Orvos could sense through his minor empathic abilities the heaviness that weighed on her. “Something tells me you’ve had your fair share of mysteries here on the Athena?” he asked as quietly observed their quarters. What a difference it would be if Nico was still there.

“Far too many for my liking,” Koraia said. “In my core, I’m a strategist, aiming for the best outcome for all involved. It tends to make me pragmatic when it comes to variables I can’t control, but it’s also a bit maddening.” She opened her pale amber eyes and set them on the enigmatic engineer. People had used that word to describe her at times, but she had nothing on him. “I don’t pretend to have control at all, but somewhere along the way Orvos I got tricked into believing that I and this ship were key variables to far too many things. It gives you complex after awhile. It makes us dangerous.”

Orvos nodded in understanding. “In the grand scheme of things, we all are like flowers blooming for a season and then gone the next. The universe doesn’t center around us. We simply create a bit of beauty in it for awhile. But, in contrast, the time we have now is ours to live. Are we all truly living, or are we simply alive as we float down the river of life? A great person often never sees themselves as ‘great’. They’re just doing what they felt they ought to do. This ship is full of great people, captain. The generations of flowers that bloom next season depend on the flowers that bloomed before them. So in a sense, you, the crew, the ship…you’re all important to someone.”

He left it at that, curious to her thoughts.

She smiled softly. “And isn’t that an essential truth? We are all impacting people and events whether we like it or not. And maybe you’re right, maybe great people don’t see themselves at that, but I tell you there have been many days that I wish the Universe could single me out just a little tiny bit less.”

Gazing across her quarters, she felt her emotions shift before her mind fully recognized that she had drifted back to that one crucial moment. “Have you ever felt like you were working towards something and then finally got it, but in en entirely different way? Some days I have to seek out ways to confirm this is reality and not some imagined state of being.”
