Ghubari stepped right close to ‘Merri’ and reached out her hand, resting it on the other woman’s arm. She shook her head. “You can’t. Not unless there is a very good reason. You have to trust us to do what we can. Trust my crew. Trust me,” she said intently, fixing her gaze on the grown alternate universe child of her dear friends. A part of her wanted to shout down to Sickbay for an update, but they would tell her when there was something to know. She had been a commanding officer long enough to know that she just had to let go of having control over every situation and let her crew get on with whatever was needed.

Merri steeled herself and looked into Ghubari’s eyes, “You’re right” she said biting her lip, then fire came into her eyes and for a minute she looked just like her father, “Let’s get to business shall we”. She was studiously avoiding looking at the control panel but her face was set like stone.

Turning again to Va’rek, she spoke clearly and succinctly, “Your part is to be a receptive telepathic bridge, the meld can be held by another.”

The Vulcan turned from the panel and faced the others once more. He’d managed to cut the power to the Holo Emitters in Sickbay, but he still looked distracted as he turned his hazel eyes to the Captain and Merri. Anyone with empathic ability would feel the pang of worry he was struggling to hide, about Jessica’s safety. As well as the growing dread he felt about being used in a telepathic manner. His voice nearly shook when he spoke. He didn’t want to address the issue Merri was bringing up. It would hurt… and then he’d have to explain it to people who had no business knowing his inner turmoil or the wounds he carried.

“It shames me.” He began, “However, I fear my participation would only be a detriment to your goal… I have… My feelings have been out of balance. I suspect my being connected to such an endeavor would only make it more difficult to sustain, and might even cause emotional or mental damage to others.” His eyes dropped as he hung his head.

Ghubari gazed intently at the engineer, her pale amber eyes full of understanding. As much as she wanted to address Va’rek’s issue, now was not the time. But nor was it the time for doubts. “You’d be amazed what can be accomplished in a moment of great need,” she said thoughtfully. “An open mind, perhaps, is all that is required,” she suggested. Meanwhile, the other part of her mind was preoccupied with whatever was going on down in Sickbay that had suddenly moved them into crisis mode (or more so than it had so far).

His shoulders straightened and he lifted his head, nodding silently as he composed himself. He was still afraid, and still worried about Sickbay and other things, but Va’rek found he couldn’t refuse such a duty as this.

“Alright,” He began. “What must I do?”

Merri’s mousy facade was deliberately dropped as she straightened and looked Va’rek in the eye with both kindness and resolve. “You will save two universes from destruction, in fact you are destined to do so. If you cannot believe in yourself, then lean on my belief in you, because I believe that the actions necessary will flow from you as naturally as the breath coming into and out of your lungs”.
