Elaine stopped where she was walking and gazed out of one of the windows on the USS Athena at the stars that surrounded the ship. It was nice to be in space again she thought to herself, after being on Earth for so long nursing her Grandmother she hadn’t realised how much she had missed it. Now that she was up amongst the stars again, she wanted to stop and take a minute for herself.

She stayed there for a few minutes until a whine and a nudge at her legs brought her back from her thoughts. She looked down at the small dog beside her. “Thank you Enj,” she spoke softly to the little Shih Tzu, giving him a gentle ruffle “I shouldn’t be day-dreaming when we’ve got places to be and people to meet,”

She glanced down at her schedule, first the Counselor, then she’d go and do a quick check-in at Sickbay before checking in with the Captain. For that particular meeting she’d leave Enj in their new quarters then collect him again when she returned back to Sickbay to set up her office and meet her staff properly. It would be a busy day but she wanted to get back into working again as soon as she could.

A few minutes later she reached the Counselors office and rung the chime. Before stepping out of the doorway to wait.

OOC: The Mythology class has an entire counselling suite and there are six offices inside with a reception area. We’ll make this work with a little wave of a magic wand.
IC:
Stepping inside the Counseling Suite Janvier found herself inside a large half moon space. In the centre was a curved desk where a blond Risian sat behind a computer terminal. Behind her along the curve of the room were six doors, each with a different colour. The wall with the door to the corridor had a few chairs for people to wait if needed. Beside the Risian was a petite Human woman with chin length blond curls and grass green eyes.

She blew out a breath and looked up at the sound of the door. Then she smiled. “Ahh, I was hoping you’d be by soon. Elaine, yes?”

OOC: I must have looked at the wrong specs, oops.

IC: Elaine gave the Risan a nod in greeting and then focused on the blonde human in front of her, “Elaine, yes.” she said softly, “and this is Enj” she gestured to the small fluffy dog that had trailed quietly in behind her and was now happily sniffing around one of the seats his tail wagging behind him.

“I hope you don’t mind I brought him with me, he’s very well behaved but I was worried he’d get nervous being in a new place if I left him by himself. We’ve been together for so long now that he feels like an extension of myself sometimes.” She explained, “Of course I can take him back, it wouldn’t take long”

“Not at all.” The woman stepped around the desk to greet the pair, and crouched, putting her hand out so the dog could sniff her if he liked. She looked up at Elaine. “I’m Janna Kingston, head of the department.”

Enj gave Jana’s hand a brief sniff and then rubbed his head against her palm. Not looking for a scratch but more like he was saying he accepted Janna.

“I was thinking, if you’re up for it, we could have our chat elsewhere? I need to get out of my office.”

“True, that,” the Risian quipped with a snort.

Janna looked over her shoulder back at Cherry. “Hush you.” She returned her gaze to Enj. “And I know just the place where you can come with us.” She flicked her gaze upwards. “Unless you want to stay here. We totally can, if you do.”

Elaine stifled an amused smile behind her sleeve. It reminded her from when she had been CMO on the Dauntless, she had had a nurse there who had frequently told her she needed to get out of her office more as well.

“Of course,” she replied, moving out of the way so Jana could exit, “Just lead the way and we’ll follow.

Janna gave a quick nod and stepped out of the reception area and into the corridor, heading for the turbolift. “How was your journey here?” she asked as she called the lift. They only had to go down three decks to Deck 14, so their destination wouldn’t take long to reach.

Enj trotted alongside Elaines ankles, panting happily as the trio walked through the corridor. “It was long. There are only so many published space medicine articles I can read before my fingers are tingling to hold be holding a scalpel again. I’ll be happy to get back into Sickbay and into a routine again. I think Enj will be feeling the same, it wasn’t a large ship we were on, the new sights and smell will have him snoring away happily tonight”

Janna laughed. “Oh, I can imagine. And this ship has a lot to explore. I’m sure Enj will enjoy the process.”

The lift carried them them down and Janna guided them to a set of doors the entered Arboretum 1.

Inside was a large green space with paths and benches. There were trees, shrubs, and flowering plants from all over the Federation. “Welcome to our largest of the three arboreta. We are fortunate to have a lot of recreational space on the ship. A former captain of ours once called the ship a glorified cruise ship, but she always said with a with a smirk. She loved the ship, even though she was a former tactical officer and the previous iteration of the Athena was a tactical destroyer.” Janna flashed Elaine a grin. “I don’t know about you, but I much prefer this over a battleship.”

Enj immediately took off as soon as they were inside running straight up to one of the trees and eagerly sniffing around the base, before contributing to it’s hydration and moving on to the next.

Elaine hardly noticed her eyes going wide as she looked around the arboreta, “It’s beautiful,” she said, almost breathless with the beauty of it all. From growing up in the city to living and working on Starships she rarely saw anything quite on the same scale unless she was on the holodeck, but these plants were real, and from so many different parts of the universe all together to create the beauty she saw around her. She couldn’t even remember if her last posting had had an arboreta. If there had been one she knew she probably hadn’t visited, too busy working as she always tended to be.

“I can say I don’t blame you,” Elaine said walking over to one of the flowers and gently stroking its petal with her hand, feeling it’s velvety texture beneath her fingers. “You could hardly think of war or battle in here. Do you come here often?”

“I try to.” Janna said with a nod, her curls bobbing. “There are two other green spaces on the ship, but this is closest to my office and quarters. I like to stroll through here when I need a short break. There’s copious studies on the positive benefits of even a few minutes everyday amongst growing things. Though to be honest, it’s bene so busy lately that I haven’t had as much of an opportunity. But I like to take my sessions out of the office when I can and where it makes sense to.” She turned her gaze on Elaine. “So, thank you for helping me multi-task,” she said with a grin.

“I feel like it should be me thanking you,” Elaine laughed. She looked up at one of the trees, marvelling at the red flowers on it with petals so small and fine they looked like needles. “It’s so beautiful in here, I’m not surprised you’d want to go here when you need a break.”

As they meandered down one path, Janna was thoughtful. She turned her gaze on the younger woman, feeling her awe wash over her. “Is this a place you think you’d spend a lot of time?”

Sensing the Counsellor was looking at her Elaine turned her focus away from all the flora around them. “I think it’s a place I’d love to spend a lot of time,” she said. Then, noticing Enj popped out of a bush just in front of them before trotting ahead of them for a short period before he was back among the foliage exploring all the exciting smells she added, “I think Enj would love it too,”

“I probably could make Enj’s walks be through here. I don’t think it’s that far from my office, which would be convenient” she mused, “Then I could be sure I would visit often. Perhaps even be able to sit down and read some medical journals from time to time when I’m not in Sickbay.”

“Novel, right?” Janna said with a grin. “I should probably take my own advice and bring my own reading here. Maybe I’d actually get to it,” she added with a laugh.

“They say the worst patients are doctors, maybe it’s the same for counsellors,” Elaine laughed.

They wandered along one path that wound around the outside of the space. “So how are you feeling about being on the Athena?

“Excited,” Elaine smiled, “I took leave so I could go to Earth and take care of my Grandmother after she had her stroke. That way my cousin wouldn’t have to.” she laughed a little, “May, bless her heart, is wonderful at many things but a nursemaid isn’t her strength and she’s always busy. It would have been too much for her to be working to pay the bills and looking after Grandma, and I’m a doctor so it made sense.”

“But I’ll be glad to be working and looking after more than one patient, there were only so many times I could read Dr T’Pok’s analysis of the response of cell leukocytosis to 0 gravity therapy, or one of Dr Kate Ashurst’s paper series on the benefits of eating Tom’aa’l fruit in young humanoids. I love reading medical papers, but I really just want to be back in action again. I guess I’ve got a touch of medical cabin fever so to speak,”
