Janna laughed loudly in the quiet corridor of a ship at nighttime and immediately slapped a hand over her mouth, giggling beneath her fingers. “My fun is an acquired taste because it involved forcing people to be creative,” she said, thinking back to her introducing him to her ‘people watching’ past time, which really became ‘make up stories about the people you see’. She actually hadn’t really played the game with anyone else before, mostly because no one had seemed interested.

Steeping into a lift, she called out, “Deck Four.” Kingston leaned against the wall of the lift and smirked at him. “I lied. I do have one other hobby, but it’s not an active one. Not something I can practice. We’ll have to find something I can do.”

Daggum looked at her quizzically and said “Okay… want to tell me what this secret, inactive hobby of yours is? Unless it involves dissecting dead things. Then you would be ‘not boring’ in an entirely new way.” and he chuckled.

Daggum

“I’ll show you,” Janna said with a grin.

Stepping out on the next deck, Janna was at least not so drunk that she couldn’t find her quarters, though a couple times she had had to slow down her pace lest she trip over her own feet. She unlocked her quarters and stepped in, expecting Daggum to follow.

A standard issue grey sofa rested near the windows with a handmade quilt in dark blues, burgundies and soft greens was draped over the back. Beside it on a wooden table was a trio of pillar candles that had been clearly used. An empty mug from earlier sat rather on her metal and glass coffee table.

Her quarters were her refuge and few had ever been here. So visitors who were used to the clinician might be surprised how much effort she had put into her space given how little time she actually spent there.

Soft rugs in cream tones overlaid the standard grey carpet and were spread in places where you stood for any length of time or got up from a place. There was a desk in the work area that had a soft throw draped over the back of the task chair with trailing plants hanging down either side of the upper shelf of the desk, lit (during the day) by grow lights. A tall shelf between the work and living space held some knick knacks and photos: Her and her moms at her Academy graduation, her moms on one of their anniversaries, her and a couple friends from the Hypatia. The knick knacks were all small vases of some kinds. Clear glass, ceramic, hand painted porcelain. There didn’t seem to be a particular theme other than they were vessels to hold flowers and all look handmade.

Janna moved over and pointed to the shelf of vases. “You collect comic books, I collect vases. I try to get one from every new place, especially anywhere that has a different style or method.”

Daggum took in the room and nodded. It suited her. “I like it. Very homey. So do you only collect from where you’ve been? Or do you pick up new ones from markets and vendors, too?”

Daggum

“More like I buy them directly from the artisan that made them. So wherever I find the artists is fair game.” Janna held up her index finger. “But I have rules about it. It has to be from a place I’ve been, and I can’t buy one from the same person or from the same place twice. I might make exceptions for an extraordinary circumstance, but it’s meant to be tied to memories. The vases tell the story of where I’ve been.”

Kingston shrugged. “But like I said, it’s not an active hobby. It’s not something I can sprinkle into my week.”

Daggum looked at her and said “Ever thought about making your own?”

Daggum

She blinked, looked at the vases and then back at Daggum. “Huh. You now what? Strangely enough I haven’t. Pottery could be interesting. It’s kinaesthetic, non-risky, messy.” Janna grinned. “Sounds actually kind of fun. Know anyone who knows how anything about clay?” Clay was the obvious mode of vase making given she wasn’t about to work with melting glass.

Daggum shrugged and said “Not personally… but give me a few days and I bet I can get you a good holodeck program to help you learn the basics.” He took another quick look around and then nodded before looking back at her. “Now then… go to bed and lay down before you fall down. I’m gonna go, but I’ll let you know when. I find the program, ok? Oh… and drink a big glass of water and take some aspirin before you pass out. Your hangover will thank you.”

Daggum

Janna laughed and waved her hand. “I’m fiine she said, even as the motion of her hand made her wobble a little bit and then giggle. She pressed a finger to her lips and winked.

“Good night, Daggum.”
