The doors to the main science lab parted with a quiet hiss, and Tyler stepped inside. The hum of consoles and the low murmur of voices filled the air, several officers already bent over their stations.

He adjusted the strap of the data satchel over his shoulder, letting his gaze drift around the room. Rows of sleek equipment gleamed under the lights, and the faint scent of sterilized metal clung to the air.

Instead of announcing himself immediately, he wandered a few steps in, running a hand thoughtfully along the edge of a workstation. His eyes swept across the lab, not in a hurry, but watchful — taking in who was present, looking for anyone who carried the kind of presence that marked them as the one in charge.

For now, though, he kept quiet, content to observe while he waited to be noticed.

Liam pointed out a DNA sequence on the screen before he pulled upright. His eyes spotted the unfamiliar face among his staff causing him to pause. Did he miss the memo about a new arrival? His hand reached for his data pad as he brought up his schedule and found Wells name. The man was scheduled today it seemed.

He set the device down then walked up to the science. “I must’ve gotten my dates mixed up. Lieutenant Tyler Wells?”

Tyler straightened at the sound of his name, turning to face the approaching officer. There was a quick flicker of relief in his expression, the kind that came with finally putting a face to authority after wandering into unfamiliar territory.

“That’s right, sir,” he replied, his tone steady but carrying an easy warmth. “Lieutenant Tyler Wells, reporting as assigned.”

He adjusted the strap of his satchel once more, a habitual gesture more than a nervous one, before offering a polite nod. “Apologies if I caught you off guard — I wasn’t sure whether to interrupt or wait my turn. Seemed safer to observe.” A faint curve touched his lips, somewhere between self-aware humor and genuine courtesy.

“I’m looking forward to working under your lead.”

“Not a unwise decision, but I should be the one apologizing. I’ve had a lot on my mind lately and seems I’ve lost track of time.” Liam gestured to follow him as he began to walk toward his office.

“I will warn you, I expect a lot of my officers. The work can be challenging and hard, leaving you feeling frustrated. I do my best to avoid giving impossible tasks as I want everyone in my department to thrive.”

When the door hissed open, there appeared to be little change to the first time he arrived. It gave off a professional and utilitarian feel until one’s eyes found the desk and few trinkets scattered about. A few data pads laid across the top with a small, crystal banzai tree growing on the corner. Other personal touches were family pictures, a small desk toy and mini statues. Liam reached out a hand to stop the balls of the toy from knocking together.

“Would you like anything to drink? I find tea to be ideal for this.” He asked while facing the officer.

Tyler followed a step behind as they entered the office, his gaze quietly taking in the surroundings — the bonsai, the family photo, the deliberate order of the space. It was clear this was a place run with both structure and care.

“Understood, sir,” he said with a small nod. “I prefer clear expectations. Makes it easier to hit the ground running.” His tone carried the calm assurance of someone used to adapting quickly, though there was an undercurrent of genuine respect in his words.

When the offer came, a faint grin appeared. “Tea sounds great — I’ll trust your judgment there.” He set his satchel down beside the chair and eased into it, posture straight but relaxed.

“I’m looking forward to getting involved wherever I’m needed,” he continued. “I’ve always found the best way to learn a department’s rhythm is to get your hands dirty early.” There was a quiet enthusiasm in his tone — not boastful, just sincere. “I’m sure you’ll point me in the right direction soon enough.”

“That is reassuring.”

Liam began to punch in his order as he relayed it back to Tyler. “I think Tulsi tea might be best. Let it seep for five to ten minutes before drinking for the full effect.”

As the replicator materialized the tray and its contents, he continued the conversation. “Let us start with your interests and reasoning for joining Starfleet. It’s easier to know where you want to go rather than let others decide for you.”

Once the replicator beeped, he took up the tray and casually placed it on his desk. Her moved one cup over to Tyler and another to his side before he settled into his chair. The kettle had a steady stream of steam pipping out of its spout as he waited for Tyler to pour his first. His hands folded underneath his chin and waited for the answers to his earlier statement.

Liam walked over to his desk. He moved one cup over to Tyler and another to his side before he took a seat. Steam piped steadily from the old fashion kettle’s spout, the CSO’s form lowered comfortably into the chair. He folded his hands to rest his chin upon, waiting for the answer.
