Faye was quickly on her feet and nodded as a smile slipped onto her face. “Yes, let’s!” she said, eager to fill in the blanks on the situation so she could work out a plan. “Let’s meet Scales. Which, I assume he can eat replicated greenery now that his source is gone?”
~Faye Calloway, CIO
Liam enjoyed seeing her enthusiasm over the project. He turned and walked out into the corridor, leading the way to the labs. Upon hearing her question, he took a moment to recall.
“Yes, occasionally. His main diet is insects and once a month, a small rodent.” Liam began to explain as he made sure to keep to one side of the hallway, “We don’t waste time in replacing them when we can. Anyone that enters his zone, Scales will climb onto and extend his jaw out. Just gently run your finger along the jawline. Otherwise, he’ll start to jump from one shoulder to the other.”

Faye shot Madison a sideways glance. “Ummm, and if I’m not comfortable with that? Will Scales freak out? I can’t always predict what might be sensorily too much for me,” Faye said.
~Faye Calloway, CIO
“If you make any sudden and aggressive movements, he might. Otherwise, you can pull him off of you and he’ll wander off to the next person.” Noticing the unease over the contact, he than offered an alternative. “If you want, I can heat up my palms and it will draw his attention. I can also ask one of the other officers to put in the plants or you can develop a routine with him. He’s easy to lure to places with food. Especially hornworms.”

Faye nodded slowly, taking all of the information in. “I will test it out and see how it goes. I figure it’ll just be something I have to get used to, ut if I have real issues, then I will definitely let you know. Anything else I should know? I’ll read through the info you gave me, and I can do so very quickly. Would it be better for me to do that now or is there anything else you need to tell me before we go in?”
~Faye Calloway, CIO
“Nothing that I can recall at the moment.” Liam stated as they arrived at the door. He pressed a button causing the door to hiss open and reveal several exhibits. Upon one was a sign that read: Scales’ House. There were flourishes of flora patterns and a drawn chibi stylized replica of the animal within. On the inside were a few twisting trees, several bare patches of earth and torn foliage.
Calloway tilted her head and studied the habitat, and the sign.
Upon setting his sights on the sign, Lian hadn’t been a fan at first. However, the other officers found it motivating and so he allowed it. “This is his habit. Apologies for the sign. The Junior staff had an artist and she wanted to practice her skill. I saw no harm in it.”
“It’s… unique. Kind of pretty,” Faye said.
“It has its own charm.”
His hand pointed to the work station nearby. “That’s where you’ll be growing the plants. We set it up nearby for convenience.”

Faye moved over and surveyed the workstation which was set up for basic plant propagation under grow lights. She gave a nod. “This will do.”
Moving back to the habitat, she peered inside, looking for the reptile she’d be helping out.

Liam pressed a button on the enclosure’s console. Data about the temperature, last feeding, and more raced by his eyes. He frowned. It was nearly an hour past feeding time and no evidence of food was set in his tray.
“Well, time for his feeding and I don’t see the officer around. So, ready to catch a glimpse?” Liam asked as he unlocked the drawer and pulled out a few large insects.
-CSO, Liam J. Madison, Sci
“Sure,” Faye said with a nod. “I’m more comfortable with someone showing me the ins and outs anyway, so, if you have tips and info, just tell me. I have a very good memory.” An understatement but the truth enough for this circumstance.
~Faye Calloway, CIO
“Coming in or observing from the outside?” Liam asked, preferring to clarify her whereabouts without assumption.
“I’ll observe from the outside for now,” Faye said. There were too many unknowns and while she could be impulsive at times, this was not one of them.
Once she made her decision, he walked to the shelving storage. With a few quick presses of buttons, a canister was summoned. He popped it open with a quick twist then entered the habitat. With a deep breath, he began to heat up his hand and wait.
Everything was still for what felt like minute until the ferns on the ground rustled. A blurry green streak bolted from cover and latched onto his leg. He gritted his teeth as the claws dug in and carried it upward onto his arm. A bright green lizard about the size of an iguana settled with its frilled chest on his palm. Feathers painted with pale yellows, dark browns, and some black curved out from the crown. It gave him a bit of a fan along the spine and back of the neck. Scales tilted his head at Liam with an expected blink. Despite the reptilian eyes, a sense of intelligence lurked beneath them.
The CSO’s hand tilted the canister toward the creature who began to crunch up the insects eagerly.
“This is Scales.” He extended his arm a bit to give Calloway a good look.

“Interesting,” she said with genuine curiosity, but made no move to enter the enclosure. Seeing how Liam winced in pain was enough for her to want to avoid that for now. “How much of Scales’ diet is insect based versus plant?”
~Faye Calloway, CIO
Scales, as expected, refuse to move far from Liam’s hand. He pivoted in place as his snout dug into the canister and greedily devoured the insects inside. His head tilted to keep his eye on the woman peeking through the glass. Occasionally, his feathers flexed and spread out. The colors caught the light and cast a brighter hue upon them.
“Based on what we observed, plants make up between ten to twenty-five percent of it. The rest is insect based.” Liam stated as he regretted not wearing the glove to handle the lizard. Thankfully, any minor scratch that gazed his skin would fade within minutes. “After this meal, he’ll end up using my hand as a warming rock.”
