They were finally a go to bring the new system online. After weeks of wrestling with getting the local UHPAVS system to play nicely with her custom coded and designed system, Faye confirmed first thing this morning that they would be good to go today.

Later in the afternoon, just aft 1400 hours, Faye’s voice came through. =/\=Calloway to Engineering. Phase One ready to go. Going to connect us to the bridge and we’ll adjust everything as we go. Hope you ready to be done rewiring and recoding, because I certainly am,=/\= she said with a laugh.

The crew had gotten accustomed to seeing Dawson in civilian garb. He wasn’t overly casual. But he also didn’t don the classic starfleet uniform. He was, after all, retired…according to his file. Just a liason here. Extra pair of hands. Extra set of eyes. El Aurian wisdom. You know, the package deal.

Few paid him any attention outside of the occasional glance. He strolled in with confidence. He was a part of Faye’s team. And he felt he might be of use in Engineering. Did he have any real reason for the feeling? Probably not. But he had learned to trust his gut, even if things didn’t pan the way he expected.

He stood still and watched the busy work in Engineering, paying particular attention to wherever he might find the Chief Engineer.

-Dawson, Intel

He wasn’t hard to find. The mountainous Orion was standing at the central command console going over details in a meticulous fashion. =/\= Engineering here. We have a few final diagnostics to run here; and before you connect to the bridge, do one final check on the phase relay inhibitors from your end. =/\=

Hammor, CE

=/\=On it.=/\= Faye’s fingers flew over her console and she quickly ran the query. She didn’t bother filling the channel with banter, instead focusing intently on her work. At least the CE was one of those people who intimately understood how her brain worked and knew how to roll with things. It’s what made them such a great team.

=/\=The earlier adjustments are more than adequately compensating for the increased load. Relays are good.=/\=

~Faye Calloway, CIO

=/\= Then get on it, slick. I know you are wound tighter than a Ferengi in a clothes store waiting for this to come online. =/\= the CE said with an audible smile.

From Dawson’s perspective, the couple seemed to carry themselves quite well. Professional boundaries strictly adhered to where others might slip in that area. He had been working Faye for the most part. After all, he fell into her department.

Engineering had always been Orvos’s forte, so he had generally let the engineers do as they needed to, back on the Aurora, without much of his oversight. Not that engineering needed oversight. But, his mind of security never stopped calculating potential hazards. He kept his mind and senses open as he approached the hulking chief engineer. Seeing how he worked on this end was giving him the full perspective on their dynamic.

He put his hands behind his back as he approached from Hammor’s peripheral. “Sure hope all this hard work has paid off,” he said casually. Being able to speak freely was comfortable for him. Not having the weight of the uniform gave him the freedom to speak…mostly…as he saw fit.

-Dawson

Hammor gave a slight grin without taking his eyes off the the console. “Well… we have the best odds in our favor with Calloway running the show. And even if it doesn’t work, at least we’ll learn something from that… now won’t we?”

Hammor, CE

Faye actually laughed. =/\=Well, if this whole thing doesn’t help, I’m sure you’ll figure out how later.=/\=

Faye tied in her channel with Dag to the open one with Legen on the bridge. =/\=Engineering, Bridge, we’re all on together and set to go. Initiating Phase 1. Don’t expect much on your end, not even blinky lights.=/\=

Her fingers flew for several seconds. All that others would hear over the comm was the almost pulsing chirps from the computer console as she initialized the system.

For Calloway and her intense focus, the time felt like nothing, though it might have felt like it was stretching out for everyone else.

Finally, she spoke again. =/\=Phase One complete. All systems stable. Engineering, moving to Phase Two as planned. Watch the output on the Tertiary Computer Core redundancies. We’ve corrected that odd flux the simulations brought up, but I don’t want to count on that.=/\=

Dawson raised an eyebrow at Faye’s odd reply. Perhaps he had not heard something spoken by the chief? Whatever it was, he shook the thought from his mind as he focused.

Dawson spoke quieter so his voice wouldn’t transmit over the comms, but loud enough for Hammor to hear him to his right. “If for some reason it doesn’t, yes, we will have learned something else.”

He happened to see a certain female ensign walk by towards a station to monitor something. Her eyes kept glancing at the hulking chief every half a second, which made Dawson wonder whether she was monitoring the computer core or Hammor’s…biceps. When she caught Dawson staring right at her quizzically, he raised a hand waving a delicate hello and a grin before turning back to the chief with the same grin plastered to his face. “Curious…” he added quietly. “How do you keep your department from getting too distracted?” he said to the chief, not caring whether anyone else heard the teasing question.

“Gotta trust ‘em not to.” Hammor said without looking away from the computer. “We have enough going on that minds should have enough happening that focus shouldn’t be an issue. If it is… well… it will either self-correct or not. I try not to be a babysitter too much.” and he chuckled.

Hammor, CE

Dawson chuckled. “Sounds like you and I will get along quite well. I’m not keen on babysitting. People can manage or rather they ought to.” He listened carefully as they entered the next phase. He continued observing, watching people as they worked and looking over readouts. He was ready to assist if needed, but his primary responsibility was to be an extra set of eyes, making sure things went down without a hitch.
