Jennifer smiled slightly, glancing down at the pot. She used a hand to waft the scent towards her face, also testing the temperature by hovering her hand over the liquid. “Seems hot enough,” she decided, turning off the burner and carrying the pot over to the sink and pouring the hot chocolate into two large mugs. She also added a little creamer to cool it down just enough to drink, then handed the nice, full mug over to Orvos.

“There’s always more to discover, I think that’s the best thing about life.”

“That’s absolutely true!” Orvos replied emphatically as he raised his mug. “To discovering more.” And with that, he took a sip.

He pulled the mug down and gave himself a moment to consider their situation. “I don’t know how long we will be here to be fair,” he stated. “Is this merely a relaxation program? Or is there something more you do here?”

“There’s no programmed events, if that’s what you’re asking,” Jennifer replied, stepping back into the main area - with the fireplace and all that. “It’s just a house and the surrounding couple of miles. No people. Simulated day-night cycle, weather matching my favorite summer - the one when I was twelve - and enough food to keep me fed for… I’m not sure. A while, at least.”

Orvos nodded understanding as he heard rain resume once more outside. The pitter-patter of it was soothing.

She sat down on the couch and took a sip of the cocoa before putting it down. “I do hope the issue gets fixed though. As much as I enjoy your company, we have jobs to get back to at some point.”

Orvos nodded. “Yes, and unfortunately I should be the one out there doing the saving.” He sighed as he sat down, frustrated that he was helpless inside a holodeck. He resolved himself to his fate as he took a sip of cocoa. He grinned. “Delicious!” he said taking another sip.

“It had better be,” Jennifer grinned in response, then grimaced as she remembered their situation. “Ugh, I should have worn my commbadge, then at least we might have a method of communication with the Ship. It’s not been long enough for anyone to actually notice something is wrong…”

As if just realizing it, Orvos spoke. “You’re right, and we really ought to change that somehow.” His mind churned at what could possibly be done.

Suddenly there was a knock at the front door. Orvos stopped and slowly turned to look at Jennifer.

Jenn looked at the front door, frowning. “What…?” She stood up, glanced at Orvos, then looked at the door again. “There’s no Holopeople in this program…”

“It could be another trapped officer though,” she realized, chuckling briefly before heading over to the door and opening it up.

Wallace

Orvos watched as Wallace greeted the newcomer.

A woman stood in the doorway. She was 5‘9” with straight brown hair that fell level with her chin. She wore a dark blue, form-fitting jumpsuit that accentuated her feminine curves. She seemed nervous as she gave her hand a brief wave. “Hi, my name is Katrina. May I come in?”

Jennifer looked over the woman, frowning slightly in confusion. She didn’t recognize Katrina at all, although she hadn’t looked over the entire roster so who knows. “Ah, yes. Of course… come on in,” she stepped back, gesturing into the room. “Ah, I don’t mean to be rude, Katrina, but who are you? And how did you get here?”

She left the question open. If the woman was a holoprogram, it could be interpreted as her asking how she got to this cabin on the lake. If she had wider knowledge, it could just as well be a question about how she’d gotten into the holodeck, or even onto the ship.

Katrina shook her head. “I’m still pretty new to the ship, Engineering department. I had time still before reporting in for duty, so I thought I would get some holodeck time in. The computer said this one was empty, however when I arrived I noticed the program running. Soon after the doors sealed shut and wouldn’t open.”

As she took in the house, she then added. “Oh, maybe you didn’t mean all that? For all I know you’re part of the programming, although I recognize your faces as senior staff. Oh, I hope I wasn’t…you know…interrupting something?”

Orvos grinned and turned back to face the fire, offering no help rather humorously.

“Great, now there are three of us stuck here,” Wallace let out a long sigh. “It was my program initially. Lt. Cmdr Orvos is in the same boat as you,” she used his full rank, giving the man a slight glare although he was looking away and couldn’t see it. “He thought it was empty, came in, got locked in. The computer isn’t listening to us, so I guess we’re all stuck. Hopefully engineering realizes we’re missing at some point… missing the Captain and the CE, that’s got to be something they will notice…”

Katrina sighed at the situation. She was fully aware of what was happening, though the captain and chief engineer were unaware of that. It was after all, her own doing regretfully. She was bound by the ones who sent her here, to do their bidding. “Well, what all have you both done so far? To get out, I mean.”

Orvos blinked a few times, staring at the fire. Truth be told, they tried the arch and left it at that. What more could they do? Find the edges of the holodeck? Worth a try maybe?

He stood up resolutely with a grin. “We tried the computer arch and accessing the computer with our own ship’s command to no avail. Now that we’ve ‘had out tea’ it’s probably about time to do some more figuring out. Best thing I know is try to find the edges of the holodeck and access some computer panels somehow. Unless we’ve got some better ideas?”

“This program is rather large,” Jennifer commented, glancing out the window. The rain was gone and the sun was getting low in the sky. “In regards to the physical area. It’s about ten kilometers in diameter, and we’re pretty close to the center. I don’t know a lot about holodecks, but I know it’s possible to go on a very long walk in an outdoor program and not reach the edge.”

Orvos thought aloud. “I wonder if there’s anything else in the program that might prove useful?” He then stepped outside to get a feel for the environment. “If there’s some way we could disrupt the holo-images, or even cause a glitch in the computer system, perhaps we could find our way out?”

Katrina spoke up this time, following him outside. “It sounds plausible, but couldn’t it also lead to use being further trapped in here, or with some worse environment?”

Orvos sighed. “Yes, it could, but it might be worth the risk. We honestly have no idea if someone is looking for us. It’s clear we need to do something. I suppose if we don’t do that, maybe the computer arch is available somewhere else in the program? Perhaps a hike might get us somewhere?”

Katrina looked to Captain Wallace. “What do you think, ma’am?”

“We could always try calling for the arch again,” Jenn said with a joking grin, which then slipped into a more somber expression. “But I agree with the Ensign about this. It might be rather dangerous to mess around with the program. There is no risk in this program, whereas others might have more deadly situations in play. I know it’s a frightfully common thing for a holoprogram to have glitches and get the safeties turn off…”

Meanwhile, outside in the corridor…

“Are ya sure ya can’t get the doors ta open?” Lt. Greer, one of the Engineering team, asked his fellow engineer, who was elbow-deep in the wiring.

“I’m sure. Something’s stopping the controls from working and every time I get past a firewall, there’s another one!”

OOC: We could actually split this off into two threads. :)

IC: Inside the holodeck, a storm was beginning to brew. Light that was cast through the trees suddenly dimmed as clouds started blotting out the holographic sunlight. Thunder could be heard in the distance roiling closer. In the opposite end of the sky a green aura-like cluster of clouds slowly moved high in the sky. Orvos had seen clouds very similar to it in the past, but there was no way those same clouds were in this program.

Orvos turned to the pair. “We have another storm coming in. Maybe the arch will show up elsewhere? You said it’s a big program. Why don’t we take a hike away from the thunder clouds coming in. Maybe to those strange green ones over there?”

Katrina then chimed in. “I think that’s a good idea. Maybe if we hurry we can avoid any terribly stormy weather?”

“You said you had hiking gear, right?” inquired Orvos.

Jenn shook her head. “Not really. I don’t usually do a lot of hiking in this program,” she explained. She looked at the clouds, then over towards the greener ones. “It’s worth a try, I suppose. I’ll see if there’s anything in the cellar that we can use for hiking gear.”

And with that, she slipped out of the living room, opening a door in the wall and going down into a cold cellar. A single lightbulb lit the room, and she began rummaging around for backpacks, water bottles, and other things that could be used as hiking gear.
