With a shimmer of energized particles arriving, coalescing the entire away team plus attending medical personnel appeared in the main open floor area of sickbay.

Serena Stone lay unconscious, bleeding, targeted onto one of the biobeds with Doctors Grey and Bailey next to her. The rest were away from most of the equipment. Smoke curling still from her uniform. Large chunks of jagged, twisted metal jutting from her legs obscenely. Blood pooling and spreading beneath her already.

Elara was already rushing over with a cart of medical equipment meant for stabilizing Tier One trauma patients, a crash cart on steroids. “Oh not good,” she said, worry in her eyes. “Rena, you owe me, again.” Without waiting, she loaded a hypo with a cocktail of pain-relievers and anti-biotics, then sprayed a local coagulant over the most immediate and apparent wounds she could see. =^=Privacy screen.=^=

A permeable translucent forcefield snapped into place. “We’re going to have to get her out of this uniform. It’s melted on.”

Lt. j.g. Elara Dain, (Doctor)

Adrenaline pumping through her body and her new empathy attuned to everyone in the space, Janna stepped backwards and just stared at what the doctors were doing… and her friend. She couldn’t look away, as if doing so might mean something would happen. But if she was watching Serena, then Serena was still there. There was a chance.

Ben stood up and tossed off his coat “Cloth scissors and a laser scalpel. Get me an XO blood package, prepare for a transfusion, get the machine ready” He was busy cleaning his hands as an NE helped him into the surgical scrubs “And remind me to bash that transporter chief across the head” There was no humor in his voice “Somebody read off the Biobed information” Anyone who’d known Ben for some time knew that he was in a foul mood, his threat of bashing the transporter chief was a legitimate concern.

Ela took a breath and scanned the biobed readouts. “Blood pressure’s 80 over 40. Heart rate at 148. Respiratory rate 34 — shallow. Blood oxygen’s at 88% and falling. Core temp is 35.77 Celsius. GCS six — intubation recommended.”

Above the bed, translucent diagnostic overlays flared to life — a rotating holographic image of the patient’s body with pulsing red flags marking trauma points. The biobed was already in emergency stabilization mode, auto-administering coagulants and managing oxygen intake through dermal injectors along the patient’s arms and neck. Internal sensors whirred silently, feeding real-time data to the surrounding monitors.

Elara’s bloodied fingers moved fast, flipping open her tricorder to cross-reference. Despite the tight knot in her throat — despite the face on that biobed being someone she knew from the Valkyrie — she didn’t let it slow her down.

“Estimated blood loss, about 1.5 liters,” she continued. “Spleen rupture confirmed. Pancreatic damage suspected. Lactate levels elevated — we’re looking at metabolic acidosis. No pain response.”

The surgical field around Serena’s torso shimmered faintly as the biobed began deploying sterile microclamp projectors — just enough to buy time until a scalpel could reach flesh. Elara shifted her scan upward and frowned.

“TBI confirmed. Cerebral edema detected. Intracranial pressure is climbing fast — she’s at risk of herniation if we don’t relieve it soon.”

In short? A trainwreck. But most of it was mechanical — and that meant it could be fixed.

A light on the readout caught her attention. “Biobed’s initiating short-term stasis field — localized to thoracic and cranial cavities,” Elara said as the shimmering halo locked into place over Serena’s torso. “We’ve got maybe two minutes of suppression before systemic instability returns.”

Benjamin nodded, prepared for surgery and quarantine fields on full =^=Computer, activate noise cancellation, play surgical mix three=^= The computer started playing a mid-tempo instrumental jazz with a piano at the forefront. “Doctor Dain, please intubate. Nurse, set blood and the Plasma Infusion unit, set the PIU to treat the metabolic acidosis” Ben gave his directions in a calm and clear voice, it’d been a while since his last surgery.

“We don’t have time for chemically induced relief, I’ll have to tap to remove the oedema. Show me where the fluid buildup is” The last statement was for the computer to focus the hologram; he needed to know if he only needed to remove the liquid or fully open the skull. He was excited; it’d been too long since he’d been able to use his neurosurgical skills. He made certain not to smile, he was mostly certain that this was not the appropriate time, but he was getting to do surgery again.
