Rowe slowed as he approached the science offices, taking a moment to orient himself before stepping fully into the department. The Athena’s science section was already active despite the early hour. Consoles glowed with scrolling data, a few officers moving between stations with the focused energy that usually meant someone had already found a problem worth solving, and there was always a problem worth solving.

He lingered just long enough to take in the layout. Workstations grouped by specialty. Instrument panels arranged for quick access rather than aesthetics. It had the look of a department that valued efficiency over presentation, which suited him well enough.

Rowe adjusted the cuff of his uniform absently and made his way toward the office marked for the Chief Science Officer. The subtle hum of lab equipment followed him through the corridor, blending with the quiet rhythm of the department at work.

Stopping outside the door, he straightened slightly and glanced once at the display panel beside the entrance to confirm the office.

No reason to overthink it, his paperwork was all in order.

He lifted a hand and pressed the door chime.
