Two more days had passed, the messages between them continuing like clockwork. Rovan would come home, shower and get his dinner. Then he would sit and have dinner as he watched Allison’s message. To him, it was as if he was having dinner with her every night, then tell her about his day and settle in to watch a vid of something. On this particular day, Rovan had come home and followed his regular routine, but his heart was troubled.
“Computer, begin recording.” He said, and smiled as the light came on. “Hey Allie, guess who? I loved your message, I’m so happy to hear your tests went well, just a few more results tom come back now.” Rovan took a deep breathe and leaned forward into the camera, “I haven’t heard from Harris yet. It’s not surprising in his line of work, but I was hoping to have heard something, at least. Allie my love, I’m not doubting that we are going to see each other, soon, but we are readying the Athena to leave space dock here. The scuttlebutt is that our next mission has been received, and we have been making sure everything is in order the past two days, more so today. Nothing official has come down but, we’re engineers love. We know when we are making the ship ready to sail.”
His plate of dinner had been pushed aside, that was unusual for him as he normally cleaned up before sending her a return message. He wasn’t hungry. “We both know that means we could be heading anywhere, and with the amount of time it takes to get here from Sanfran, well. You can guess my worry.” He smiled again now, and ran his fingers through his hair, “Let me know how your tests have gone, I’m sorry this is shorter, but I need to go get sleep. We are up early tomorrow, more preparation to do. I miss you, Allie. With everything I am I do.” This time, Rovan’s yellow eyes looked straight into the camera as he kissed his fingers, then touched the screen. “Goodnight Allie, have a fantastic day. Love you.”

Engineering/Pilot.Allison Fleet woke up with a groan to yet another early morning alarm. She used to be good with these early mornings before moving to San Francisco, but the whole three hour difference had thrown her off. She had started these couple weeks with some major trouble staying up much later than eight or nine, waking up at three in the morning. But as she found staying up later easier, waking up early, especially with her unstable sleeping habits, increasingly difficult.
Regardless, she pulled herself blearily out of bed and into the bathroom. She stuck her face in the sink, splashing water onto her eyes and letting the cool stream of liquid wake her up properly. She snatched her hairbrush from the shelf and clumsily pulled on her clothes as she stepped over to her console to see Rovan’s latest message. Each time he messaged her it filled her with joy to see him again.
This message filled her with dread, however. Leaving soon? She gulped. She couldn’t miss her chance to see him again. Today, she didn’t hav any testing planned, just a early meeting with some officials before they decided her final assignment. Completely forgetting to message Rovan, she hastily wrote a message to Admiral Harris asking him if there was a holdup in news about the chances of her being put on the Athena. She rushed out the door, forgetting that she hadn’t gotten word to Rovan.

The alarm in Rovan’s own room sounded. It wasn’t loud, it had no need to be. It was a different sound that began suddenly in the quiet. Months of sleeping lightly, with a phaser under his pillow had meant he was now accustomed to waking at unusual sounds. His yellow, catlike eyes came open immediately and he lay still a moment as his thoughts processed the sound and his eyes darted into the corners of the room, aiming to pick out shadows that didn’t belong. There were none, of course. The hand of a man who had been so very careful the past few months slid out from under the pillow, and relaxed gently.
It took only a second for the moment to pass, and Rovan rolled to his side and to his feet easily. Bare feet padding the carpet, as he walked to the living room, taking a light shirt with him as he did and slipping it on but leaving it open at the front. He got himself a glass of water and stood for a moment, looking out at the view of the stars outside his quarters as he sipped it and thought as his eyes took in the points of light. The stars were different today he decided. Two swallows and he paused, then looked around at the console. There was no light blinking, no message from Allison. “Allie,” he said quietly, and placed his glass on the table next to the window before he walked to the console and activated the screen. There was no message.
“It’s nothing to worry about, she’s in San Francisco. She likely woke up late and had to rush.” He told himself, one missed message wasn’t the end of anything although he realized he missed it. He really missed it. Leaving the console, Rovan made himself ready for the day. Dressing into his uniform and pulling on his boots, he washed his face, did his hair and then sat down at the console with breakfast. It was something a crew member with an odd accent on the Genesis had enjoyed and introduced Rovan to, he had called them, ‘weet bix’. With a little sugar and milk, and some banana they were actually very enjoyable. Once, he had tried eating them straight and immediately had discovered that the evil things had a habit of blocking your throat and making you choke if eaten that way. Some Klingon food was less dangerous like that.
“Computer, record message.” he said as he finished his first bite. “Ally, hey. I’m hoping that your day has gone well. I’m up a little early today, you know getting the ship ready.” He took another bite and chewed for a bit, “Today we have warp core balance testing, and EPS stability assessments to complete. Nothing unusual, but it is going to be a long day.” He grinned as he took another bite, his eyes searching the screen as if she was there. “I had better finish this and go, I can’t make a bad impression this early in my stay on the ship, can I? Let me know how your day was, I miss you. Love you Allison.” Again he kissed his finger and held them to the screen, then the message went dark.
Standing, Rovan collected his thoughts again, dealt with the leftovers of the breakfast and brushed his teeth. It was only a few minutes, then his quarters were empty as he left for work. On the stand beside the window, the glass of water remained.
