The Temple was still finding its rhythm.

The lighting had been softened, just slightly—Rollin’s doing, naturally. The overheads now kissed every surface with a warmer hue. The bar glinted like a promise. The windows pulled the stars close like lovers. Somewhere in the background, a quartet of old Earth strings played something mournful and romantic—he’d asked the computer for “something with yearning.”

Rollin was reclined in a crescent booth by the window, a glass of something jewel-toned at hand. His fingers danced across a sleek PADD, the same way they might across a clavinet—languid, deliberate, enchanted.

“Let’s see what kind of story you’ve been telling the stars, Captain…”

The publicly available profile for Captain Orvos Legen was sparse, but Rollin read between the lines. He always had. A being nearly a thousand years old… alone… having watched creation bloom and fade over and over again. There was poetry in that. Maybe sorrow, too.

The image attached to the file took Rollin aback. He exhaled softly, eyes lingering.

Dark hair. Stubble. A jawline that could start wars—or end them. And a gaze that seemed just barely aware of its effect on the viewer, if at all. That was the most dangerous kind of beauty. The unweaponized kind.

Rollin tilted his head, regarding the photo like one might regard a painting that’s almost, almost speaking.

“Oh my,” he whispered, lips parting in a smile that held both mischief and admiration. “You don’t even know, do you…”

He read the rest in silence, absorbing every word with an actor’s discipline and a dreamer’s hunger. The Nexus? A forgotten past? A man who listened more than he spoke?

“How fascinating,” Rollin said at last, setting the PADD down beside his drink. “I think it’s time we met. Professionally, of course.”

He turned his face toward the ceiling arch above his booth, voice crisp and lilting as he addressed the ship itself:

=^=Computer… be a lamb. Locate Captain Orvos Legen for me, would you?=^=

-Rollin
Just Rollin. That’s quite enough, Darling.

=/\=Captain Orvos Legen is in the captain’s quarters.=/\= came the expected straight forward reply from the computer.

-Captain Orvos Legen, CO

Rollin’s brows lifted ever so slightly.

“Oh?”

He leaned back, the curve of the booth cradling him like a chaise in an opera box. The stars shimmered behind him, but his eyes were already turning inward—gears clicking, plots unfurling.

The captain wasn’t on the bridge. He wasn’t in the ready room. He wasn’t even in some distant lab contemplating the secrets of the stars. No… the captain was in his quarters.

And that, of course, meant something.

Rollin plucked up his glass and downed the remainder of the drink with a dramatic finality, lips smacking softly as he exhaled the lingering notes of firefruit and bitters. Then, in one fluid motion, he stood—his white-and-gold robes rippling like banners in an unseen breeze.

He adjusted a single gold ring, then the fall of his collar.

“Duty calls,” he murmured to the air, before addressing the room in full. “Do try not to fall in love with anyone while I’m gone.”

With a final glance to the stars and the lonely ache they cast on the velvet interior of The Temple, Rollin glided out—his exit as much a statement as his entrance had been.

-Rollin
Just Rollin. That’s quite enough, Darling.
