“Yes,” Lillian said with a nod of understanding. “She’s been on leave from Starfleet for the past few months, spending time in the big house. She sent quite a few messages to you,” she commented.

“Yes she did.” He told Lillian, “I’ve just been watching them. She has an amazing, and huge, family. I’m more than happy that she was able to connect with you. I know how lost she felt on the Genesis when she arrived.” Rovan bit his lip slightly as he watched Lillian, “Is Allison home? Or did I miss her to the farm?”

“I’m afraid she’s not on the Farm at the moment. She’s in San Francisco, in the process of getting tested to make sure she’s ready to go back into space. Her time displacement and all. They’re testing her ability to cope with modern technology, and you know, the other stuff they usually test Cadets for. I remember my brother going through that stuff right before he graduated. Oof. Anyways,” she seemed to realize that she had been rambling somewhat. “I’m sorry I can’t get her to you. Maybe you should call her there in a couple hours? It’s a bit early at the moment…”

Lillian Fleet

“Of course, San Francisco.” He nodded, “It’s about 3.30am there just now, she likely would have been awake when I got back from my shift.” Rovan leaned back in his chair and ran his fingers through his hair, the action showing the slight ridges above his eyebrows and running vertically from the bridge of his nose to his hair line more clearly. He wasn’t one of the Ktarians with large forehead bulges, his part human ancestry seeing to have toned them down along with his family line tending to have a different ridge structure. “If you could let me know where I can contact her, I would be grateful.”

“Thank you for letting me know,” he said to the woman, “I am sorry for disturbing you at this early hour, I’ll try to get in touch with Allison later on in the morning.” Rovan moved to end the call but then paused, and looked at Lillian.

“Thank you, and your family. For looking after Allie, I mean.” He said softly, “She mentioned in the messages how alone she had felt when she woke up. If I had known she was going to, if they had told me there was more of a chance. Well…” he trailed off slightly in thought, then looked at Lillian and smiled. “Then maybe she wouldn’t have come home to you when she needed to the most. Oh, and the gingerbread Galaxy Class Starship was by far the most deserving of winning the competition, good choice.” He broke into a grin as he said it.

“I hope you’re able to contact her soon,” Lillian said with a small smile, quickly sending him Allison’s contact information. “Good luck,” she smiled, ending the call.

-------------- A short time later--------------------

Rovan sat back from the console and yawned, with a few hours still to go before Allie would reasonably be awake, and knowing that she was in the middle of testing for reassignment he didn’t want to wake her or make her late for anything so, he had sent a few messages to people he knew and recorded Allison a message just for her. When she woke up, she would have the message on her console and if there was time, she could let him know to call. If not, she would have a message from him to let her know he was back, and missing her like mad. It was the least he could do to let her know he was alive and thinking of her.

Rovan pressed send, and smiled to himself. It was a tired smile, but he was content that he had done everything he could. The likelihood of Allison being assigned where he was, was remote, the odds staggering with the number of ships and destinations available. The Athena might not even need more scientist currently. But, Allie would know he was there, now.

Standing again, he made one final pass of the window that looked out into space and fell comfortably onto his bed. Setting the alarm, Rovan drifted into a deep sleep, far more settled than he had been when he had tried to sleep earlier.

----------------- Message to Allison Fleet--------------

A few hours later, a hand emerged from a pile of blankets to shut off the alarm that was rudely blaring. Allison sat up, yawning widely, and rubbed her eyes to get rid of the crust that polluted them. She swung her legs off the bed and stumbled over to her small bathroom, splashing water in her face. There was an annoying beep in her ears, and she growled slightly to herself. “I thought I turned off that stupid alarm…”

Then she realized it wasn’t the same sound as her alarm. “Huh, must be a message?” she wandered over to her console and pressed on the message that was causing the annoying sound.

The message to Allie was unnamed, but marked important and urgent. He hoped that would get her attention enough to watch it, something simple but a surprise nonetheless. Once it was played, it would display the Starfleet logo for a few seconds before the screen would change to the message from Rovan, of him sitting in his seat, late at night and smiling at her gently through the screen.

Allison nearly fell, her legs not able to support her for a few moments. She grabbed her chair and tightly gripped the frame as she stopped breathing for a moment. “Rovan…” she gasped.

“Hey you. Gosh I have missed you Allie, so darn much.” He paused now, and there was a silence for a few seconds as he appeared to be collecting his thoughts and figuring our what to say next.

“It’s harder than it looks you know, this messaging thing,” he motioned around himself to where, on her screen, were the edges of the display. “I have so much I want to tell you, so much to let you know that I want to get it all out right now, none of my thoughts are straight so, forgive me if I ramble OK? I’ll likely ramble more than your Aunt Lillian just did, but she was lovely. Hopefully I didn’t wake her up though, was 6.30am too early to call?” he bit his lip as he looked into the camera, making sure he looked very innocent. “They live on a farm, right? It can’t have been too early.”

“During the winter, yeah, a bit early,” she muttered, finally getting the wits about her to move around the chair and sit down. He was alive. Not just alive like she knew he was out there, but alive like messaging her and… messaging her. He looked… older, in a way. Like his mission had put some stress on his soul that showed in his eyes. She reached out and touched the screen, wishing he wasn’t light-years away.

His face grew serious for a moment, not sad or angry, just reflective perhaps. “Allison I’m sorry, for leaving and for taking on that mission. If I had known you were going to wake up, I would never have left your side. I mean I hoped, and I asked whatever divine power from any race I could to bring you back to me. But then they came to me with a mission the needed me for. There were many reasons that I took the mission, but we can talk about that another time. I’m sorry for not being there when you woke up and, I was out of.. contact.. while I was away. Nobody told me that you were awake, I guess that was because they couldn’t take the chance something might go wrong if, anyone else found out.” Rovan spoke quietly as he looked into the camera, not once letting his yellow, catlike eyes drift away from the screen and looking straight through and into hers.

“It’s… it’s okay,” she said softly. It was strange, but now that she knew he was safe, she didn’t care that he’d been gone, not as much as she had cared. It was like… most of the anger and sadness was from not knowing if he was safe or not. Her hand lingered on the screen, not wanting to move, wanting him to hop out of the screen and say hi in that casual way he always did.

“I’m back now Allie, and I’m OK. I’m safe, and I miss you more than you know. Far more than you know. When I returned I tried to get back to the Genesis, and you, but they wouldn’t let me and rushed me through debrief and reintegration. Nobody would tell me anything and after about two weeks, they assigned me to another ship. I’m on the Athena, Allie. I’ve been assigned to Engineering and Helm/Shuttle duties. Oh and I got a promotion as well, I am now a Lieutenant, junior grade, but still a Lieutenant.” He held up his Starfleet uniform to show the yellow of Operations and the pips on his collar. “One of those Galdori, the race from the book you got for Christmas, is the Athena’s Executive Officer. I haven’t see her yet, I’ve been down in Engineering mostly so far, it’s a big ship Allie. Huge, big enough for your family even!”

Allison glanced over at the book on her shelf. It was only a month in her possession, but it was already covered in notes scrawled in the margins, sticky notes and highlighter marks to keep track of certain passages, and one annoyingly cute bookmark one of the kids had made for her. “Big ship… what did he say the name was? Computer, playback the last 10 seconds…” Athena. She knew at that moment, she had to get on that ship… She heard the next couple seconds over again and realized what he had said. “A promotion! I’ll have to congratulate you in person.”

Dropping the uniform back down, Rovan reached over and picked up a cup of coffee, taking a big drink before he placed it down, outside of the camera shot and looked at her again, grinning. “I got your messages, tonight. They all came through at once. I think that once my file came active again, all my mail they were holding was released and all your messages popped up when I came back from my shift. I was so excited, so happy to see you and hear you that I could barely wait to call, so I watched all of them.” Rovan let out a long and low whistle. “You sure do have a lot of family, it’s huge. I’m not even sure they would have fit in my parents old freighter.”

“They’re my brother’s descendants, and not even all of them,” she muttered quietly. She had finished those files that Kenny and his descendants made for her, and was shocked at the sheer magnitude of the family. There were Fleets literally all over the Galaxy! She was glad that he got her messages… although there were a few moments that, looking back, she somewhat wished she hadn’t sent out to him. It was obviously too late for that now. “And your parent’s freighter was tiny, it’s not my family’s fault that there are so many of them!”

“So, I hear that you are in San Francisco undergoing testing for return to the fleet. I have to say, I’m a little nervous you are going to be assigned somewhere I can’t reach you. OK not nervous, Allie. I’m scared, terrified of the possibility. I’ve sent a message to, a friend. That Admiral you said you met? His name is Admiral Harris. He’s based in San Francisco as well at the Starfleet Headquarters there, maybe you should get in touch with him, if you like? He owes me, us, a few favors. If you want, maybe we can call in a few.” His grin got slightly wider and he had now lost all of the pretense of innocence.

Harris? Oh yeah, she remembered the guy. He’d been kind to tell her Rovan was out there, even if it broke protocol a little to do that. “I’m going to get myself on the Athena, I promise. They said I can request a ship and it will be taken into consideration!” she exclaimed, forgetting he wasn’t actually there. She deflated slightly. “I’m going to get on your ship, I promise…”

He was silent for a few moments, and his grin dropped back down to, oddly, a shy smile and his eyes dropped slightly before they lifted and looked straight into the console again, the shyness replaced with something more determined. “I miss you, Allison Fleet. You don’t know how much. I watched every one of your messages. I loved your hair short, it suited you but I think I might miss your hair being long, just so i can curl a stray lock behind your ear and look into your eyes. I’m going to try everything I can to see you again, you spoke in one of your messages, about us. I don’t think I ever thought of us as us back on the Genesis, did you? It was always just so easy, so right when I was with you that I only realized what we had when you fell into the coma, when I lost you. I sat with you every night, every morning and wished I could trade places with you, fix it, bring you back to me. It was then that I think I realized that us was what we had become and what I needed.”

He sighed softly and smiled as he looked into the camera, obviously imagining that Ally was looking at him too. “I miss you Allie, I need you. There wasn’t a single day for the last, however many months I was away, that I didn’t go to sleep thinking of you. Finding out you were awake, and you were safe, and that you remembered me meant so much to me, it sparked something in me that I never knew I was missing. You don’t know the relief that I felt, the happiness when I opened that message and heard your voice, saw you. Thank you for making me those messages, I loved them and we have something now to watch on a new anniversary, the day you came back to me.”

She found herself on the verge of crying at this revelation, the emotion in his eyes causing her own eyes to tear up. “Gosh Darn it! Why is space so big?” She asked the wall, pausing the video so she could pace for a few moments. Her hair was still a mess, she was in her pyjamas. It was at that moment she realized the time. She had hit the snooze button too many times, and then spent time on this. “Computer, play the rest of the audio of this message a little louder,” she said, running to get her clothes and get dressed and her hair brushed.

“So, Allie. I better let you go and get ready for your exams and tests. I better get some sleep. If you have time when you get this, send me a ping and I will call you. If not, I know that you are going to do amazing today. You’re that kinda girl, my girl. I love you Allison Fleet. What was it you said in your video? Heart of hearts?” He placed a hand over where his heart in his chest was, looking at her and smiling. “My heart beats for you, Allie. I do love you. We will talk soon, you know where I am now. Bye Allison, love you.” With a final smile, Rovan reached forward for the screen. Just before he turned it off he paused, and looked back at her again. He grinned, then winked one of his yellow, catlike eyes, then the screen went dark.

She was pulling on her shoes when the last moment struck, and she stopped for a moment. “I love you too…” she said softly, stuck like that for a few moments before the whole “I’m going to be late” thing kicked in and she got her but into gear, grabbing her hairbrush and talking as she frantically brushed out the tangles. “Computer, send Rovan a message, text only. ‘Hey there. I’d love to call you back right now but I’m running late, I’ll try to contact you asap. Stay safe out there, my dashing pilot. I hope to see you soon. Love you… Allison.’ Computer, end message. Please send it right away,” she exclaimed as she ran out the door.

OOC: I **love ** this thread. Well done, both of you. :) ~Linds

OOC: Thank you, I am loving writing them again

IC: The return ping sounded, it wasn’t loud but it was the audible ping that personal messages created. Rovans’ eyes opened almost before the sound had died away. It was years of training as a fighter pilot, he thought, the state you rested in yet were alert and needing to be in the cockpit at a moments notice, not wiping sleep out of your eyes. He also knew it was the pure expectation, the excitement of hoping that Allie was going to respond some how.

Moving to the console he leaned forward and brought up the message, all at once slightly disappointed that it was only text, but at the same time elated that finally, he had managed to contact her directly, and she had responded directly. His yellow eyes skimmed the message while his mouth formed a gentle smile, he could tell by the brief message that she had been rather late. Closing his eyes, Rovan remembered one or two occasions when Allison had done the same on the Genesis. A late night of watching old Earth movies or the latest Ktarian music festival documentary had meant both of them had often slept in. Although to be honest, the Ktarian metabolism meant that he needed far less sleep than Allie did, he had just lost time watching her sleep.

That thought made his smile drop slightly, but only in thought. He had watched her sleep. Lain awake for a time before she awoke after the two of them had fallen asleep together on the couch, and watched her content sighs and soft snores. Even stroked her hair softly as she had moaned from a nightmare. Then, in the morning he had pretended to wake with her, and laughed as the two of them rushed to get ready for duty, Allison brushing her hair frantically and grabbing her shoes as they left whichever quarters they had been in. His smile returned as he understood that he had always loved her, even if he didn’t know it.

Rovan keyed the comm and sent one simple vid message back, knowing she had already left for the day. “Hey Allie, I’m hoping you had a great day. I’m sorry for making you late, I was thrilled to get your message back. I know our times are going to be tricky to work out for a bit, but I’m including my Duty Roster in this message. Maybe that way we can find the best time to call. Maybe you should go and see Harris, I want to see you again soon, need to. I’ve already messaged him, so maybe we will both get a nice surprise hmm? For now, I have to go sleep. Duty calls soon but, you have no idea how much of a smile I am going to be carrying with me now. I love you Allie, goodnight.”

Sending the message, Rovan stood and yawned, and moved back to his bed. Not long afterwards, and he was sleeping soundly, a small smile on the edges of his lips.

– Several Hours later–

Allison returned to her quarters from a long day of re-training and assessment. She flopped down on her bed and nearly fell asleep without even taking off her shoes, but then she remembered the fact that she got a message from Rovan that morning. Immediately, she bolted up into a sitting position and half jumped half fell off her bed and almost ran over to her desk. “Computer, check for new messages!!” she exclaimed, leaning forward. There was one new message, and she hastily opened it, letting his words play.

When the message was finished, she was nearly jumping in her seat as she scanned her eyes over the schedule he had sent her. From what she could tell, he was a couple hours behind her, which meant it would probably be a few hours before he was home. Shit. She couldn’t wait up for him to be awake so they could talk!! She got up, aggravated. Seriously, so close and yet… They still couldn’t talk. It was 4 hours till he would be finished his shift! It drove her crazy all day and her superiors had been somewhat aggravated with her for her lack of attention the whole day, but she had been so busy remembering and thinking. “Computer, play back Rovan’s message from earlier,” she instructed the console, and she played through the entire other message, picking up on small details her mind had missed in the absolute reeling fit of shock it had been entrenched in the first time she listened.

She paced for a bit. “Computer, begin recording,” she turned to the console and slid into the seat, leaning forward. “Hey, Rovan!! I miss you like crazy! You wouldn’t believe how crazy this re-certification stuff is. Oh, man, there’s so much I want to tell you, so much I want to ask!” she pulled back slightly, taking a breath. “I miss you…” she muttered, annoyed by the whole situation. She had so much energy, suddenly, and there was a visible tension in her posture. “You made me late this morning,” she finally settled, releasing a long breath. “I’ve looked at your roster, and I’m afraid there’s not much I can say. On all the days up til my final assessment and assignment, you’re got evening duty that crosses over with me getting home… and I’m already in enough trouble for being distracted today I don’t think it’d go well if I was exhausted from staying up for a comm call. I’m afraid we’re going to have to stick to these until…” she trailed off, sighing lightly.

“Is there an arboretum on the Athena? I’ve heard it’s a pretty big ship. Here’s to hoping their arboretum has some moon-blossoms. Or a slightly too-small bench,” she chuckled lightly, a reminiscent smile coming over her face. She pulled up the last message he had sent her and gazed into his yellow eyes. She remembered waking up beside him on the couch several times, and the smile became slightly warmer. “How are you settling in onto the Athena? You mentioned the XO was from Galdor in your first message. I kinda didn’t absorb that the first time through. Honestly that’s… pretty awesome. Have you met her yet?”

She got up and paced for a few moments, then sat down again. She fan her hand through her hair from front to back, tousling it a bit. “About what you said about us…” she let out a long breath. “I’m honestly not sure what you said, but I think I got the gist,” she said as she leaned forward so that her eyes would be clearer in the visual footage. “I want there to be an us. I don’t know if it will be right away if I get onto the Athena. But who knows what will happen when we see one another’s faces once more… I know I keep saying it out loud, but I miss you terribly. I wish I didn’t have all this bloody training and I could take a magical transporter that took me all the way to the Athena, and especially right all the way to you. I love you, Rovan… I knew in my heart that I loved you before I got injured, but I know in my head now. And it hurts to be so far away…”

Allison leaned back and closed her eyes for a few moments. “I love you, Rovan. And I want to see you soon. Allison out.” She sent the message, then got undressed and crawled into bed, exhausted but elated.
