She looked at Khabal and shrugged. “Well, we had originally gone to the holodeck because I thought my garden program made a great spot for a meal, picnic-style. We could still do that. You only saw a small piece of it, after all. But I’m also open to other places if you have a preference.” Which for Faye was no small thing given she generally had very set preferences. ‘Going with the flow’ was not her general state of being.

Khabal shook his head.

“No, it’s good. We can go back, I’ll just have to keep in mind that I can’t use the step to move around the environment.” he replied gesturing Faye to lead the way.

“Yeah, you might actually need to use your legs,” Faye deadpanned as she stepped out of Sickbay and made their way back to the holosuite.

“Oh, I do use my legs.” Khabal said sounding slightly confused, “Why wouldn’t I?”

The program was still running, so she simply stepped in and breathed deeply. Yes, it was simulated conditions, but the smelled green and there was a tad more humidity. She smirked wondering what he would make of the glass house. But later, maybe.

“Okay, where would you prefer to eat? It’s just us so it’s not like it’s busy with people unless we program it to be, but we have lots of options. You can pick, but my suggestions would be either by the pond or up on The Hill.” She had her preference, but it was his choice and there was no where in this garden she didn’t like to be.

Khabal looked at the two places she suggested.

“Well the hilltop would be tactically advantageous but near the water would be more relaxing.” he commented, “I’m going to assume that this program doesn’t have random combat encounters installed in it so I’ll pick the pond.”

She almost made another one of her quips but then decided against it. Her humour was very particular and he didn’t seemed to get it, which was fine. in fact, it kind of amused her given she didn’t always pick up on others’ humour.

Given the garden was only two decks high, there was only so much in the way of trees that could be in the space, but Faye had designed it using slow growing trees that didn’t grow too high in the first place. Still, she had managed to cultivate a ‘grove’ that had a path running through it. Next to that path was a small pond. The filtration system and pumps kept water moving through it, but the main water source was the stream that actually started at the top of the hill. It was one of the infrastructure challenges she had been most proud of figuring out, especially since the garden had to be as much of a closed loop system as possible.

Leading him up the path, Faye veered off it to where a moss and grass clearing was next to the pond. “Computer, produce a large picnic blanket on the flat grassy spot under the kyah tree. The air shimmered and under the tree with the largest canopy (and rather large leaves) a blue and white picnic blanket appeared. Faye grinned and moved over, slipping off her boots and setting them to the side before she sat on the blanket and sat cross legged.

“So, we can have the computer generate any food we want. You said you were hungry. What would you life?”

“My dietary requirements are a little different but, since we’re eating for pleasure…” Khabal said something that the UT didn’t or couldn’t translate.

Khabal sat expectantly.

Faye blinked. “I don’t understand,” she said simply. She missed something obvious about his statement and at least now she knew she could be her blunt self about it.

~Faye Calloway, CIO

“Hmmm. It’s a root vegetable, high in alkaloids, cut into slices about so thick…” Khabal held his fingers about a centimeter apart, “Cooked at low heat till the outside is crispy, soft on the inside, and seasoned to taste.” Khabal explained as he took a seat on the ground.

Faye shook her head.”I was confused because by the phrasing of your sentence I couldn’t tell whether you wanted to eat here or not. The not being able to know you were asking the computer about food, only made the confusion worse. But, thankfully, the holodeck can replicate food for us.” Unzipping her boots, she set them to the side and stretched out her legs, crossing her feet at the ankles. She was debating what she might eat and let her brain go off on multiple tangents while she gazed at the pond.

Khabal followed suit and took off his boots, unwrapping them from his legs exposing what could be assumed as the handle of a weapon strapped to his calf. His toes were unnaturally long and when he flexed them they had unexpected lateral range of movement. The nails were thick and a deep gray with a matte look. Then he flexed backward at what would normally be the arch, the top of his toes brushing against the front of his ankles.

“That feels good. This is as good a spot as any and aesthetically pleasing. It reminds me if one of me favorite places on the archology ship I grew up on.”

Faye took him in with unabashed interest, her curious mind ever cycling. The more she learned about Khabal, the more questions she had. Yep, she was going to ahve to do some research. A part of her was surprised she hadn’t yet, but another part of her understood that the other distractions in her life had tempered some of her more curious ‘quirks’.

Khabal turned his eyes back to Faye.

“So, this is your home turf, what would you recommend I try from your favorite cuisines?”

OOC: Sorry if there are any mistakes, i’m typing entirely left handed rn.

Faye looked around the garden that was really just a 2-deck high metal container garden, but a highly sophisticated and well planned one. Her gaze returned to him and her teeth tugged on her lower lip. “Well, if this were different circumstances, I’d offer to make you hasperat, but we’re not that good of friends yet.” The yet surprised even her given her initial unease around him. But I grew up on a small self-sufficient colony. We gre, hunted, fished and gathered most of our own food. We couldn’t, and didn’t want to rely on supply ships and the power supplies replicators demand. I grew up with a variety of cuisines, but Bajoran and Vulcan foods were common ones I ate. A good plomeek soup or hasperat is comfort food to me.” That was, despite how it might seem, the simpler answer.

~Faye Calloway, CIO

Khabal leaned forward.

“We’re friends?” Khabal said looking a little surprised, “I’m not used to hearing anyone regard me as friend.”

“Anyway… Let’s have both.” he suggested blushing a little. His blush caused his skin to go slightly gray.
