Faye wore an open expression, even as her brain continued along its very complicated set of thoughts. “I don’t know what you are, just like you don’t know much about me. In my experience making assumptions tends to led to miscommunication and issues between people. I’m not always good at interpreting someone’s words, so I thought I would check. I didn’t mean to cause offence.”

Marishka thought it was interesting the way people interpreted each other’s energies.

“I think I am very glad that nobody at this table is a diplomat.” she said trying to lighten the mood.

  • Marishka

Khabal shook his head gently.

“You didn’t cause offense, I was just letting a little more of myself show. Sorry if I gave you the wrong impression. As to what I am… That’s simple and complicated at the same time.”

  • Khabal

Marsihka couldn’t help but laugh.

“I couldn’t help but notice that the best things, and people, usually are… Simple and complicated I mean.”

  • Marishka

Faye couldn’t help but snort. “I am just complicated. I think that’s why I’m usually so divisive. Most often people tend to be fine with me, or really dislike me. It’s rarely neutral.” This was one of those times where Faye wished she had a drink in hand (and preferably a strong one), but as she had for awhile now, Faye let that temptation pass without more than a brief internal acknowledgement.

“I’m not going to push where I’m not wanted, but if you’re okay with it, can you explain more about being a Quarm?” Faye was just trying to suss out some basics. The fact that she didn’t know the name off the top of her head told her a great deal already. It wasn’t that she thought she knew all about everything, but between her memory and varied experience, there was a lot she did know, if passively.

“Sure.” Khabal smiled and spoke as any person would in matters of business, “Basically, starting at age three, Quarm are genetically engineered and redesigned with bioware, cybernetics, nanotech, and RNA training for thirteen years to be the perfect killers. Trained in the myriad ways of death and it’s various applications. The creed only allows the Quarm to administer the final moment under contract, in defense, or as an act of mercy.”

Khabal took another substantial drink of the Kanar.

Faye’s expression was neutral as she took in this information. “Is this all Quarm, or are specific individuals selected?” Oh, there were so many more questions, but Calloway wasn’t sure how much would be too much. Khabal acted like this was just a natural interaction, and it probably was for him. Did he understand how or why it might be alarming here on this ship?

~Faye Calloway, CIO

Marishka had heard this part of the introduction before and was still toying with the idea of requesting Khabal be under contract when he left the Athena. Was she ready to let that dark part of her heart loose again? It would certainly solve several problems at once.

“Correct me if I’m wrong, Spiral Nomads identify themselves by profession rather than race or species? All Quarm are assassins, all doctors are healers, etcetera.”

  • Marishka

Khabal smiled warmly.

“Well done. That’s exactly how it is because of the multiple cross species genetic recombination. I started as human but now I’m very far from that base genetic stock.”
