Azriah heard someone enter the brig. She turned to see one of the officers of the Athena who had been at the explosion walk over to the orion officer. Her eyes settled on the pair, her ears now trying to hear what she could. She could only hear faint vocalizations and nothing more. Too far and soft for her to pick up. But it seemed important. Was it about her? Did they receive orders pertaining to her? Was someone trying to get her released? She couldn’t tell.

-Azriah

Hammor glanced down at the chip and simply nodded. He took it and walked to the far side of the room and stood in front of the comms terminal. He looked back over his shoulder at Cavassan and said “Everyone but myself and the Counselor post outside, please. No one in until I open the door. I will take full responsibility for the brig for the moment.”

He waited for the room to clear before inserting the chip in the reader. Before playing it, he activated the privacy screen on the cell Azriah was in and the field turned an opaque white and blocked all sound from entering the cell. He then opened the data on the chip, but only after making sure the terminal was secure and nothing could be sent from the chip into the system.

Hammor, CE

In a moment completely unlike Faye there was no additional encryption, nothing that would get in the way of him opening the message easily. That and possibly she was just in that much of a hurry.

It was an audio message, no visual.

Hey Gem. There wasn’t time to tell you about this in person, and to be honest I don’t know if I’d be strong enough to do so. But I couldn’t go ahead without telling you about this myself. It’s only fair.

While you and the away team were down there I continued my investigation. Long story short, there is an Intelligence operative who was on one of the attacked vessels whose crew went missing. We have every reason to believe he’s somewhere on that structure. While there’s no external evidence his mission was compromised- and Intell has heard zilch from him- we all know these people would not take kindly to interlopers.

The Athena was assigned this mission in part because of me and my background. I discovered this when I dug into his file. I also had someone from Intell (probably an agent monitoring his case) confirm that this is all bigger than we originally thought. They want him back and if they are asking (and not ordering) me to retrieve him, they a) don’t deem him expendable, and b) know me well enough to know I’d not leave a man hanging. I not only have to go see if he can be rescued, but we have Ducante to rescue as well. I could not live with myself if I sat back and let others less skilled attempt this. I know this and you know this. That doesn’t mean I’m doing this blindly or that I’m not struggling with the idea. But it is one of those times where the reward is worth the terrible risk.

I love you. I know I don’t have to tell you that, but I’m saying it anyway. I love you Daggum Hammor, body and soul.” An audible hitch could be heard in her voice. “The Captain has promised me that no matter what he won’t leave me there and in a moment of growth, I trust in that. I’ll be home as soon as I can. For now, help me by helping figure out what the hell these people have gotten into. All my digging leads me to them involved in some sort of trafficking of people. But with whom? Why?

See you soon.

The message ended

~Faye Calloway, CIO

Janna had listened but her focus had been on Daggum the entire time. She gazed up at him, feeling a bit of overwhelm of her own on behalf of her friends. “I asked her on the bridge if she was sure. She said she didn’t want to, but she had to. She wouldn’t leave anyone there to go through what she had any long than they had to. It was pretty hard to disagree with that. She knows what she going into and is determined and in my experience, a determined Faye Calloway is a force to be reckoned with.”

She reached out a hand and placed it on his arm. “But I will say this about your wife, Daggum: she has more courage and gumption in her big toe than most people conjure over their entire life. I I like their odds.”

~Janna Kingston, CNS

Bump

Bump

Janna patted his arm and gave him a moment to digest Faye’s message before she moved away and back over to the prisoner. She should probably change but there was a part of her wanted Azriah to be reminded that her actions had had real consequences.

She folded her arms over her chest and gazed at the woman in the brig cell. “You had to know that endangering our lives would only bring more attention to this place. Why bother with the explostion at all?”

~Janna Kingston, CNS

Azriah sat in her cell by this point and she simply eyed Janna. She took in the sight of her disheveled state. Yeah, lives were endangered. They didn’t understand the half of it though. She kept quiet though. She was resolute. And she knew better than to say anything to these people, especially when lives hung in the balance.

-Azriah

Janna held Azriah’s gaze intently, never veering. She could all but feel the threads beneath the surface. Was there fear? Yes, she thought so, but it was masked under indifference. “Looking around down there, it was clear you’ve all had a rough go of it. And I get you have had a bad history with someone from Starfleet, but if you’re in trouble, we can’t help unless we know what’s going on.”

~Janna Kingston, CNS

Azriah, for the briefest of moments, wanted to trust this woman’s words. But she knew better. Starfleet couldn’t be trusted. “You certainly know something is going on. Why does that mean I’m in trouble?” she replied in defiance.

Rado came in to the brig, whistling and carrying a tray of drinks. “Okay, so I’ve got my kava juice. Who, uh, asked for the glass of…Earth Water?” He asked aloud. He then noticed the lady in the brig. “Oh, I’m sorry. Did you want something?”

Lieutenant Junior Grade Rado Gainn
Security Lieutenant

Kingston’s gaze shifted to Rado for a moment and then back to Azriah to see how the woman reacted to the new presence and his offer.

~Janna Kingston, CNS

Azriah sneered. “The earth water. That’s what I want.” She eyed the security officer, curious how he might respond to her.

-Azriah

Rado smiled and said, “Alright. That makes you braver than me. Earth water tends to hurt my tummy.”

After around for permission, Rado inserted the glass of water into the food and drink slot. “I can replicate some ice, too, if that’s what you want.”

BUMP!

Lieutenant Junior Grade Rado Gainn
Security Lieutenant

OOC: Tony and I agreed that I should take over Azriah. Moving this forward now.
IC:
“Ice…” Azriah shook her head. “I don’t need ice. If that’s what is standard around here, no wonder you Starfleet folks are so soft.”

~Mischief Maker

Kingston continued to study the woman. The security officer’s arrival made things more interesting as there was another variable present that hadn’t been on the away team, that Azriah didn’t loosely know. But more than that, Janna was trying to follow the threads her mind was picking up. She almost said something but then hled back, waiting to see what Rainn would do and how Aziah would react.

~Janna Kingston, CNS

Rado Gainn was silent for a few moments before replying, “Says the woman in a brig about the people who put her there.”

He leaned towards the counselor and asked, “What exactly happened here? Why is she in the brig?”

Lieutenant Junior Grade Rado Gainn
Security Lieutenant

Janna’s grass green eyes took in Azriah for another moment before she switched her focus to Rado. “Well, the group of us on the original away team were all nearly killed in an explosion she led us right * into the middle of. If it hadn’t been for Commander Hammor”-she jabbed a thumb in the direction of the Orion CE that was at the controls-“I and maybe even her would be dead. Commander Stone is critically injured. The rest of us faired okay. If a little singed and smelling of smoke. We also know that everything at this installation is not what it seems. Isn’t that right, Azriah?” she said in a lilting voice. “See, we know that you’re not just trying to survive. And if it is true what you’ve gotten yourselves into, well, the main question I have is why*?” Her eyes narrowed and those final words had shifted to a darker tone.

~Janna Kingston, CNS

Azriah said nothing, but she shifted ever so slightly on the bench.

Rado looked at Azriah. She seemed unlikely to cooperate without some motivation. “I would, uh, answer her questions if I were you. Answering might get you a prison cell with its own food replicator and, uh, a sonic shower.”

Security Lieutenant

Aziah burst into laughter, but said nothing further.

OOC: thank you for the bump! I knew I was forgetting something.
IC:
The doors to brig opened and in stepped an Ensign with Intelligence division colours. She was Vulcan appearing but had the black eyes of a Betazoid. She surveyed the scene and stepped up next to Rado and Janna. “Has she said anything? Perhaps confirmed what we already know?”

The ensign might have been familiar to Daggum as Sinara, one of Faye’s junior officers she had trained personally. She glanced at Hammor. “She is back. The other team returned shortly after us.*”

~Mischief Maker

“Nothing besides the fact that her stomach can endure Earth water,” Rado responded to the newly arrived ensign, rubbing his bearded chin, “Also, since she cannot be persuaded by generous prison accommodations, I might have to recall more of my interrogation training.”

Rado knew it would be generous to call a two-week unit in his Enemy Engagement class in the Academy as interrogation training, but hopefully nobody will point that out.

Sinara lifted her brows. “We’ll see if that is necessary, but I am here to help as needed.” The Intelligence officer flashed him a confidant smile.

Just then, a communique sounded through Janna’s combadge.

=/\=Bridge to Kingston, a word if you will?=/\= His message was meant to indicate to her that he needed her out of earshot from any bystanders. They knew each other well. if she hadn’t picked it up in his words and voice, perhaps his reaching out would. If it even worked.

Janna stepped away from the brig cell and moved back over to Hammor where she could speak quietly. “Kingston here,” she said softly.

Once it was clear he could speak privately to her, he relayed the new information to her. =/\=I’ve gotten word from Commander Callahan that they rescued an orion who was being held prisoner. Apparently there are others being held in order to be sold into slavery. I have no idea if you or Hammor had any luck in getting more information, but this may help.=/\=

-Captain Orvos Legen, CO

Janna drew in a deep breath. “No, we haven’t so far, but yes, I think this might help. Kingston out.”

She moved back over to the brig and gazed at Azriah, but gone was any empathy and when she spoke there were threads of actual disgust in her voice. “Oh wow, and here I thought this was all about survival. Turns it might be, but you’ve gone and done something truly despicable. Your Orion prisoner is talking, Azriah. How many others are there? Who’s your buyer?”

~Janna Kingston, CNS

Azriah’s mouth very briefly slipped into a small O before she clamped down on her expression, but she was radiating panic and the empathic persons in the room would know it. “I don’t know what you’re talking about. We have Orions living with us. None of them are prisoners.”

Sinara scoffed. “Such lies! Oh how fun! I always love this part.” She glanced at Rado and Kingston briefly before focusing on their prisoner. “I would answer her question. See, I was there when Togge and our Chief of Security found their way to us. So I also heard what he had to say, and con confirm that whatever Dr. Kingston is alluding to is true, and anything you say to counter it is a lie. I also know that the penalty for all your crimes is going to be quite hefty. Probably a life-time sentence. Not sure they like to parole slave traders, so… ” Sinara shrugged.

Azriah stood and clenched her fists. “You have one person’s word against all of ours. You have no proof that anything you say is true.”

~Mischief Maker

“Well, I think it goes without saying that you haven’t proven yourself trustworthy.” Rado said, digusted that he gave someone who was morally on par with the Cardassians a drink of Earth water. “It’s in your best interest to cooperate and answer our questions.”
