Faye sat back and tapped her fingers on the table in the Briefing Room. The logistics of Project Bastion were coming together and Faye felt confident they could start soon. “I’m still worried about the power draw across the lower third of the ship. The Mythology-class is just that bit bigger than the Manhattan, and has a lot more facilities, including a third Sickbay down there. If we have an issue, it will cascade to the middle and affect a crap-ton of stuff, including Security and the Brig. I and the team can code around the issue, but the hardware and software still have to play nice.” It might seem like she was seeing problems everywhere, but Faye was loving that there were others to troubleshoot all this stuff with. On the Manhattan she had been forced to do most of it herself under conditions that were hardly ideal, and distressing.

Shock was sitting diagonally across from Ms Calloway. He listened carefully, nodding in agreement. Energy was not his field of expertise, and was waiting for Mr Hammor to chip in. For some reason, it was comforting (not that Shock would admit to that emotion under his stern poker face) that there was one other non-human in the room.

He glanced at Mr Hammor.

– Lt Shock (COS)

Hammor was reviewing specs and was silent a moment. He then said “Mythology-class may be bigger in area, but the Manhattan has a lot more power generation than we do. Buy the amount of power isn’t the issue. Like you said, it’s keeping the draw steady and not pulling from other systems.” He thought for another long moment and then said “What if we did this: Tertiary module housing on Deck thirty-one is empty. We can use that space to setup dedicated power supply for the project only. Keep it isolated power-wise from all other systems from jump; and we can install the power control terminals next to the Secondary Computer Core. That should alleviate any kind of issue with other systems.”

Faye nodded eagerly. “Yeah, I like that. It means we can restrict access easier because we can specify individuals and handle it a bit differently than we do the rest of the systems.”

As they were talking, Faye’s badge sounded. =/\=Commander Calloway? I’ve got an incoming call for you. High priority, standard restrictions.=/\=

Faye’s brows lifted. “Put it through to the briefing room.”

After an affirmative, the main display in the room shifted and there was a woman taking up most of the screen, with very plain brown hair done up in a loose twist at the back of her head. She was older but her exact age was hard to gauge and for a Human she seemed ‘middle-aged’. Foggy blue eyes held a keen intelligence and a fair bit of amusement. She was dressed casually in a black shirt of some kind underneath a black leather jacket. “Howdy, folks. Long time no see,” she said in a chiper tone that seemed to bely the deep fatigue just hovering underneath her jovial mask.

Faye rose from her chair, intense shock running through her body. So much so that she couldn’t even respond.

Daggum stood up and put a large green hand on his wife’s shoulder. “You of all people should know to call before you call, Commander.” he said with a smile. “Glad to see you. I take it your not-so-better half is somewhere close by if you are calling us?” He turned and looked at Shock. “Calloway’s mother. She has been… gone… for some time.” and he turned and looked back at the screen.

Hammor, CE

Shock appreciated Hammor’s contextual cue, nodding in acknowledgement.

“Old habits die hard,” Shara said with a grin. As much as she didn’t want to harm Faye in anyway, this was a good surprise… for once.

Dag’s hand reminded her to breathe and that was a good thing as Faye seemed to have forgotten how to do so for a moment.

Micah leaned in and said =/\= Yeah yeah yeah… relax… I’m here. But someone has to pilot us into the warp lane so we can get home for some R&R! =/\=

Micah Pikelsimer

Seeing Micah there as well, Faye inhaled deeply and broke into a smile, shaking her head. “You both suck. A million times over. But Im also really glad to see your faces.”

Shock unconsciously raised an eyebrow. Thereafter, he immediately became self-conscious and relaxed his facial muscles.

Faye turned to Shock. “Lieutenant Shock, I’d like you to meet my parents: Commander Shara Calloway, Chief Intelligence Officer of the USS Asimov and Micah Picklesimer of Federation Security. Mom, Pops, this is Shock, our Chief of Security.”

“Commander, Agent,” Shock acknowledged the parents with their formal titles, while nodding toward them.

Shara grinned, though there was heaviness in her eyes behind that grin. “It’s a pleasure to meet some of my daughter’s colleagues, Lieutenant. I trust Faye is keeping you on your toes?” She barely restrained a chuckle.

“Peace and long life”, Shock reciprocated the Earth pleasantry with one from his own planet. “Your daughter and I have a constructive collegial relationship. I consider her a colleague from whom I am learning new perspectives.”

– Lt Shock (COS)

Shara grinned. =/\=Well that’s wonderful to hear.=/\=

“You’re back…” Faye all but whispered, though it was just loud enough to carry over the comm.

Her gaze shifted to Faye and she nodded. “Yeah, we’re are. For good this time. I know…” Shara paused and gathered herself, not daring to look at Micah. “I know I promised that before, but this was a different situation. We’ve been promised that it’s done for good now. No more Agent Calloway. She’s locked in a vault and I can just be a starship officer the way I was supposed to be.”

Faye nodded, but whether she was digesting any of this was hard to say.

Shara continued. -=/\=So, in the spirit of surprises, you can imagine Micah and I are… owed. I’ve already cleared it so you don’t even have to ask, but if you want, you two could come meet us at the cabin? Nadine is coming.=/\=

She should have been stunned, but somehow her mother and pops wrangling leave her for and Daggum sounded about right. Faye turned to her husband. “What do you say to a trip to Earth. Not quite Honeymoon Redux, but could be nice for our anniversary?”

~Faye and Shara Calloway, CIOs

Daggum smiled and said “An opportunity to try the famous Pikelsimer moonshine? Count me in.” he said with a laugh.

Hammor, CE

OOC: Pasting Shock back in.
IC:
Shock realised that much was said “between the lines” here. He did not understand much – humans were notorious for not speaking clearly, even in the presence of others who are not accustomed to the inside jargon of the human group in question. Instead, Shock was quiet, sitting straight and staring at the wall. On cue, he would speak, but he would refrain from doing so now.

– Lt Shock (COS)

Faye gestured. “You heard the man,” she told her mother.

Shara grinned. =/\=Alright, pack you bags, Kids. We have everything arranged so expect that info shortly.=/\= She shifted her attention to Shock. ||Lieutenant, nice to meet you.||

The comm went dark and Faye struggled to take a deep breath. Yes, she knew that her and Daggum weren’t alone but that didn’t seem to matter. She bent at the waist, hands braced on her thighs and focused on breathing, even as her mind was going in weird tangents to the point that she could no longer focus on the present moment.

~Faye Calloway, CIO

What did this mean? Shock pondered. Would it mean the sudden absence of Calloway and Hammor? Two department heads at the same time? And for how long?

Noticing Calloway’s reaction, Shock waited before asking questions. Perhaps now the husband would help the wife initially. This was certainly a private affair, one which to Shock reluctantly had become privy.

He looked around the room, trying to find something to rest his gaze upon. Looking at Hammor or Calloway would not be conducive to the situation.

– Lt Shock (COS)

If Alex were here, he’d remind her to gather her information first, and right now she knew very little. All she knew for certain was that her mom and pops were alive and clearly no longer branded traitors. The arrest warrant must be cancelled, but clearly it had all happened very quickly. She stood upright. “There must be some sort of official statement or something, even internally within Intelligence. I need to go look for it. And then I guess pack?” Apparently they were getting R&R!
