Ten minutes later they beamed aboard the yacht. Hamkor looked at her and said “Go take a break. Ill make arrangements for dinner and we’ll get under way.” He kissed her cheek and then patted her somewhere lower than her waist and moved towards the bridge.

For a moment Faye just stood there, then she set off for their suite. Inside, she pulled out the cloth covered book and set the bag on the coffee table. Tess was instantly weaving around her legs and still feeling on edge, Faye had little patience for it. “Tess, no,” she said, stepping over the cat carefully and plopping herself down on the couch. Tess instantly jumped up and tried to snuggle with her person, but Faye simply set her on the floor. Rinse, repeat.

“Tess, stop it! Let me be!”

Tess eyed Faye intently, her ears pulled back slightly. Remorse swept through Faye instantly but she wasn’t sure she could handle Tess’ persistence right now. But yelling at her cat wasn’t exactly high on the ‘good behaviours’ list.

The unease was still there, though she had to admit to feeling mildly better after throwing up. Which reminded her… Faye went and brushed her teeth.

Back on the safe, Faye pulled off her boots and rested her feet on the edge of the table, resting the protected book in her lap. She could recite the entire book by now without having to open it and look. The point wasn’t to read the antique though. It was to carry something tangible of her father through her life, something she could not just tell others about, but show them, so they could understand more precisely who Edward Calloway had been. At least to her. And the more she thought about it, the more purchasing the book from Kodell felt right. She was honest about not wanting ties to him, to that house, any longer.

But Daggum’s reminder that he had had to endure Kodell struck her weirdly and she still wasn’t sure why. Perhaps it was because Faye had had so few paramours over her life that two meeting each other had infinitesimal odds. But they had sought out the opportunity, tossed themselves in it. They had no one to blame but themselves. Yes, they were both seeking closure, but suddenly it didn’t seem as simple as waltzing in to their old lives and declaring themselves done with it. It was, in any case, going to take more than a little processing.

About a half-hour later, the door slid open and Daggum came in. Tess meowed incessantly at him and darted back and forth between him and Faye. Daggum scratched her head and took a seat next to Faye. “Your cat is such a snitch.” and he looked at her. “How’s the decompression coming?”

Daggum

A snort erupted from Faye where she still was on the couch. She hadn’t moved from the couch, though she knew she’d need to do some yoga later. Faye looked up and sighed. “I yelled at Tess. That’s how it’s going.” She shrugged. “It’s just a lot to process, Dag. A part of me just wants to be done with it all, and I will in a way. But right now I’m not okay and Tess knows it and is pissed at me.” The thought of the feline’s irritation made her smirk a tiny bit. It was kind of funny.

Daggum softly snorted. “She’s pissed at you because you won’t let her help, and that’s what she’s here to do. Imagine how mad you’d be if I just walked in the door and said ‘Faye, you can’t work.’. You’d lose your shit. So let her on your lap and let her do her thing.”

Daggum reclined and stretched his arms out across the back of the couch and laid his head back to stare at the ceiling. “Yeah… big day for sure.” he said. He was quiet for a couple of minutes, and then said “So I called Kodell.”
