<snip>“Lieutenant Marisol Delgado. She was slated to go on the Delta quadrant outbound flight mission before it got scrapped. She expected it to be a one-way trip. Was actually going to be security chief for the run, though it was only on a Sunlight-class fast frigate. I think there’s plans to send something more substantial out. I took her in after that. Smart, tough, strong-willed. She really didn’t seem to have much holding her from leaving. The way she tells it anyway. Family problems. And maybe she had a little bit of a chip on her shoulder.” She sighed. “It took a while to get her to open up, and maybe find a better path forward. Stop running away. She would, of course, protest that she was running to something. But it seems like she was seeing more of the truth. I’d like to think some of my mentoring helped. And a good counselor helped a lot too.” She shrugged and took another long drink. Too many good people left behind she was going to miss.

Meadows listened intently as she spoke. She had fondness for her old crew that seemed to have been cut off a bit too quickly. “I know it’s probably hard leaving good people behind. Its never easy. But I’m sure in time we may grow on you.” He paused before mildly changing the subject. “So, what sort of things do you like to do? Outside of the job that is.”
It was rough being the new officer. He was enjoying their time though. It was perhaps different than how things normally went, but…such was command on the Athena.

She thought it over for a moment. “Back home I was always outdoors. I spent a lot of time hiking in the foothills and in the woods. Or riding horses. We had a garden for growing our own food. I like to get back to all that when I can.” Serena paused long enough to take a sip of something less alcoholic. “Pretty ironic for someone who spends all their time in a floating metal can, I suppose.” She gave the lieutenant a wry but brief smile.
Meadows smiled. “Perhaps, but understandable nonetheless.”
“Rock climbing does it for me too. At least when I have some holodeck time. Other than that, I tend to watch a lot of video content. I suppose a solid workout routine counts as fun sometimes too. A good spar helps, but so does a good run or time with some weights.”
She shrugged one shoulder. “I read a lot too. Anything that gets me out of my head, lets me relax, or blow off stress and steam. Music helps too,” she admitted. Her face heated with a blush, but she mentally waved it away. There was nothing wrong with any of that. Though she supposed it made her sound a bit like a hermit.

Meadows lightly chuckled. “Quite the slew of hobbies! Reading and music is great, though I think I end up doing more rigorous type of stuff. You know if you ever need a sparring partner let me know. I also really enjoy rock climbing, but you don’t necessarily need a partner for it. Its a really good idea to have one, but…its possible to go without. And as for gardening, it may take your fancy to check out our arboretum. It really is beautiful. Not like home, but worth the visit every now and then.”
“I’ve done a little rock climbing. Definitely requires focus. Might be worth taking up.” She shrugged one shoulder. “And it would be nice to have a sparring partner at least.”
He nodded with a grin and a sense of sincerity. “You know, I think you’ll fit in quite well. I’m glad they sent you here.” He then took a sip of his drink.

“Thanks,” she murmured, her voice just barely reaching him over the din of the crowd and the deep thrum of the ship. Reaching out she sipped at some water. “I…” She broke off with a small sigh, her shoulders drooping a bit. “She’s a lovely ship, and everyone has been very kind, warm, and welcoming.” idly, she fidgeted with the glass between her hand, staring into it’s depths. “It’s nice. Everyone seems very comfortable here. And that’s, I suppose, good for morale.”
“But… it’s almost a different culture, compared to what I’m used to. It’s bugging me.” She considered for a moment, falling into a wince. “It’s not something I want to change, because it’s clearly working. I’m not here to rock the boat. Make life miserable. I just… this ship feels very soft.”
Serena shook her head. “And I shouldn’t be dumping this on a subordinate. That’s a bad sign.” Already a breakdown in the chain of command and military bearing. Great. She paused long enough to take a swig of her water. “At the same time, everybody assures me this crew is squared away, and has had it’s butt rocked aplenty. They are all competent, I will say that much. At least that I’ve observed so far. So maybe that’s true. And maybe it’s something I have to reconcile. Adapt.”
“I mean, there’s a lot of adapting I have to do,” she said with a half laugh. “Speaking of, I’ve got stuff I will need to iron out with Command soon. But not right now.” She slapped the top of the table just lightly enough to make a quiet pop.
“Okay, enough wallowing. I haven’t eaten since … this morning. Any recs?”
