He grinned broadly. “I see myself fitting in quite well! So many people to know. I’m told this ship is full of ‘intriguing’ people?”

Janna couldn’t help but laugh. “Well, that just might be a severe understatement there Dawson, but yes, you’re correct. We have a lot of individuals with unusual backgrounds and experiences and we all come together to form a rather dynamic team. I think you’ll find the Athena uncommonly prepared for the unusual that is tossed our way.”

“Any concerns you’re navigating?” Janna said.

Dawson considered her question for a moment. “Do you mean personally or professionally?” he asked curiously.

Ever evasive. Janna supposed she was used to it and somewhat expected it, but she had hoped she had earned a modicum of trust. Maybe that feeling was superficial though, since he was good at hiding himself after all. “Does that distinction matter to you?”

“Absolutely!” he said with a broad grin, curious to how she might respond to that. Was he having a bit too much fun at a counselor’s psychological evaluation? Perhaps, but he didn’t mind at all.

“Then by all means, tell me both if they do in fact apply,” Janna said lightly. His amusement at her expense was not lost on her and she could play games as well as anyone else. To a point. She wasn’t a glutton for punishment and she would not have her time wasted. Still, for many reasons, it felt vital that she try to understand this man.

Dawson kept his smiling gaze on her as he sensed patience beginning to wear thin. He obliged and leaned forward with some perhaps more seriousness in his voice. “Professionally, I’m caught with obeying the whims of starfleet despite having been retired. Sure I’ve got quite a bit of freedom, but I’m not without limits. Makes the job harder to understand who to obey. Not impossible as I typically weigh my options carefully, but it does add some stress to my life. Then there’s personally. I’m at a point in my life where I need to force a confrontation with an old friend. I don’t want to, but I know it’s coming. Only way to mend is the way I see it.”

“Sometimes we have to risk breaking things in order to mend them,” Janna said. “Do you expect a particular outcome from this confrontation, or might this friend surprise you?” As always she could only go down one thread at a time, circling back where needed. But Janna also trusted her instincts and them guide where to take the conversation next.

“Truer words have never been spoken,” he replied to her. “I don’t have high expectations, only high hopes. Safer that way sometimes, don’t you think?” Dawson added, curious on her own take.

“It depends,” Janna said. “It might be safer and prevent disappointment, but sometimes we need a bit of disappointment in order to know how we truly feel about a situation. It’s in the pain that we find the most growth.” She kept her gaze even with his.

“Also true! Without pain there is no growth. And that’s why this convergence is a must. Stagnation is not ideal. So either I force a confrontation, let the cards fall where they may, and move on by. Or let it stagnate and sit causing us some unnecessary uncomfortable meetings in the future. I choose to get the pain done with.” he said, his eyes still curiously analyzing her as well. Truth be told, she was getting deeper into who he was whether he liked it or not.
