He sighed and it came from him in a rush, part of relief and part of pensive stress “The Rift exists in the Mirrorverse as well, as do the Swords tasked with healing it and the Mirror version of Skotos is calling to me from the ruins of that universe’s Guardian of Forever.” His voice was quiet, factual but filled with a sense of longing, finally he finished speaking almost plaintively “I want to go…”

Her mouth opened slightly as if she was about to say something and her brow furrowed deeper. “I understand this need, but my first response is to say no. It’s dangerous and you are a Starfleet officer, Stark. You can’t just leap off to alternate Universes on a whim.” She was sounding frustrated and she knew it but it couldn’t be helped. “We need you here. Doesn’t that mean something?” She was thinking of Laraan too. Why was it so early into his marriage that he was willing to go running away to other places? She understood him better than almost anyone, because he was a lot like her, so she could these questions knowing the place from which he had given his request.

He nodded soberly. “It does mean something” he said simply “but I also have a deep seated conviction beyond anything I can explain that leads me to believe that by doing it I would be protecting you all as well.” He smiled briefly “Besides, I wasn’t planning to go alone, If I could find a way I’d bring you all with me I would…, saving the universes one at a time”.

She snorted and then sighed. Everything always seemed better when the lot of them could jump into the fray together, but it just wasn’t always doable.

He sighed “I was pretty sure you were going to say no, I accepted that even before I asked but I felt I must tell you so that there were no lies or hidden truths between us and also…” he hesitated and then continued “Because I feel that there is a certain inevitability at work here that is going to arrange things in such a way that we will have little choice but to come in line with what is necessary and needed”. He grinned openly then and chuckled “And we both know how much you love surprises that drag you around by the nose, see this as fair warning that somethings coming that neither of us will be able to dodge”.

“I’m jumping for joy,” Ghubari said dryly and shook her head. Gazing out across the lounge, she let her eyes glimpse the stars out the windows. “Kallen was a part of that fight before, but she’s gone… in this universe and the other one. What do you think that will mean?” she said quietly, her voice letting the hint of old grief surface. She imagined it would never feel better until Israel Price faced justice, but that seemed to be something beyond possibility these days.
