She sipped her drink and shook her head. “No, you haven’t. Or least not more than in passing. Tell me about him,” Ghubari encouraged, feeling the effects of the drinks relaxing her body and her mind. Yes, she’d need to be careful about how much she drank. On the other hand, her CMO might not give her other options. Either way, this evening was an interesting one.

Fl. Captain Koraia, CO

“Oh he was a right old Bastard, He once had an ‘accident’ with our counselor and she had to pull him into sickbay completely knocked out, when I woke him up he screamed bloody murder and punched me in the face” He spoke with fond nostalgia, clearly amused by the memory now “When I swore at him he ordered me into anger management lessons.” He chuckled “You know why he was unconscious” He turned with a wicked smile “Oo-Mox, not something I shared at the time that I knew” He took another sip “Another time he woke up hungover after a night of drinking in his office, threw up and killed his pet plant”

Ghubari rose her brows and broke out into laughter. “Oh, that sounded like fun times. I was fortunate to have great mentors along the way.”

Ben suddenly became more somber “I really thought he disliked me, so when he resigned his commission and took off and left his recommendation to promote his twenty-six-year-old junior Doctor to Chief it was a bit of a shock to everyone. Never got a chance to ask him why, on his way to wherever he was going his shuttle exploded” His laugh was sardonic “A toast to doctor Madman” He raised the glass.

Koraia lifted her glass. “To the weird and wonderful characters we meet along the way,” she said, clinking her glass briefly against his before knocking back what was left.

Gazing over their lush surroundings, she could say that she felt at ease in this moment for the first time since their last mission. It was only a moment, but it was a nice one.

“I became a department head after being the Assistant Chief for awhile. I was never overtly ambitious but when I was tapped to be Assistant I made sure to really pay attention to learn the role. But it was during the War and the Chief went down on the bridge during a battle. Boom! Guess who is the new Chief?” She glanced over at Ben. “Not the way I wanted to get the job, but I was determined to do right by him afterwards.”

Benjamin shrugged thoughtfully “I guess that was fairly common during the War. Happened to my Uncle James, I think he’s a wee older than you” He paused and smiled at the captain “But he didn’t get early admission. The main difference between you two is he declined every promotion whereas you rose through the ranks” He gave her a slight raise from his glass “Not everyone’s destined for the big seat”

She bowed her head in acknowledgement. “When I joined Starfleet, I never really thought about becoming a captain. Some would scoff at that in disbelief, thinking I’m lying, but really, I joined to find a place where I fit in. Starfleet was full of telepaths and empaths and I knew at least there I would be accepted as I was. And… my father was out there and I wanted to understand the thing that kept him and my mother apart. Of course, it was and always had been more complicated than that. But strangely enough, I feel like everything has come full circle.” Koraia smirked slightly at Ben. “Did you know my mother, who detested the idea of leaving Tanzania, let alone Earth, is living with him on his ship?”

He shook his head “I was only aware of you having a mother in a sense that you had been born” He said half jokingly. He only knew what her Starfleet file told him and even then he’d only focused on the parts relevant to his job. “If you don’t mind my asking, how did that come to be?” Ben gave her a curious expression “My own Clan is split practically in half in regards to spacetravel, most dislike the idea of going as far as Newcastle whilst others think the Galaxy isn’t big enough, I’,m curious as to why she changed her mind”
