With his new quarters all set up and some housekeeping things out of the way, Noah figured that it was time to get down to work. The last thing on his checklist was to meet the new boss and get physically cleared for duty. Handily all of those things were in the same place. He made his way down to Deck 12 and stepped through the doors. Inside he took in the sights and sounds of the state-of-the-art medical facility. He loved the hum of the biobeds and sensors and even the bright lights. This was going to be his new hangout spot for the next little while and he couldn’t wait to become acquainted with everything. Several nurses were going about there business with the usual tasks needed to keep a sickbay going on a starship this size and he managed to catch one of their eyes.

“Hello there, I’m Ensign… well, Doctor Astor reporting for duty. Is the CMO available? I’m hoping to check in and get my boarding physical completed.”

(BUMP)

The nurse who Astor stopped smiled “Yes, please have a seat and he’ll be with you shortly” She indicated to a nearby biobed and walked away.

Only a few moments later a tall thin man in a white coat walked up to Astor, hands in the coat pockets. He smiled politely “Ensign, I’m Benjamin Grey, I run the medical department.” Benjamin was in his thirties, with broad shoulders, dark hair, and very green eyes. He inhaled sharply through his nose and nodded to himself “I like to do the boarding physical and interview at the same time if you don’t mind” He spoke with a light Scottish accent.

Dr. Grey - CMO

Noah stood and returned the smile, “Hello sir, I’m Dr. Noah Astor. I don’t mind getting both done at the same time, I am definitely ready to get through all the paperwork and get busy around here.” He gestured to sickbay with his last comment and then hopped back up on the biobed, ready for his exam.

BUMP

Benjamin nodded “Alright then lets start with the basics” He grabbed a Teri order from his coat pocket, removed the scanner wand and began the exam “Have you had any medical incidents since your last examination?” He asked.

Dr. Grey - CMO

Noah shook his head. “No, sir, I’ve actually been fairly healthy. No injuries or illness since my last exam. My weight has stayed consistent and I feel pretty good.”

Benjamin nodded as he continued the scan “Why did you become a Doctor?” He asked “And why Starfleet?” He added.

Dr. Grey - CMO

“Actually, my parents asked me the very same thing,” Noah replied with a soft chuckle. “Their plan for me was always to join the family business and take up deep sea and river fishing but I never really felt the same call to the water as the rest of my family. My mind was always searching for other things and I loved the local library so I would just find a place and read about all these adventures other people were having while I was stuck in my small little town.”

He thought back to some of his favorite places: the Column, the Cathedral Tree, one of the several coffee shops downtown. It was at one of those coffee shops that he had met Dr. Miller, an old Starfleet officer who had retired after being injured in the Dominion War. Fond memories flooded back about all the stories he had told him.

“There was this old medical officer that lived in town,” he continued. “We struck up a conversation over 2001: A Space Odyssey. He started telling me about all of his missions and what is was like to visit other worlds and meet other species. To me, that sounded like a lot more fun than smelling like fish all day. Dr. Miller helped me with my Academy entrance exams and the medical part just sort of fell into place naturally through the lens of his stories. And now, here I am.”
