The broad shouldered older man, no one mistakenly applied gentle to him, with an oft broken nose, and intense dark green eyes wandered past the doorway into sickbay. While he appeared a man not used to waiting, he seemed perfectly capable of doing so. He was not a handsome man, not in any sense of the word, solid, rugged, those might apply, but he was just north of homely, and about twenty minutes south of average. His eyes conveyed, implacability, conviction, and intelligence, that was at odds with his bruiser’s build and appearance. The five o’clock shadow that coated his cheeks and jaw, gave him a more disreputable appearance. If not for the collar pips and uniform it might be easy to mistake him for some enforce from an Orion Syndicate Cartel, or other Nefarious occupation. Horace just stepped to the side and waited to complete his on boarding physical.MCPO Horace Harkness, Chief of the Boat
Cara twirled the end of her black braid with one hand as she fussed with the equipment making sure everything worked. It had been a few days of getting to know the files and her crewmen who would be coming in for regular care and those who would just need regular work ups for her reports. So far coffee from the nearby replicator kept her going as she tried to get her bearings in her new post. Cara placed down the pad she was reading and looked as Harkness came through the sickbay doors. She hadn’t seen him before so it was clearly a new crew member in need of a physical. She noted the nose that looked as if it had been broken and wondered how much other scaring the man had that hadn’t been taken care of properly. He was clearly a tough sort. This was her first patient so she wasn’t about to pass up the opportunity. Taking a breath Cara straightened her uniform and walked up to Major Harkness giving him smile with kind dark green eyes.
“Hello, I’m Doctor Cara Daniels, I’ll be administering your physical. Please follow me sir,” Cara informed him and then led the man to the nearest open examining station.
“Just have a seat on the biobed,” Cara instructed and then ran a medical scanner over the main places to scan and kept an eye on the results.
“How are we feeling today? Anything feel different from the last time you were examined,” Cara asked kindly as she pulled him his records.-Ensign Cara Daniels-Doctor
Horace nodded, and followed the doctor as instructed. It was an easy enough order to follow. Master Chief Petty Officer Horace Harkness had been through dozens of these physicals, and mostly he had been cleared every time. He had been cleared every time since he had gotten married, his wife was a stickler, and made certain he did as instructed even when she was in a different quadrant. When the doctor stopped at specific bed and told him to hop on it, once again he did as instructed. Well it was not much of a hop, it was a shift and slide climb kind of thing, with a bit of a groan, and a smile. His voice was deep hoarse and gravel edged, with the aged quality of a man that had done this a time or two prior, and often expected his words to be followed without questions.
“Well Doc, I feel like a middle aged man that works for a living” Horace stated with a simple smile, then continued on, “Nothing feels different today than it has for the last few years, just a lot miles on this old carcass.” he added with a shrug.
His files contained a laundry list of old fractures, breaks, bruises, cuts, stabs, phaser burns, Engineering mishaps, and the like. Other than the nose and the sunken knuckles it seemed most had proper medical care. The nose had been broken multiple times in fact, and the hands were listed multiple times for boxers fractures. It seemed in the past the Chief indulged himself in physical confrontation often.
