“What happened?” Liam asked then pursed his lips. His arm cradled an iguana sized lizard with dull plumage along the spine and tail. Scales, as he was affectionately named, seemed very content with his resting spot. His head pulled back to let his hind leg give it a lazy scratch.

“Well?” The CSO persisted in his search for answers.

Before him stood two guilty looking junior officers. They exchanged sheepish glances with each other before the senior of the two spoke up. “I’m sorry, Sir. We didn’t realize he was that strong. He began to whip about his tail and wiggled out of Hamper’s grasp.”

Liam sighed. “I’m guessing that happened when he spotted me?”

Mile nodded remorsefully. “Yes. I think he really likes you.”

The CSO’s gaze turned to his arm, feeling the pins and pricks of sleep edging in. The lizard gave him a smug gleam in his black eye before closing them. His tongue flicked out while he continued to lay there. Liam’s head raised back to his officers. “Is the cleaning finished?”

“Yes,” Mile answered and then reached to pick up the animal. Scales resisted as his claws dug into Liam’s uniform sleeve. While stronger than normal, the material wasn’t designed to resist razor sharp claws. It ripped, exposing his flesh to the points. Small scratches shortly decorated Liam’s arm, but no blood was drawn.

The CSO’s nose wrinkled at the inconvenience before he addressed his Junior officers. “Thank you. Now, put him back into the enclosure and make sure it is sealed. I rather not contact Security for a wild lizard hunt.”

He turned on heel and exited into the corridor. His eyes turned to his ruined sleeve again. There was no extra time to stop by his quarters to change shirts as he quickened his pace. Upon entering the turbo lift, he pressed the button for the level below his. Once it stopped, he stepped off and headed into the sickbay for his check up.

Ben was walking across his Sickbay when Madison entered so he paused and turned to face the older man with a smile then sniffed once. His face turned into one of mild confusion as he looked down and his expression turned from mild confusion to mild concern as he grabbed the man’s arm and did a visual inspection of his arm “The devil happened to your arm?” He leaned close and inhaled briefly then nodded, no smell of blood so whatever happened didn’t pierce Liam’s skin “And why do you smell like…” He hesitated as his mind translated scents into images connecting the unfamiliar scent to something familiar “Lizard?” He looked up still holding the senior officer’s hand

Liam didn’t resist when the Doctor took his arm and looked it over. He knew an explanation was in order causing him to answer promptly. “That would be Scales. He’s a reptilian specimen and decided to escape two Junior officers’ care. He crawled up my arm and used my hands for a basking rock. He didn’t want to let go immediately. I apologize, but I didn’t have time to clean up before the appointment.”

Eyeing the minor damage, he then added. “Besides, wounds usually heal over after I feed LB.”

Ben frowned “I better not hear such nonsense next time you get an injury, that mentality can make it easier for you to excuse minor injuries which can lead to ignoring major injuries so that if you are ever parted with LB it’ll take years to get used to non-instantaneous healing” Ben didn’t look at the Science chief as he fussed over his arm making certain that he wasn’t truly injured before finally letting go and stepping back. “Anyway, please get on the bed.”

“I can’t argue with the logic, but it’s harder to see a time when that happens. There will likely be side effects even with the full removal.” Liam commented as he let the doc finish up. After his arm was freed, the man moved to the bed. He hopped on backwards and laid down for the routine examination. It was a repetitive routine he appreciated since it was predictable.
