Dash strode purposefully down the corridors of the Athena, his baldric across his chest from his left shoulder to his right hip. He carried his bat’leth, but had left his bags in his quarters. He was the new CTO, and was here to serve ship and crew with honour and to the best of his ability. He was happy to leave intelligence behind, there were two many gray areas for him, at least in tactical you knew who the enemy was, and you were less likely to be stabbed in the back.

He reached the doors of sickbay 1 on Deck 12. The doors swished open in front of him, and he surveyed the room. Over 20 biobeds, 4 surgery and isolation booths, and medical staff and fellow crew providing service or being seen to. He waited for someone to be free to see him.

Dash continued to wait for a medical staff member to be free. He longed to be out on duty, but he remembered a lesson taught to him by his adopted father, Morak, about learning to be in the present, about being patient, rather than being endlessly on the run and busy. The scents and sounds of sickbay reached him, and he helped hold supplies for a medic as a storage cabinet was opened, he winked at a young boy who had entered sickbay with a female science lieutenant and couldn’t stop staring at Dash. The female officer looked at the boy, and then at Dash.

“Stop staring, Tal,” she said, then to Dashel, “apologies, Lieutenant.”

“Not a problem,” Dashel said, “I would be doing both of my families a disservice if I didn’t encourage curiousity amongst the young. I am Dashel Jamison, son of Morak, ship’s CTO. I’m pleased to meet you, Tal, and you, Lieutenant.”

Tal looked at Dash and waved, “Hi,” he said, returning to stare at the man, “my mum’s name is Gamina, by the way.”

Dash nodded, and smiled at her, “hi, Gamina.”

Gamina returned the smile, and said, “we’ve taken enough of Lieutenant Jamison’s time, Tal.”

Dash though Tal looked disappointed at that, but the boy looked at him, “bye Dashel, Sir, you’ll have to come to our quarters and have dinner with mum and me, she’s a great cook!”

Dashel washed as a slightly embarassed Gamina shepherded her son away, giving Dash a look of apology mixed with embarassment as she did so.

Dash found himself pondering them as he returned to waiting to be seen to.

“Lieutenant” Elaine looked up from her research and nearly jumped out of her skin at the sudden appearance of one of her nurses. The nurse, who had been about to shake Elaine out of her engrossed concentration of the work in front of her, jumped as well. “Sorry to bother you ma’am but one of the new officers is waiting for his on-board evaluation.”

“Please, just Elaine is fine,” Elaine smiled, “Or doctor,” she added when the nurse looked uncomfortable at the suggestion. “What’s this about a new patient, I’m sure I didn’t see him booked in my calendar,” her voice trailed off. While she was often late or forgetful off duty, she had never missed or forgotten a patient’s appointment before.”

“Yes, sorry Doctor,” the nurse stepped back and handed Elaine her PAAD. “This one is a bit of a special case. We thought it was best for you to manage him”

Elaine raised an eyebrow.

“He’s carrying a bat’leth,”

“Lieutenant Jamison,” she’d only been reading his medical notes a few hours before. She remembered Doctor Hawkins notation in the file. It wasn’t one that anybody would forget “Thank you for getting me, I’ll go and greet him now.”

As the nurse disappeared, Elaine grabbed the rest of her equipment that was always ready-to-go right next to her and followed her out. Taking a quick glance around sickbay, she noted her staff seemed to be more occupied that normal, and yet there were no more patients than there were on any other normal day on the Athena. Deciding it was probably from nerves from the stranger and his bat’leth. Elaine left them too and with her white doctor’s coat floating behind her, she went to find her patient (he wasn’t hard to spot).

“Lieutenant Jamison, I presume?” the question was rhetorical, “I’m Doctor Janvier, but please feel free to call me Elaine. I apologise for the wait” she smiled softly.

Dash smiled at Elaine, “Hello doctor … Elaine,” he replied, “and please, call me Dash,” his eyes went over to where Gamina … and Tal were being seen to, “no problem, Elaine, I spoke with a science lieutenant and her young son … it was an … interesting … encounter.” His eyes went to his bat’leth, “I think this may have encouraged the wait. It was a gift from my klingon parents when I joined the Academy, so I wouldn’t forget the upbringing. After an experience in the Academy where it was stolen in a prank by some classmates and used to enhance a statue of Captain Jonathan Archer, I always keep it with me. I never want to endure that Groundkeeper’s lecture again. It was burned into my brain. I’m here for my boarding physical, so I can get to work.”

“Dash” Elaine repeated, then smiled, “It’s not every day we have a stranger come in with a bat’leth every day, or well… anyone really. You should come by Sickbay more often. I’ve never seen my staff so,” she paused thinking of the right word to say, “energetic. I think scalpels have been cleaned at least three times now and poor Enj has been walked off his feet, uh my dog he’s a resident here.”

“Well, if you want to just take a seat over there,” Elaine guided Dash over towards one of the empty biobeds. “I think I was only a couple of years behind you are the Academy, my ex thought it was a great story.” she frowned, “I don’t think it was right of them to blame you when you were the victim of the prank.”

“Is there anything you want to disclose to me now before I start the physical?”

Lt. Elaine Janvier, Chief Medical Officer

As he walked, Dash seemed to force his weight onto the outside edge of his right boot. It made his right foot step slightly wider than his left and made him appear to be limping ever so slightly.

“When we were both 11 my brother and I found a secret entrance into an Andorian-run sweet shop on board deep space 47. One of us would keep a lookout and the other one would sneak in and take some. There were a pair of Bajoran sisters we kind of liked and we thought that if we gave them sweets that they’d like us. It didn’t work out that way, however. They were older than us, and we overheard them saying that they thought we were cute. Their father was also the station commander, and well, we ended up …” Dash paused, “oh not that kind of disclosure, I’m guessing.” He grinned.

“Not quite,” Elaine laughed.

“Nothing to report, Doctor. Fit as a fiddle. Just a slight twinge in the right ankle from a standard bat’leth rotation this morning, but it’s already clearing up.” As he said ‘slight twinge’, he subtly shifted his weight to his left leg to relieve the throbbing he felt in his right ankle. He slowly, gingerly made his way to the biobed.

Now when he got to the biobed, he looked at it as though it was an opponent. He looked from it to his bat’leth, and with a sigh, put the weapon down next to the biobed. Returning his gaze to the biobed, and where most patients would hop up using their legs, Dash hauled himself up using his upper body strength, aggressively pushing himself up onto the bed.

“Promise me, it won’t be used to decorate statues of past captains on board, Elaine?” he quipped.

Elaine watched his gait but said nothing. She’d be dealing with it soon enough.

“No promises,” she winked, “Besides I’m not an overly hormonal teenage boy trying to make an impression. If you want someone to guard it, I know a guy,” A passing nurse snicked knowing exactly what Elaine had meant when she said that she ‘knew a guy’.

“I think I will start with your ankle twinge. Even if it’s already beginning to be clearing up,” Which she highly didn’t believe, “you may as well take advantage of having a doctor in front of you,”

Lt. Elaine Janvier, CMO

“Really, Elaine,” Dash protested, “there’s no need, its just a twinge, and I’m sure there’s more important things for you to deal with …” he looked around hopefully, but he ended up sighing in resignation as he reached down to tug the boot off.

The throbbing in his ankle flared into a sharp, white-hot burn the moment his fingers pulled at the stiff leather of his Starfleet boot. Dash bit the inside of his cheek to swallow a groan, cursing the design of standard-issue uniforms. He managed to get the boot loose, but the mere action of sliding his foot out sent a wave of nausea rolling through his stomach.

Once the boot was off, the reality of his ‘twinge’ was fully visible. His uniform sock was already stretched tight against the skin of his ankle, the fabric visibly pulsing with his hearbeat. He gingerly set the boot on the floor, trying to breath normally through his nose so Doctor Janvier wouldn’t catch him panting from the pain.

Dash leaned back against the biobed’s headrest, resting his hands in his lap. He forced a relaxed, casual shrug, though his fingers tightly gripped the fabric of his trousers to keep from touching the injured joint.

“See, Elaine! What did I tell you? A minor twinge. Its barely even discoloured,” Dash lied smoothly, staring directly at the ceiling to avoid looking down at what he knew was rapidly becoming a bruised, swollen mess. “A quick blast with a dermal regenerator and it’ll be good as gold! I’ll be out of your hair, Doctor and you’ll be able to tend to someone who is actually injured or sick. I’ve got a shield-grid calibration at fourteen-hundred hours that won’t run itself … and NE Bigguy and I are due for a round of sparring at fifteen hundred.”
