Right now the space between them was good, necessary. “Have to? No, I don’t have to. But I also wouldn’t be such a great counsellor if I simply ignored my instincts. I’ll grant you though that that is more complicated between us now. But I don’t see that as a deterrent.”

He gave slight laugh at that.

“You know the Athena is not the Aurora, right? You are not the same man you once were. You’ve lived years upon years since then. Why does this scare you so much?”

“I know it’s not,” he replied truthfully. “But I still allowed it to happen. My species has no home now because of me. Why should I be allowed in command again?” His eyes locked on to hers.

Janna’s gaze never wavered. If there was someone who was comfortable with meeting (and sometimes forcing) gazes, it was her. “And what exactly is a fitting punishment then? Are you not capable of learning from your mistakes?” she said, tilting her head ever so slightly.
