The little Shih Tzu’s hips swung as he trotted down the level 12 corridor looking. His prize sat in his mouth. A medical tricorder lay between his teeth. Looking very much like a dog on a mission he moved at a good pace, just faster than an Ensign on his way to the labs who tried to grab him as he went past. A safe distance away he sat and faced them his tail wagging, but when they lunged for him again, he moved just out of their reach again before sitting down tricorder in mouth, tail still wagging.

Unsure what to do, the Ensign stared the dog down. Enj didn’t blink, he simply sat there his tail swishing from side to side on the floor behind him.

A beat passed, and then two. Then inspiration struck and the Ensign crouched on the floor and extended his arm out, “Here doggy doggy,” he attempted to coo, clicking his fingers at the dog.

Enj gave him a look that said really?. Then he stood up and turned his back on the Ensign, tricorder still in his mouth and took a few steps away, stopped and looked back over his shoulder at the baffled Ensign who stood back up wondering what he should do next.

Enj the dog

James Rowe was heading back to his quarters from a morning workout, the last couple of bites of peanut butter toast in hand. As he rounded the corner he saw an Ensign desperately losing a negotiation with a Shih Tzu… ‘mischievous little pups’ he thought to himself remembering the Tzu’s he’d met previously in his life. Seeing something in the dog’s mouth, James felt compelled to lend some assistance.

James approached the pup slowly making sure it could see him coming and then he squatted down, offering the last bite of toast as a bribe. “How about we trade?”

Rowe waited patiently, making sure not to make any sudden movements that might spook the little dog.

Food. The small dog’s greatest weakness.

The tricorder was immediately dropped and the small dog leaned forward gently taking the piece of toast off of Rowe and licked his fingers clean. Wasting no time, Enj ate the toast before the human could change his mind. Meanwhile in the background the Ensign gaped. “I’ve been chasing him all over this deck and all I needed was a piece of toast?”

James gave the Ensign a grin as the Tzu accepted the bribe and proceeded to lick his fingers clean. Securing the dropped tricorder before the dog could reclaim it, and then offering the pup some ‘lovies’, he said, “Every job gets easier when you have the proper tools.”

The Ensign’s jaw was dropped and for a second he just stared, then seeming to realise James was speaking to him he startled, “It was that easy?”

“Isn’t that right, buddy?” Rowe asked Enj in a playful voice. “It seems as if I made a new friend… I can see to it that both the pup and the prize make it back to their owner if you like. That way you have some plausible deniability that this little prince is really the one running the show.”

Enj wagged his tail and when he was satisfied there was no food left in Jame’s hand or on the ground he bounced just out of his and the Ensigns reach and sat there staring at James his tail brushing the floor.

“I think he’s the Chief Medical Officer’s dog,” The Ensign said still looking baffled, “I’ve seen him in Sickbay before. I don’t know what he’s doing here.”
