LTJG James Rowe paused just inside the entrance to the Athena’s sickbay, giving his eyes a moment to adjust to the sterile brightness of the medical ward. Starfleet ships tended to design their medical spaces the same way: clean lines, controlled lighting, quiet efficiency. It was the kind of environment built to reassure people that problems could be solved here, and to provide a sense of familiarity regardless of which medical suite you ultimately found yourself in.He took a few measured steps inside as his eyes surveyed the room, old habits and such, the faint hum of diagnostic equipment and biobeds filling the space between conversations among the medical staff. A glance around confirmed what he expected. A few crew members were already being seen, others waiting their turn for the same set of mandatory intake procedures that came with any new assignment.
Rowe shifted his weight slightly as he walked, more out of habit than discomfort. Long travel and too little rest had a way of reminding him of his body’s limitations, even if he preferred not to acknowledge them in public. Most people never noticed the subtle adjustment in his stride unless they were specifically looking for it.
He checked in at the intake station and gave his name and assignment with the same quiet efficiency he applied to most formalities.
“Rowe, James. Boarding physical.”
The statement carried no urgency. Just another step in the process of joining a new ship.
While waiting to be called forward, he took in the layout of the Athena’s Sickbay. Every medical department developed its own rhythm over time. Equipment placement, staff movement, how quickly patients were moved from intake to scanning. These things told him more about the department than any official briefing ever would.
For the moment, though, he simply waited. Hands loosely folded behind his back, posture relaxed but attentive, watching the quiet choreography of medical work unfold around him.
