something like that. Surely their superiors would be less than pleased?

Viyara nodded. “Exactly. Neither did I blow up the lab. That kinda thing does tend to get you into trouble,” she chuckled and winked. “If the Chief Science Officer got angry every time there is relatively minor damage due to an experiment going wrong, they would be angry all the time.”

She brought her gaze up briefly, when Viyara said she didn’t bite, but soon after she went back to studying the floor. She clutched her singular bag, which she’d been toting around with her, closely. “Juvri Dei. I’m uh, gonna be a Security officer on the Athena. You know… when it gets here…” she said, her voice getting quieter as she said ‘when it gets here’.

“Another one waiting for the Athena to return, ey?” Viyara asked as she pushed off the table behind her. “Is the Athena going to be your first posting?” she continued as she turned of the Bunsen burner and and then slowly started to take apart the set up of her experiment. It didn’t make sense to try again without looking at her formulas and everything, for clearly she had made a mistake somewhere. And while she didn’t worry about getting into trouble, she did not like leaving everything sitting around. Chances were too high that people would fiddle with it and that could lead to trouble. And while breaking a flask or testing tube didn’t phase her, she’d rather not blow up another lab. For that had been a rather painful experience.

Standing in the doorway as Viyara began cleaning up the equipment, Juvri nodded in response to her question. She’d honestly been rather terrified of starting on the Athena… mostly because, at the academy, some of the others that gave her a hard time had told her the most awful things about the Chief of Security. They were lying of course. Who knew if they even knew who the Athena’s Cheif of Security was? But Juvri hadn’t known that - and she’d quietly worried ever since.

Still, the few she’d met from the Athena, here on the starbase, were really nice. “What about you, you been on a starship before?” Juvri asked Viyara, after a moment of silence slightly too long. She could tell that Viyara wasn’t the least bit worried, and in a way, that was rather comforting to her.
