Luka listened quietly, periodically closing her eyes and inhaling the scent of the cooking food. “Mmm, that smells really good. Speaking of the food, when will it be ready. Not to seem impatient, of course, but all those spices and cooking meat smells are making me very hungry.” she commented. “Did you ever get to know your father? Or at least meet him?” she asked, tapping her toes on the ground a few times. The comments about the tribe thinking she was possessed, Luka passed by on commenting on.

“Both,” Koraia said as she stirred the spices. Then she reached over for a bowl of tomatoes and began to quickly chop them, dumping them into the pot with a sizzle after each one was cut up. “Long story short, we had mutual friends in Konral’s family and when Dalera got married, we both ended up being there. It was an entirely random meeting but at that point his ship had been transferred to the same fleet as us, so it was only a matter of time before we ran into each other. We’ve actually now worked together, as the Descartes was assigned to the Exploratory Fleet the Athena was lead ship of more recently. So… we’ve been getting to know each other, even though that fleet’s mission is done for now.”

“Speaking of Starfleet, I’d like to know more about this ship if I can. The public records on the Athena in past years are rather scant, I must admit. What kind of a ship is it? What kind of an environment do you foster among the ship and crew? It’s an oddly classified ship for one with so many civilians,” she reflected. “I’ve only met you and the CMO so far, since the CNS seems to be unwell at the moment, but I’m planning to meet each of the senior staff at some point in the near future.”

Ghubari couldn’t help but grin slightly. “Oh, Luka. Are you sure you want to know? Delving into the secret life of the Athena is a precarious matter. Who knows what may lurk in the depths of the darkness,” she said dramatically, but whether she was joking or not was hard to say.

“It seems unfair that you’re doing all this sharing and I’m just sitting here soaking in information about you,” Luka added with a small chuckle. “If you happen to have any burning questions about me, feel free to interrupt my torrent of questions and force me to answer a few.”

“Oh, I assure you, I don’t intend this evening to be one-sided,” Ghubari said seriously, though her eyes held a mischievousness. Dinner will be ready in forty-five minutes. Once this is set to simmer, I’ll pull out something for us to nibble on and then I get to start interrogating you.”

“Well, if I’m going to be here for a while, I thought I should know about the history of the ship where I’m working. If you don’t want to tell me, that’s fine. I understand if that’s something you might not trust me with, as someone you only met this morning,” she smiled slightly, then stood up. “I’m just going to get something to drink. Computer, show doorway,” she stepped over to the holodeck doorway. “Hmm… Computer, make me recipe Luka 241. Make two”

“I didn’t say I wouldn’t tell you, just that it was delicate and sometimes hard to take in fully. I was being humorous about it,” Ghubari said simply as she continued cooking. “Later, at an appropriate time, and if Command clears me to reveal it, then absolutely. You should know the things that might come up. I can think of a couple already that are pertinent.”

A few moments later, the doorway reverted to the simple wooden frame, and Luka was back in her chair. She held in her hands two glasses filled with a deep red liquid. “It’s not made from grapes, so it’s not exactly red wine, but it’s made in a similar process. Plus, I’m quite fond of it,” she placed one glass on the counter and began to sip quietly from the other glass. Made from a juicy berry that fermented similarly to grapes, it did have a similarity to wine, but definitely wasn’t grape wine.

“I’m intrigued,” Koraia said.

“This particular recipe is based on a bottle of Ta’nah berry wine from 2354 I had a few years ago. It’s not a perfect reconstruction, but I think it’s close enough to give a good impression. One of these days I’ll get a shipment of real drinks from Galdor into 17/18 forward’s bar for everyone to taste. The Arwan make some wonderful beers…”

Ghubari grinned. “I’ll have to introduce you to mbege, it’s a beer made from bananas that originated from group to the north of the area I grew up. It’s quite popular all over and it’s made at special occasions. I’ve, uh, had some bad experiences with it in the past, but am keen these days to get reacquainted.” She was a long way from the crazy drink and high trip down memory lane that had revealed the telepathic loop lodged in her mind that had informed her nerve pain for so long. While the process had worked to reveal the issue, it had caused havoc on her life and her relationships in the days afterwards. Thank the Ancestors for Konral’s determination. If he hadn’t put his foot down, they never would have gotten back together and eventually got married.

“What a food, you’d especially want to introduce to me?” Koraia asked, as she added some broth to the concoction and put a lid on to let it simmer for a bit. Reaching for the drink, she inhaled its scent first and then took a tiny sip, letting it sit in her mouth before swallowing. Then she took another more generous sip to fully taste the wine. “This is good. I like the sweetness. It’s not overpowering, and it’s quite full tasting.”
