Stark remained silent. Truth be told he was reminiscing himself and struggling to remember anything from his early years before the killing began. That had never bothered him before Laraan came into his life but now it did. He pulled himself out of his reverie and focused on Orvos answer. They had known each other for a long time but as often happened in intelligence operations they didn’t really know each other at all, capabilities and skills, yes, character and history, no.

Orvos replied, “There are many times I wish I could go back, to visit old friends, to experience that which once was. Centuries have gone without my ability to visit here, let alone my homeworld. And holograms don’t do it justice.” For a moment, he sounded a bit negative about it all, but he quickly recovered. “But it is essential. To maintain the beauty of my homeworld, the El Aurian people created this program, to be continually updated. A record of our planet. We won’t be able to get every nuance, but we do have some of it.” It would be clear that this hologram only touched the surface of what the El Aurian people were able to record. Stories permeated their culture, although likely unbeknownst to the outside world as it were.

Orvos meandered his way to a local joint much like a pub of sorts. It was bustling with activity. He took a seat and gestured for the others to join him if they wished. “You’re welcome to join me for a quick drink,” he stated.

Ghubari grinned. “I’d love to. But tell me, do El Aurians have any interesting drinks? I figure if you do, you can share yours and another time I’ll introduce you to mbege, a drink brewed by another tribe where I’m from, but popular everywhere. I haven’t had even a sip of it sine a rather disastrous last encounter with it, so I was thinking I needed a better reason to indulge again.” Stark wasn’t there, but he had still inserted his presence at that rather disastrous visit to Tanzania. Even now, the thought of drinking the banana beer made her stomach turn, but it was all psychosomatic and she knew it.

Stark was grinning, “Don’t be mad but S’Raal might have given me a rather colourful rundown of your evening, particularly the part where you were mbegging to find a bathroom”. He shook his head ruefully, “I’ll never understand this proclivity in humans towards self-destructive imbibing of known poisons”.

“Well, in all fairness, it wasn’t by choice that night and it was the combination of the prescribe mbege and the iboga laced concoction my mother and our healer put together, plus the psychological trauma of reliving an excruciating memory that made me throw up, but hey, who’s counting details?” she teased Stark.

A mischievous smile appeared on Orvos’s features. “El Aurians have dabbled in the art of preparing proper poisons. What sort of beverage are you feeling?” he inquired. Yes, he would take her up on her offer, even if just to get to know the captain of the Athena better. And Stark was always a welcome companion for Orvos. A feeling crept into his mind. A feeling he had not felt in much time. Friends. He could honestly say that he felt a sense of friendship with these two. And all because he had wanted some privacy of his own in a program nobody ought to know about.

He should have figured keeping something like this from Stark would be near impossible.

Ghubari snorted. “I’m probably terribly clichéd as a Captain, but I like my hard alcohol. I can handle a cocktail, but there’s a point where you just want the harder stuff.” She gave him a slightly lopsided grin. “But I’m also open to anything new.”
