The broad shouldered older man, no one mistakenly applied gentle to him, with an oft broken nose, and intense dark green eyes wandered past the doorway into sickbay. While he appeared a man not used to waiting, he seemed perfectly capable of doing so. He was not a handsome man, not in any sense of the word, solid, rugged, those might apply, but he was just north of homely, and about twenty minutes south of average. His eyes conveyed, implacability, conviction, and intelligence, that was at odds with his bruiser’s build and appearance. The five o’clock shadow that coated his cheeks and jaw, gave him a more disreputable appearance. If not for the collar pips and uniform it might be easy to mistake him for some enforce from an Orion Syndicate Cartel, or other Nefarious occupation. Horace just stepped to the side and waited to complete his on boarding physical.MCPO Horace Harkness, Chief of the Boat
Cara twirled the end of her black braid with one hand as she fussed with the equipment making sure everything worked. It had been a few days of getting to know the files and her crewmen who would be coming in for regular care and those who would just need regular work ups for her reports. So far coffee from the nearby replicator kept her going as she tried to get her bearings in her new post. Cara placed down the pad she was reading and looked as Harkness came through the sickbay doors. She hadn’t seen him before so it was clearly a new crew member in need of a physical. She noted the nose that looked as if it had been broken and wondered how much other scaring the man had that hadn’t been taken care of properly. He was clearly a tough sort. This was her first patient so she wasn’t about to pass up the opportunity. Taking a breath Cara straightened her uniform and walked up to Major Harkness giving him smile with kind dark green eyes.
“Hello, I’m Doctor Cara Daniels, I’ll be administering your physical. Please follow me sir,” Cara informed him and then led the man to the nearest open examining station.
“Just have a seat on the biobed,” Cara instructed and then ran a medical scanner over the main places to scan and kept an eye on the results.
“How are we feeling today? Anything feel different from the last time you were examined,” Cara asked kindly as she pulled him his records.-Ensign Cara Daniels-Doctor
Horace nodded, and followed the doctor as instructed. It was an easy enough order to follow. Master Chief Petty Officer Horace Harkness had been through dozens of these physicals, and mostly he had been cleared every time. He had been cleared every time since he had gotten married, his wife was a stickler, and made certain he did as instructed even when she was in a different quadrant. When the doctor stopped at specific bed and told him to hop on it, once again he did as instructed. Well it was not much of a hop, it was a shift and slide climb kind of thing, with a bit of a groan, and a smile. His voice was deep hoarse and gravel edged, with the aged quality of a man that had done this a time or two prior, and often expected his words to be followed without questions.
“Well Doc, I feel like a middle aged man that works for a living” Horace stated with a simple smile, then continued on, “Nothing feels different today than it has for the last few years, just a lot miles on this old carcass.” he added with a shrug.
His files contained a laundry list of old fractures, breaks, bruises, cuts, stabs, phaser burns, Engineering mishaps, and the like. Other than the nose and the sunken knuckles it seemed most had proper medical care. The nose had been broken multiple times in fact, and the hands were listed multiple times for boxers fractures. It seemed in the past the Chief indulged himself in physical confrontation often.

Cara listened to her patient as she finished reading his file. It was amazing just how much this man had been through. He certainly had the make up of someone who had seen plenty of action while in star-fleet.
“From your records it seems like we’ll have to keep an eye on stiffening and swelling in the previously fractured areas,” she commented and then then when the scanner said it was done she looked at the results and smiled.
“So far the scan tells me you are rough on your body Mr. Harkness but you’re in good health even for a middle aged man who works for a living,” Cara told him with a wink. “ After you do your physical tests I can clear you,” She grinned and then asked him to do the standard touch his toes and checked his reflexes.Ensign Cara Daniels-Doctor
Harkness grunted a laugh as he slid forward off the table. Bending over and touching his toes, well nearly he was not as flexible as he used to be. He definitely knew about the stiffness and swelling issues. He kept ointments and pain relievers in his quarters just for that. The one that worked the best had that patented old man smell, but he did not care after a long day. “Thanks Doc, I try, my wife beats me if I don’t” He straightened up with a soft groan, not one of pain but stiffness that comes with age and mileage.
Then settled back on the table so she could check his reflexes. “So you been on the Athena for long? I hear she tends to get into scrapes, and even recently blew up or something, or so the Scuttlebutt says.” Harkness asked as she worked.

Cara typed the results of his physical tests and then looked at Mr. Harkness, “ Well keep listening to your wife. She’s obviously a smart woman. You passed with flying colors,” she told him wondering what kind of fighting he had seen. Cara of course took the standard self defence at that academy but even before then she had trained with a knife fighter on the colony, he had been the paranoid type but he taught her well despite her parents wishes.
“I arrived yesterday. Just your luck to be stuck with the newbie,” cara said with a chuckle, as she relaxed a slight southern accent slipped through, but diluted through time away from home. As Harkness spoke about the ship being blown up before and all their troubles eyes widened a bit.
“Well I’m going to hope for the best. I’m out here to make friends not blow-uh stuff up,” Cara said correcting herself. She didn’t need to start her career off cursing in front of a senior officer. She pressed the button on the bio bed to do just a few more general scans.Ensign Cara Daniels-Doctor
Harkness nodded, “well Doc you know your trade, so day two you’re not doing too bad. She is a smart women, she only has one flaw, some reason she married this guy.” Harkness said and shrugged. He had never understood why Iris loved him, and that was fine he did not need to understand it. “I think she saved me from a lot of fights over the years, if you find you a wild man young lady, get the halter on him quick, or let him go.” there was a touch of sadness in his eyes for a moment, this young doctor was not much older than his Belle should have been. Well the doctor couldn’t answer many more of his questions, but there was no need to be impolite. “I rarely try to blow things up, just tend to be there when it is time to clean up from it, or as it happens.”
The Master Chief shrugged again, and slid off the bed looking about the sickbay. He was the senior most enlisted man on the ship, and that meant he had to meet with a few other people today, and hopefully did not have hang his tunic on a door knob to make any points. Iris really had soured him from fighting, or maybe it was age. At least there were no Marines on board, that had been his oldest pastime in the Starfleet, picking fights with Marines.

“Thanks, it took a lot of studying to get me here, and I’m glad it’s paid off.,” Cara replied warmed by the comment about knowing her trade. It was nice to be validated. Especially considering it was only her first day working in sickbay. When Harkness quipped about a wild young man Cara chuckled, ‘How did you know my type,” she replied with exaggerated shock and turned the scanners off when they were done. she wrote down a few more notes and then looked Harkness again .
“If you ask me, and of course I realize you didn’t, I think Iris is a lucky woman,” Cara said sincerely, after all Harkness was a nice enough man who had been through a lot in his life. Cara pressed send on her notes to give them to the CMO’s office and turned to Harkness with a smile.
“Cleared for duty with only light kicking of behinds,” Cara said with another wink, “good luck out there Chief.”Ensign Cara Daniels-Doctor

Stark had in this instance forgone his usual trick of appearing shadow like at the side of new arrivals. His research on this man suggested that such a tactic would have instantly lead to a fist fight and while that would have been entertaining and instructive Stark hated paperwork with a passion. He therefore strode in boldly which felt extremely wrong and out of character. He nodded first to Cara who he had only just started to get to know and then turned to the man in question.
“Greetings and welcome aboard Chief” He said with a feral grin “Stark Nightstalker, Chief Intelligence Officer, although I hope you won’t hold that against me”.
