Snip
The alarm in Rovan’s own room sounded. It wasn’t loud, it had no need to be. It was a different sound that began suddenly in the quiet. Months of sleeping lightly, with a phaser under his pillow had meant he was now accustomed to waking at unusual sounds. His yellow, catlike eyes came open immediately and he lay still a moment as his thoughts processed the sound and his eyes darted into the corners of the room, aiming to pick out shadows that didn’t belong. There were none, of course. The hand of a man who had been so very careful the past few months slid out from under the pillow, and relaxed gently.
It took only a second for the moment to pass, and Rovan rolled to his side and to his feet easily. Bare feet padding the carpet, as he walked to the living room, taking a light shirt with him as he did and slipping it on but leaving it open at the front. He got himself a glass of water and stood for a moment, looking out at the view of the stars outside his quarters as he sipped it and thought as his eyes took in the points of light. The stars were different today he decided. Two swallows and he paused, then looked around at the console. There was no light blinking, no message from Allison. “Allie,” he said quietly, and placed his glass on the table next to the window before he walked to the console and activated the screen. There was no message.
“It’s nothing to worry about, she’s in San Francisco. She likely woke up late and had to rush.” He told himself, one missed message wasn’t the end of anything although he realized he missed it. He really missed it. Leaving the console, Rovan made himself ready for the day. Dressing into his uniform and pulling on his boots, he washed his face, did his hair and then sat down at the console with breakfast. It was something a crew member with an odd accent on the Genesis had enjoyed and introduced Rovan to, he had called them, ‘weet bix’. With a little sugar and milk, and some banana they were actually very enjoyable. Once, he had tried eating them straight and immediately had discovered that the evil things had a habit of blocking your throat and making you choke if eaten that way. Some Klingon food was less dangerous like that.
“Computer, record message.” he said as he finished his first bite. “Ally, hey. I’m hoping that your day has gone well. I’m up a little early today, you know getting the ship ready.” He took another bite and chewed for a bit, “Today we have warp core balance testing, and EPS stability assessments to complete. Nothing unusual, but it is going to be a long day.” He grinned as he took another bite, his eyes searching the screen as if she was there. “I had better finish this and go, I can’t make a bad impression this early in my stay on the ship, can I? Let me know how your day was, I miss you. Love you Allison.” Again he kissed his finger and held them to the screen, then the message went dark.
Standing, Rovan collected his thoughts again, dealt with the leftovers of the breakfast and brushed his teeth. It was only a few minutes, then his quarters were empty as he left for work. On the stand beside the window, the glass of water remained.
Lt J.g. Rovan Moor.
Engineer/PilotIt was another long day for Allie, full of strained meetings and stressful waits. She brought her Galdor book along, taking the time to study their language. She constantly checked her message system in hopes that Harris would reply. She managed to get off a short text-only message to Rovan apologizing for not responding that morning, but in general outside-of-base communication was off limits.
Around noon, she was eating lunch when her comm beeped. She pressed it, curious. =/\=Miss Fleet. It has come to my attention that you have been requesting a meeting with me. I have time right now, and will be free until 1300 hours. If you wish to meet with me, make your way to room 301 in the building you are currently in.=/\=
Allison had no clue who’s voice it was speaking, but she had a guess. It must be Harris. She checked her schedule. She was free until 1400 hours, at which point they were hopefully going to give her the final verdict. She got up, closed the container her lunch was in, and hurried towards the described room.
When she got there, Allison found a small office. She knocked on the door and was admitted. Her eyes took in a small, dusty and unused room. “Admiral Harris, I presume. You wanted to see me?” She asked the man behind the desk, stepping forward and sitting on the offered chair as he nodded.
“I believe you wanted to see me is a more accurate phrase,” he said, and they began to speak.
–later–
Allison slipped into her pajamas after a refreshing shower and sat herself at her console. Her quarters at the San Fran base didn’t have a replicator, all her meals were eaten in the large cafeteria. It was strange but nice to see all the young cadets milling about, and she had caught sight of a Raka from across the room yesterday. That had been cool. They were all so young though. So very young. Had she really been that young at one point? She had… But it had been so very long ago. Longer than it should have been.
She sighed softly, then played his message, watching him eat while he talked. “Silly boy, you’re not supposed to talk with food in your mouth.”
“Computer, record message,” she said, still feeling a buzz from the meeting several hours ago, and from the news she had heard after that. Harris worked fast. “Hey Rovan,” she spoke, leaning forward for a moment, an expression of wanting to share news on her face. “I’ve had a pretty crazy day. How was your day? Guess what?! I’ve got my assignment, and I’m pretty sure you’ll be pleased with where I’ve been assigned! There’s a ship leaving from Earth tomorrow morning, and they’re getting me on it to head out into the wild yonder!”
She grabbed her hairbrush and started to tease out the small tangles in her short hair. It wasn’t that hard, with hair as short as hers was. “I’ve been assigned to the Athena. Crazy thing is, I don’t think they were planning to put me there. I met with Harris this afternoon, and he heard me out. When I mentioned you, his expression seemed to change a little. I don’t know, he’s a hard man to read. Anyways, when I went to get my assignment, they were about to give me my assignment when the lady in charge got a communique, and she looked kinda confused about it before she said I’d be going to the Athena and I’d better pack my bags. It’s leaving early in the morning, so I’m expected to be ready to leave in about an hour. So, I’ve gotta go now, but I’ll be seeing you real soon! Love you. Allie out!”
Allison Fleet
Rovan almost spat out his eggs as he listened to the last part of the message. It’s leaving early in the morning, so I’m expected to be ready to leave in about an hour. Yes, that was what she said. That meant that Allison had already packed, and had already left to reach the ship for it’s departure schedule. Depending how early that was, she could be about to board the transport in the next couple of hours. “Really, Harris assigned you to the Athena?” Even though Rovan knew he had, it was unexpected.
Rovan had worked hard to become another person the previous year, leaving the identity of Rovan Moor behind. That person was serving on the Veracruz, according to records. Instead, he had been someone completely different and Rovan had, admittedly, found settling back in as Rovan, somewhat unsettling and restless. To be Traylin, he had to become Traylin, and he had played that role very, very well. Returning to Rovan was difficult when the things that made Traylin who he was, were still sitting under the surface of Rovan. Things, emotions, that Rovan had brought to the fore to create the identity of Traylin. It was, fortunate, providence, perhaps, that Julien and now Allison were both on the same ship he had been assigned to with such haste on his return. Two people from his past, two people to anchor Rovan Moor. Allison was on his way, to him, and Rovan felt that with her, came his heart.
“Computer, display transport arrivals scheduled from Earth, carrying crew for the Athena. Identify transport carrying Allison Fleet, and display expected arrival date and time, and scheduled stops.” The information took just a second before it was on the screen before him. The transport wasn’t coming to them direct, but from another station where it was due to disembark the crew for the Athena before one of the Athena’s own Runabouts would ferry them to the Starship. It was still many days away from arriving, but it was coming. Allie was coming.
Rovan flicked on the console to send her his reply, this time it would be short, but it would reach her when she was en route to the Athena. “Allison, I can’t wait to see you. That’s fantastic news that Harris got you assigned here, congratulations on your results, I always knew you would get back in. I mean, they accepted me right? I miss you so much, and even more now I know you are on your way to me.” Rovan paused slightly and looked at the screen, he bit his lip lightly in thought and smiled. “I’ll be waiting for you, the moment you arrive. I love you, Allison Fleet. Fly safe, OK.” Again, he kissed his fingers and held them to the screen, his yellow eyes looking directly into the camera. Just for a moment, then it went black.
