With Counselling over and out of the way, Elaine and Enj made the trek towards Sickbay. The little dog sticking close to her heels. All the new and different smells were making him stick a little closer to her than usual. She flicked him a fond look, he was a good boy. Her angel, she sometimes thought to herself, always there when she needed him. He had been a popular figure when they had served on the Dresden and without her meaning for it to happen, he had somehow integrated to medical team and become a valuable member of it.

She hoped that he would fit in with her team here. She had gotten used to always having him around, he was good company and had never failed to cheer up her patients or sometimes even the staff when they needed to be cheered up. This would be his first test. She’d be able to get her first inkling of an idea from this medical check in for as to how accepting her staff would be or not.

Spying the intake nurse, Elaine walked straight over, “Lieutenant Elaine Janvier, and Enj, we have our preliminary medical check in,” she said quietly.

“Yes, yes, of course Lieutenant Janverry, ” The nurse said waddling out and leading the pair over to a bio bed, “Welcome aboard, I’ll just go and let Dr Ren know you are here.”

“Thank you,” Elaine smiled, “And please, it’s Lieutenant Janvier, or you can call me Elaine if you prefer,”

Talia was charting when the nurse notified her there was a patient to be seen. “She has the cutest little dog with her!! I wanted to hold it, but what was the name of the chief we are expecting in? Was it Janverry? If so, that’s her and I didn’t want to make a bad impression.”

Her curiosity piqued, Ren got up and walked out into the bay to see what the nurse was talking about. Sure enough, there was a woman out there with a tiny animal at her feet. “Hello! I’m Talia Ren and I’ll be conducting your intake physical today.” Her eyes dropped down to the small critter. “And who do we have here?” Without asking permission, she bent and scooped up the puppy, ooing and ahing about how darling he was.

Enj looked up at her with his big brown eyes and wagged his tail happily. He looked back at Elaine and then put his paw over Talia’s arm as if claiming her.

“This is Enj” Elaine smiled softly, it never failed to make her smile to see how people reacted to Enj like Talia had. Enj had clearly taken a liking to her as well. “I think he likes you,” and he did look very comfortable and pleased with himself scooped up in Ren’s arms.

“We’re here for our physical check in, I’m Elaine Janvier, feel free to just call me Elaine” she introduced once Ren had finished fawning over the wee dog. “It’s a pleasure to meet you. Enj is a good judge of character so I’m glad we’re in good hands.”

Talis was petting Eng as he lay in her arms. “Oh, sometimes you forget just how special pets are. It’s like holding a baby—somehow just its presence makes you feel better about everything.” Needing to get a couple of scans on Janvier, Ren moved to a nearby bio bed and set the puppy down. “Can you be a good boy and stay? I can scan you at the same time as your mom.” With a nod of her head, she called the nurse over to watch Eng and keep him from the edge of the bed while the scans ran.

Almost as if he understood, Enj lay down on the bio bed and lay his head on his front paws looking up at Talis and the nurse with his big eyes. Elaine gave the dog a tender smile then focused her attention back on Talis. “I’m pretty sure that is why my cousin gave him to me,” she said.

“Alright, Lt, lay back and this will only take a minute. Any new symptoms or concerns? Have you visited any world or living condition within the past 90 days that has predetermined health warnings?”

OOC: Does she find anything for Janvier or the dog?

“No, nothing. We’ve just come back from Earth and feeling pretty healthy. I wouldn’t expect you to find anything,” Elaine said before lying back as she had been instructed.

Ren would find in her scans that her scans that Enj was completely healthy, maybe a little too so as his weight was creeping towards overweight compared to his last physical. Elaine’s scan was also coming back with a slightly higher white blood cell count compared to her previous scan, nothing that would set off any red flags but possibly something to take note of.

Talia was still smiling as she approached Eng again. “What a good boy you are!” She stroked his fur as she picked him up to return him to Janvier. “Nothing wrong with Eng except he’s put on a little weight. You might want to cut back on his food or increase his exercise, but nothing is critical. It could all sort itself out on its own. It might have something to do with the transfer and being unsettled right now.” Hazel eyes looked at the results for the Lt. “As far as your scans go, I’m seeing an uptake in your white blood cell count but no active infections. We’ll want to keep an eye on that over the next week to see if it settles or increases. Depending on what we find, we can go from there.”

“Now that you mention it he does feel heavier than usual, It might just be the travel out here. There wasn’t much space to walk him” Elaine commented, “Or have you been scamming food when I haven’t been looking?” She asked Enj who looked up at her and thumped his tail into her side.

She turned her attention back to Ren, “Not even I can resist those puppy dog eyes sometimes,”

Ren slipped the medical tricorder onto her belt and folded her arms, leaning against the nearest surface with a hip. “So now that you’ve been released for duty, are you our new CMO?”

“Yes I am,” Elaine smiled, she lifted Enj up and out a little, “and this is my supervisor,” Enj wiggled so she gently placed him on the floor.

“Since we’ve already broken the ice, I’d love an introductory tour when you have some time if your schedule is not too busy.”

Talia had a special place in her heart for CMO’s. She admired them greatly and knew they could all be a wonderful source of learning opportunity if they were so inclined. She raised one corner of her mouth in a grin. “Well, let me be the first one to welcome you to the Athena. We’ve been doing fine the last few days without a Chief, but I’m sure we are all happy to see you arrive. If there’s anything I can help you with, just let me know. I’m eager to learn whatever you want to teach.” Talia had a good feeling about the woman in front of her. “Now, for that tour—c’mon, let’s get started.”

“Thank you,” Elaine looks around, quietly watching the staff working away at their individual jobs, “It looks like Sickbay is doing fine. If I wasn’t the new CMO I wouldn’t even know they were missing a CMO. For now, though, I think the teaching will come from you for these first few shifts.” She chuckled softly, “And then we shall see, the best lessons come from the things that space throw at us,” Her smile slipped a little as she remembered Ensign Charlie Bailey, who had been a collapsed while on helping Eliane treat officers as the ship was attacked. She’d seen that the Charlie had been injured too but she had trusted when she had said she was fine to keep going, she had seen without seeing at all.

She’d been a good friend to Elaine, and she’d learnt many harsh lessons from that experience.

She looked at Talia out the corner of her eye as the woman showed her around. There was something about the Junior Lieutenant that made Elaine look forward to working with her and a little hope that they could become friends. Enj certainly liked her, and Elaine realised she did too. Ren was a good doctor, and not afraid to treat her own Superior, even taking notice of the small details like a minute change in Elaine’s blood cell count.

“What are the other officers like, any that need extra attention,” Elaine chucked softly, “Or avoiding?”

Talia was waking Janvier through the department. They were headed toward the labs behind active sickbay. “Honestly, you’ll probably be dealing with me the most. I’m assigned to alpha shift which is what I’m assuming you will work most often. I know we all cycle through other shifts on the regular, but for right now, everyone is pretty happy with the shift they’re on.” They were now in the actual labs and Talia took the Chief around and showed her the different studies that were going on, naming the officer in charge of each and how far the studies had gone.

After the laboratories, the women headed for the medical supply area. As they went, Talia introduced Janvier to any and all medical personnel they passed. “This really is one of the nicest sickbays I’ve served in. And here we are…” She showed the Chief how stock was set up in the cupboards and shelves, inviting her to make any changes she felt necessary.
