Janna gave herself a moment to really consider her answer and inhaled deeply. “It could mean a lot of things. We’ve only just met so I don’t know you all that well just yet. But if I were to hazard a guess based on my observations and our discussion thus far I would say it’s because that event is a defining moment for you. It means something deeper than you originally thought. Until you figure it out, for better or worse, you won’t be able to move past it. Acceptance is the path forward, but acceptance of what is the question only you can answer. But… that I can help you explore further, if you like.”

Shock’s mind stopped and focused on the situation as a “defining moment” to him. It made perfectly sense, the logic was abundantly clear. It was all true.

“It certainly was defining,” Shock said, agreeing with Kingston’s theory. “It was the first and only time that I had been physically intimate with anyone. I could theorize now, after discussing the event with you to great detail, that that has left a mark upon my character and person. Acts of sexuality are defining to all binary species, and most humanoids have entire cultures and sets of rules and taboos related to sexuality because of that, my culture included. It makes perfect sense that that is at the core of my problem.” Shock spoke faster, with more animation than before.

It was as if Kingston had unlocked a truth in him. He suddenly felt a jolt of excitement inside of him – which he quickly purged – but had he been human, he might have described it as “fun”. He was now in full science mode, looking at himself like a scientist would, with variables being manipulated and their interactions analysed.

“But it’s more than that, Shock,” she cautioned.

Janna leaned forward slightly. “You had this experience and it was suddenly over. And you regret how it ended, how you handled the situation. You’ve stumbled upon something about yourself that also needs some consideration. It’s not about taking a flaw and rehashing it over and over, but acknowledging that we are capable of less than ideal behaviour. And it’s about knowing that you want something in the future to be different as well.”

“Yes…” he said, agreeing with her assessment. It was strange how well she read into him.

The thumb and index finger of his right hand moved up to his chin, pinched it slightly. He would often do that instinctively whenever he was deep in thought. He often tried to hide it, because to him, it was un-Vulcan. Instincts were to be overcome, not acted on.

Here, he felt safe and secure. He didn’t have to act particularly Vulcan here. He could be himself. He was Vulcan, but he was also himself – Shock.

“What I want of the future to be different…?” he asked himself out loud. “I am not sure how to even begin assessing what variables could be different.”

Kingston smiled warmly. “Good thing we don’t need to figure that out today. It’s a process. And you’re still getting settled in here, so why don’t we end this for now and meet again in a week?”

“I want you to take time to not only go over the things we’ve talked about, but also give yourself a chance to get to know the ship and its crew.”
