It was time for the regular check-ups on Shock’s staff. He would speak to each of them on a one-to-one basis to discuss how they’re getting on with their work, what issues they might face, and how he can be supportive in their security-skills development. He had also planned to tell Ducante something that Ducante might take as a surprise.

His next meeting was the 15:00 one with Lt Ducante. One minute to go…

Shock sat in his office and waited. Would Ducante be on time?

Lt. Ducante wrapped up his reports and all the data on his padd for the duty day and transferred it to the main console. He was impatient with the computer as he had a meeting with Lt Shock and did not want any excuses on why he was late, but his impatience did not cause any errors in his work. He stepped away from his console, Padd back in hand, and strode to Lt Shock’s office door with thirty seconds to spare as the door chimed Lt. Shock of his approximitity to the door. He breathed a sigh of relief and waited for Lt Shock to acknowledge his arrival.

As Shock heard the door chime, he looked at the time, and saw that it was 28 seconds to three. He’s early, Shock thought to himself. Since he was all prepared for the meeting, he called “Enter”. As he saw Owen Hunter in the doorway, Shock rose to his feet.

“Hello Mr Ducante, please have a seat.”

“The agenda for this meeting is to discuss your progress on the Athena, how you have experienced your tenure here so far, what things have been beneficial, and what things you would have had different. I am eager to understand your experience, and how I might help you in developing your skills as a Starfleet officer and a security officer. Now, Mr Ducante, where would you like to begin?”

“I’ve enjoyed my time here. Helping and teaching Ensign Kleine, learning the differences between this ship and the Chimera. You have been a great help to both of us when we have needed it.” Lt Ducante stated after a moment of thought on where to begin. “I don’t believe there is anything as of yet I would do different. The way the team flows together is perfect for the protection of ship and each other.” He continued.

“It is agreeable to hear this. I understand you have been interested in exploring tactical duties more, too. Is that a fair assessment?”

– Lt Shock

“Yes, Sir. I see that we have a vacant Tactical Officer position available, and I was contemplating that post. Shouldn’t be that much harder than being Chief of Security. Some ships consider them the same post, I’ve seen.” Lt. Ducante responded.

Shock decided not to comment on Ducante’s off-hand comment about tactical duties shouldn’t be much harder than being chief of security. While Ducante had been chief of security on the Chimera,. Ducante was not chief of security now. Was Ducante displeased with that shift of roles, that while he, having had experience as chief, was overlooked for Shock – who had no experience of being chief of security, becoming Ducante’s superior officer. Perhaps it was difficult, perhaps Ducante had felt slighted, offended by this turn of events. If so, he had hid it well from Shock, he had always been polite and respectful and mindful of Shock’s superior position.

“Indeed, there is no chief tactical officer. Security staff fill the tactical roles on Bridge whenever needed, under mine, the first officer’s and the captain’s ultimate instruction. Vacancies are dealt by the captain and the first officer. I will speak to them. If I interpret you correctly, you are more interested in tactical duties than security duties. You also aspire to be promoted to chief tactical officer. Please confirm or negate on both points.”

– Lt Shock (chief of security)

“I’m interested in that position. On the Chimera we didn’t have a tactical post, we only had a security team, as we are doing at the moment here.” He explained trying to define what he said as to not sound like he was jealous of Lt Shock, or his chief of security position. It was more or less, he saw an opportunity to assist the ship in a way he has experience.
“So I slightly have the experience for the position and feel it would be a good goal to advance in my career. I believe in the philosophy to never stop learning. You stop learning, you stop growing, and growing and expanding our knowledge is not just a basic fundamental of humans, but it is what I feel Starfleet originally set out to do, grow and expand our understanding of our universe” he stated.
