“Coffee would be good, please.” Ros glanced at her and then at the dark blue arm chairs, pointing to one and raising an eyebrow in a quiet, clear query if that was where they were sitting. “Double shot cappuccino with almond milk and a butterscotch shot. I spent too much time in Starfleet Command on Earth the last few months, their coffee tastes have stuck for a bit.”

“Kingston laughed and gestured to the chairs. “Have a seat.”

Before he sat down and while he waited for the coffee, he turned his attention to the plant. It was the only one in the room so it drew the eye. “What is it?” He motioned to the tall plant, “I’ve never been good at botany, plants don’t quite work the same between my hands as machinery.”

Janna grabbed their orders and smiled as she set his cup down and took a chair herself. “It’s a ficus benjamina, also known as a weeping fig. It’ll get a bit taller yet, but I like having something green in here.”

“It breaks up the blue and draws the eye nicely,” Ros smiled and nodded, “I’d expect it’s the focus of a few of your patients in a difficult moment. It’s pretty.” Once she had sat down, he immediately did the same. The gesture wasn’t an attempt at asserting authority over her as some may have made it by pausing a moment longer, but a simple gesture of respect for her and her position. While his records indicated the man could be blunt, stubborn and difficult towards authority figures when friction arose, they also noted that he acted with respect and old fashioned chivalry towards his peers.

She sipped her coffee, her grass green eyes gazing at him. “So, you’re our new Chief Engineer. By choice, or assignment?” she asked.

“Assignment,” he admitted and picked up his cup. Pausing in his explanation he took a sip and winced. “Ah that sweetness gets me every time, it’s like a slap in the face from someone you just can’t get enough of and want more.” He grinned and then lowered the cup, his eyes moving to fix gently on Kingston. They were intense eyes but intelligent with a brightness to them that belied the deep green.

She couldn’t hep but smirk slightly. Guilty pleasures: everyone had them.

“I spent a few years working for Starfleet Intelligence, and before that was Chief Engineer on another Starship. My department was rather busy, these are interesting times after all but the powers that be decided that after a fair number of successful operations and no rest, I needed to take a break and return to regular duty.” He sipped his coffee again before continuing, “The Athena’s Chief Engineer had just been promoted to Executive Officer and the position was open, and you have an Officer, Nightstalker, on board who the Office is familiar with. Apparently, this ship has it’s fair share of intrigues,” here Ros paused and raised an eyebrow slightly as he looked at her, making the statement a question.

Hands wrapped around her mug, Kingston nodded. “Indeed it has. The kind that most people would believe we made up. It’s an adventure for sure.”

“Command, I believe seemed to feel that any extra support for that side of things might come in handy, alongside the need for a new Chief. Don’t get me wrong, I am out of the Intel game officially. I go where the paperwork points, I have nobody around to tie me down so here I am. I travel light.”

Another nod and a sip of her coffee and Janna considered him deeply for a moment. She was only starting to be able to see where this new sensory capacity of hers was active and where it best not to use it. But in sessions seemed like fair game, even if she didn’t exactly have control over it. “Well, I can say we’re glad to have you. Being multi-skilled certainly never hurts on this ship. And the Athena is a beautiful design. Lots for engineers to enjoy.”

“Tell me about your last position and if you have any concerns about settling in here,” Janna said.
