“Okay,” Janna said simply. “And remember it won’t be perfect and no one is asking you to be either. We have a lot of work ahead of us, but we’re going to take it one tiny step at a time. Which means we need to get that physical taken care of. Doctor Grey said he’d be glad to do it here, so I’m going to go inside now and let you two chat for a bit. When you’re ready, come inside and we’ll begin. Any questions before I go inside?”

Viyara thought for a moment and then shook her head. “I don’t think so. Maybe later. It’s still a lot to wrap my head around,” she replied and then looked at Daggum, wondering if he had any questions.

Daggum shook his head. “Nope, I think we are all on the same page.”

After Janna went inside Daggum sat down and looked at Viyara. “You know… we may have had an… interesting start… but I wouldn’t change it for the world. Any world. Unless it caused you difficulty. In which case I am really sorry. I really do want you to be happy.”

Daggum

Placing her right foot on the seat of her chair, her right arm wrapped around her leg and her chin resting on her knee, Viyara looked at Daggum and shook her head. “You didn’t cause me difficulties. Not really. Though … everything that happened between us … I think it contributed to me being here now. But … as much as a part of me wishes I wasn’t here … I know it’ll help … and as little as I want to admit it: Even if we had never met and the Captain Ghubari and I never had the run in with the Counsellor … sooner or later I would have had a break down … just without someone at my side who cares about me.” Hugging her other leg to her chest as well, Viyara fell silent again; her gaze suddenly unfocused.

Daggum sttod up and moved to her side, sitting and putting an arm around her. Hugging her tight, but not too tight, he said “A couple of someones who care, actually. And between us all? I think we can help you work through this. And if we can? I think you are going to be much happier. And maybe even a better scientist. Definately get that promotion. I’ll pin your pip on myself.” and he winked at her.

Suddenly feeling a lump rise in her throat, Viyara turned her head to hide her face against his shoulder while swallowing and blinking a few times. After a moment or so she mumbled, “That would be kinda nice, but I really don’t think that’s ever going to happen.”

“Now… you ready to go knockout this physical thing?”

Taking a deep breath and then exhaling slowly, Viyara looked up at Daggum and nodded. “I suppose so. Or at least as ready as I’ll ever be. I really don’t like physicals…” She let her voice trail off and looked across the garden, her mind wondering back to her boarding evaluation when she arrived on the Athena and the questions Doctor Grey had asked then.
