“Computer, run program Calloway-Alpha-2,” she called. The space morphed from the grey walls into a vast industrial space (that looked like it was on a starship) that had been converted into a massive garden. But garden was an understatement. This was no arboretum like the three they had on the Athena. No, this was a carefully designed place, meant to be explored and enjoyed, both for general relaxation but also as an outlet and a place of connection and scientific study. She blew out a breath. “This is the garden I designed and built, with help of course, on the USS Manhattan, my last posting. My best friend sent this program to me so I would have it as a place of refuge when I needed it. I figured it could be a nice place for a meal. Makes for a great picnic spot.”

Khabal took it all in.
“Very nicely done.” he said with a huge smile and light applause, “Did you create this yourself?” he asked then vanished.
Fafye was about to answer when his sudden disappearance startled her.
At the same moment there was a loud thump like a body hitting a wall. Faye would find Khabal about twelve feet away, to her right, laying on the ground with a bloody nose. He was looking at the ceiling as his hand casually reached up and felt his bloody nose then looked casually at his blood smeared fingers and let out a kind of disappointed “Ow…”.
- Khabal
The noise made her spin and seeing him lying there she hurried over and dropped to one knee. “Whoa! What happened?” Faye said, not sure if she should help him sit up or not.
~Faye Calloway, CIO
Khabal sat up with a sheepish grin not hiding his embarrassment. His nose had already stopped bleeding and the line of blood from his nose and over his chin was starting to vanish.
“I got excited and used the step forgetting that all this is actually in a small room.” Khabal explained.
“Ahh,” she said.
He gingerly touched his nose, “That’s going to be tender for a few minutes.”
- Khabal
“You’re bleeding. We should take you to Sickbay,” Faye said firmly. It was protocol, after all. “They can stop a bloody nose pretty quickly though.”
~Faye Calloway, CIO
“It’ll likely be mostly healed by the time we get there but I’ll grant your wish.” Khabal said standing up.
That was an interesting tid bit and Faye filed it away for later.
Khabal was a bit embarrassed at slamming himself carelessly into the wall but the projection was stunning and he had forgotten himself until the wall abruptly reminded him.
“Lead the way?” Khabal said motioning to the exit arch.
- Khabal
Faye looked back over the simulation and then at Khabal. She nodded and headed out.
Walking along Deck 16, Faye found the nearest turbolift and called it. She stepped in when it arrived and waited for him before calling out, “Deck Twelve, Sickbay Two,” she said.
Khabal followed Faye. Even when he was relaxed, his movements were inhumanly smooth, precise, and silent.
Faye eyed him. “Is your rate of healing consistent or dependant on different variables?” She frowned. “If that is something I can ask.” After all, maybe it was a taboo. It would be like her to just stomp through undesired topics without a clue.
~Faye Calloway, CIO
Khabal shrugged casually.
“You can. Between genetic engineering, nanotechnology, bioware, and what might as well be magic, a Quarm’s ability to heal damage is dependent on the amount of damage to be healed. This,” Khabal said indicating his nose, “is just a few minutes, a broken bone could take an hour. More extensive damage takes more time. The rate of healing and support is such that I can survive approximately 20 minutes of hard vacuum, without protection, before any ill effects start presenting. I am nowhere near the most powerful of my kind.”
- Khabal
She studied him as they made their way into Sickbay. “Huh,” was all she said.
Khabal smiled and shrugged sheepishly.
- Khabal
Looking around, Faye’s stormy green eyes hunted for an available medical person.

OOC: A bump for Hjortur who said he’d be catching up soon. :) ~Linds
Green eyes met green eyes as Ben looked across the room. He was standing on the far end of the bay from the entrance, he’d looked up when the door slid open. He wasn’t wearing his white coat, having left it draped over his office chair. Benjamin had his sleeves rolled up and was apparently injecting himself with a hypo as a nurse scanned him with a tricorder. He placed the hypo on a small tray and dismissed the nurse with a few quick words and made his way across to Faye and Khabal with a smile that seemed genuine for him “Good Afternoon” He said giving a nod to Faye and Khabal and opened his mouth to speak then frowned and stepped closer to the alien, human, genetically engineered… well just Khabal. He was still slightly unnerved by Khabal, despite having only met the man once, but that was all forgotten as he leaned in and sniffed “That’s odd” He was only inches from his face and was looking around intensely as if searching for something. Then as if suddenly realising what he was doing Benjamin smiled awkwardly and slowly leaned back, clearing his throat unneccecarily “Well.. uhm” He clasped hands behind his back to curtail the sudden urge to either fidget or hit his own face, he could feel his ears burning “Heh, Hi”
Doctor Grey
CMOFaye just carried on as if nothing had happened. “Khabal and I were on the holodeck when he had a bit of an accident and now has a bleeding nose. Figured we should come by.” She looked to Khabal to explain further, however he was wont to. She wasn’t entirely sure how free he was about sharing details of himself with different people.
~Faye Calloway, CIO
“I stepped into a wall.” Khabal said sheepishly.
Ben blinked at the explanation, perhaps the man didn’t fully understand that a holographic wall was as solid as a real one. Well it didn’t really matter.
There were only a few specks of blood under Khabal’s left nostril by the time they got there. There wasn’t anything else indicating that he’d taken an injury to the face.
“I assured the Commander that I would be okay but she insisted, so I followed. What procedures do you need to follow healer?”
- Khabal
Ben reached into his coat pockets only to realise he wasn’t wearing his coat. Before he could step back, the nurse walked over and handed him a tricorder. The Nurse had an amused smile on his face as he walked away. Ben frowned at the tricorder and shook his head “Apologies, I’m having an… odd day” He flicked the device open and removed the scan wand, hovering it near Khabal’s face “You’re only coming here now?” He asked before the results came in, with just a glance he could see it was a good while since the nose stopped bleeding, it even smelled odd, like there should be more blood than he could see.
Doctor Grey
CMO“We came right away,” Faye assured him. She was watching the interaction with a great deal of curiosity. Khabal could tell her to leave and she would, but the part of her that latched onto puzzles and demanded answers really wanted to stay. Besides making sure he was okay, of course. She also wondered if that meant their picnic meal needed postponement.
~Faye Calloway, CIO
Ben looked up from the scanner and frowned at Faye, no matter how you looked at it Khabal had clearly been healing for a good while. He looked back down, the scan would reveal whatever was going on.
Khabal remained still during the scan, unnaturally so, only his eyes shifted to track movement.
The scan caught the last moments of an apparently natural ability to regenerate boosted by nanite technology. The nanites were reclaiming the last flecks of blood as Doctor Grey watched. The doctor’s scan could also detect metallic elements in the bones, synthetic fibers woven though Khabal’s muscles, and durable compounds in the tendons and cartilage. It could be reasonably assumed, from Khabal’s physiology, that the impact with the wall must have been considerable.
- Khabal
“Huh” Ben said then rolled back the sensor data “Interesting, When I took your first readings a while ago I hadn’t expected this” He said mostly to himself “I’m no Nanotechnology or Bioengineer expert and well I didn’t have a reason to have anyone look deeper, this is interesting.” He looked up absently putting the tricorder onto his suit clip but he still held the scanner wand “How hard did you run into the wall? How did you run into a wall fast enough” He looked at Faye “Shouldn’t the Holodeck have compensated for any speed to soften the blow? It takes a lot to do anything to that nose. Do we need to have someone check the safety protocols?” He didn’t really give her a chance to answer, looking back at Khabal and cocking his head “Just doing some quick maths but you must pick up speed quickly, I’m fairly certain I’d break my knuckles before your nose would even notice.”
Doctor Grey
CMOFaye held up her hands. “Oh, so not my place to say. Let’s just say it wasn’t an issue with the holodeck.” Yep, not her thing to share. It was up to Khabal, but she was curious if he would or not.Faye was still having a hard time understanding him and his personality. He was a conundrum she couldn’t work out.
~Faye Calloway, CIO
Ben’s frown deepened and he turned fully to face Faye and had the look of an incoming rant when Khabal spoke.
“Oh, I see. It was the step. When I use it it forces the moments of perception for all things to synchronize and…”
Khabal seemed to vanish before the doctors eyes and, before Grey could react, Khabal’s voice came from just behind his left shoulder.
“I move between those moments of perception.”
Khabal stepped back in case the Doctor flailed.
“The holodeck couldn’t compensate for my movement because it couldn’t perceive the movement.”
Khabal’s demeanor was one of relaxed amusement.
“If anything it’s a testament to your skills at creating a realistic environment.” he said to Faye.
- Khabal
Faye snorted. “Thanks, but I can’t take credit for this one. Not sure how it happened, but a friend sent the program to me.”
Ben stood still for a good half minute, utterly perplexed. For a moment, he could smell Khabal on both sides of him, he didn’t react as his brain was busy working out the mechanics of how the exact same scents could be in two distinct locations. This short-circuiting ended, and Ben slowly turned around “That was very disconcerting” He looked a little pale “But also interesting, for a moment it was like you were still in front of me.” Ben again leaned close to examine Khabal “I think if you did that a few more times in a row, I might faint” His mind was already thinking of experiments “If I put a neural monitor on me as he… Steps, I wonder if it was overwork. I’ve acclimated my brain to identify people by their scents and ignoring any lingering smells, which means that the same exact scent in two locations is impossible, which overloads my thought process” He was clearly thinking out loud.
Ben blinked as if surprised to see Khabal and leaned back and cleared his throat “Well, uhm, my apologies Mr. Khabal, I just experienced something new. You are, as I suspect you are, fully aware in good health. You have excellent healing capabilities. Frankly speaking, I’d love to run some tests with our Chief Science Officer, but I’m told that running experiments on strangers is rude.” He smiled politely. He reached for the locket around his neck and opened the small vial attached and sniffed once through each nostril “I would respectfully ask that you not… well step around me, I have a rather sensitive nose and apparently whatever you do momentarily breaks my brain” He said it cheerfully as if excited by the fact.
Doctor Grey
CMOKhabal nodded and looked thoughtful for a moment. He had no idea what experiments Grey might want to perform but it sounded intriguing.
“For a small sample of your genetics in exchange I could see doing a few reasonable experiments and I will refrain from using the step unnecessarily around you.” Khabal said to Grey.
Ben cocked his head curiously at the statement. A barter? That was interesting, of course any form of commerce was interesting and it did make sense that Khabal’s people would centre cultural bartering around genetic material. “I’ll keep that in mind.”
Faye couldn’t help but smile. Funny how much her perception of Khabal has changed now that they had had a chance to spend a little time around each other and clear the air. “It’s definitely not something you see everyday.” She understood Grey’s confusion all too well.
She looked at Khabal. “Still up for eating? Not sure if injuries tank your appetite or not.”
~Faye Calloway, CIO
Khabal turned to Faye with a big grin, like a kid being offered his favorite candy.
“Food is one of the many pleasures of the universe that I find delightful. I’d love to accompany you to your…” Khabal struggled with which term these people used, “…cafeteria, galley, feast hall?” he said with a little confusion and maybe a little too much enthusiasm.
Khabal had obviously been to the Parthenon, he worked shifts there serving the people generous enough to let him stick around after his ship had finished repairing itself. He was of the thought that maybe Faye had a different location aboard the ship in mind as he knew the Parthenon wasn’t the only place, beside quarters, where the crew could eat.
- Khabal
Ben gave Faye a nod and walked back to where he had stood at the start, grabbing the vial he’d been using and the nurse arrived to scan him.
Doctor Grey
CMOShe looked at Khabal and shrugged. “Well, we had originally gone to the holodeck because I thought my garden program made a great spot for a meal, picnic-style. We could still do that. You only saw a small piece of it, after all. But I’m also open to other places if you have a preference.” Which for Faye was no small thing given she generally had very set preferences. ‘Going with the flow’ was not her general state of being.
~Faye Calloway, CIO
Khabal shook his head.
“No, it’s good. We can go back, I’ll just have to keep in mind that I can’t use the step to move around the environment.” he replied gesturing Faye to lead the way.
