One of the many ways in which Faye needed to settle into life on the Athena was twofold: she needed to get to know the social space on the ship so she could understand how people chose to interact, and she had to suss out certain variables.

Stepping into 17/18 Forward, known as The Parthenon, Faye immediately got the reference. It was a fun nod to the ship’s name, all told. The CIO was in uniform, with her dark brown hair twisted up in a simple knot, rather than the ponytails she had preferred before. Moving silently to the bar, she slipped up onto a stool and folded her arms across the bartop, happy to just observe people working for the moment, as well as the people moving about her. The person she wanted to see would show up eventually. It was her bar, after all.

No-one needed to tell Marishka that the new CIO had stepped into The Parthenon. The previous CIO himself had helped her outfit the whole place with state of the art security. Out of respect for Faye she didn’t keep her waiting too terribly long. If it were anybody else other than, perhaps, the Captain, they might have waited 10 to 15 minutes but, it was a scant 5 minutes later when Marishka glided silently onto a barstool next to Faye.

Calloway’s fingers were tapping to the beat of the music. Someone had good taste.

“You will forgive me, I still expect to see a striking Caitian in your uniform.”

Faye turned her stormy grey-green eyes on Marishka and smiled. “I was saddened to not be working with him myself. He was… unusually understanding.”

She looked about the bar section and then back the hostess. “I hope you don’t take it as a slight that it took me this long to come by. Social settings aren’t usually my thing, and it’s been rather busy since I got here.”

“Well perhaps I could have come to your office with a plate of cookies as a welcome but, I’m busy running this place. Welcome wagon isn’t quite in my job description yet.”

Faye snorted.

Marishka smiled, looked Faye in the eyes, and gave her a very subtle wink. Her comment was meant to be light and friendly. She didn’t want to start on the wrong foot with the new CIO no matter what their relationship ended up being.

Calloway gave a lopsided grin. “I’ll try not to be offended.” Sure, some days she had a hard time reading people, but Marishka seemed to understand that the confirmation would help.

“Well, we’re here now and that’s what counts. How can I help you Ms. Faye?”

“Just… getting the lay of the land, as it were. I’m used to people getting twitchy just from seeing the uniform, but there’s some extra twitchiness going on here that seems unrelated to my field in general. I’m really a scientist by training, you know. The rest is just useful to certain people and so we have an uneasy truce.” No, it wouldn’t be her first choice but it was the path she was on.

She turned more to gaze at Marishka, reconciling that her and Dag had had different experiences. “Stark was kind enough to not leave me to figure out everything on my own,” Faye said.

Before Marishka could speak, one of her staff set down a large platter with hors d’oeuvres from several species. There was sweet, spicy, and what could only be described as strange.

“Can I get you ladies anything to drink?” the server asked.

Marishka shook her head and just motioned for a refill of the coffee cup she had arrived with before turning back to Faye.

“I have a feeling that Stark would do his best to keep you in the loop and, as for extra twitchiness, that doesn’t really surprise me.”
