Daggum watched her intently as she spoke, and he could feel her anxiety. He took her hand and held it tight and said “Maybe a better idea… we tell Paul, who we both know we can trust and who isn’t problematic for either one… and ask him to play the role of middle-man. No direct contact… no direct communication. Paul fields things both ways. And he is also on site, so he will have a good perspective on what is happening. I mean, its a lot to ask of him… but I know he will do it.”

“Hey, he came all the way to the Delta Quadrant for a wedding, I think the man expects being in our lives is somehow going to involve dramatics of some kind.”

Faye lowered herself to the sofa, setting Tess in her lap, who by now was purring. She still had her other hand in Dag’s. “I guess a part of me always assumed or hoped that buying a copy of my dad’s favourite book off Kodell meant that we would be done. The ties severed.” She gave Daggum a lopsided smirk. “Wishful thinking.”

Hee squeezed the hand and said “Wishes come true, sometimes.” and he leaned in and kissed her softly on the lips. “I know mine did…” he whispered and then kissed her again.

Faye smiled beneath the kiss and let herself be lost within it for a moment. Tess decided she was so not into this and slipped out from Faye’s lap, leaving the couple alone.

Pulling back she exhaled a sigh. “Call Paul and see what he says. He’s used to working with Kodell, so I suspect he’ll know how to handle it.”

Daggum kissed her again and said “Later… this far more important…” and he kissed her again and didn’t stop for more conversation.

It was a couple of hours later when Daggum sat down at the comms terminal. He punched in the code and waited for a few moments, and then the screen came to life.

Paul looked good, all things being equal. He smiled when he saw Daggum and said “My main man! How are things shakin’? How’s married life?” Daggum smiled and said “Couldn’t be happier, brother. How are things?” Paul nodded and said “We’re coming along! Outside refurb is done. And we have had about a dozen applicants for the program. Vetted, tested, and they are now here working with the crews. One even landed a real job. Ran into some ‘inspector’ issues, but the partner cleared that up.” Paul strive to never say the name of their partner, even though he and Kodell got along alright. Daggum nodded and said “Good. It’s uh… its actually him and you I’m calling about. Not project related. So… let me just start from the beginning.” and Daggum went through the entire call from his ‘mother’, the information gleaned on her background, and her connections. Paul listened intently and before Daggum could even ask, he said “Ok. This is what we’re gonna do. Me and K will deal with this here on Orion. You deal with Federation lawyers. Between the two sides, we can put this chick in a vice-grip of legality the likes of which would make a Syndicate lawyer wince.” Daggum laughed and said “Well, that was kinda the plan, but we were going to ask you. And hey… we aren’t super comfortable having him so involved in our personal al stuff. Think you can be the intermediary in this?” Paul simply nodded once and said “Of course. Don’t even sweat that. I got you. BOTH of you. THAT MEANS YOU TOO, FAYE!!!” he yelled.

Daggum smiled and said “Thanks, Paul. You are a good friend.” Paul waved off the compliment and said “We’re family… thats what family does. We’ll talk soon. Send me all the stuff you got on this and we’ll get right on it.” Daggum nodded and said “Sent. Thanks again.” Paul nodded and the screen went dark. Daggum exhaled slowly and looked at Faye. “Well… thats done.”
