Karina kept herself bent over the body as another creature leapt over her. She watched a drop of blood hit the ground beside her and a small poof of smoke. Whatever was in the blood wasn’t liking whatever it hit. Just then a drop landed on her arm. With odd fascination, she watched it press the material of her tunic down against her skin from the height and gravity of its decent. Had it been ice water, she would have felt cold… had it been normal blood, she would have felt a second of heat before outdoor temps took over…

But a hiss fell from between her lips as she felt a heat unlike anything she expected, much less ‘should have’ felt. “HEY!” She half growled under her breath as she grabbed the material in a quick handful and rocked back on her heels trying to ball the fabric up to stop the blood from touching her flesh. “Well, that’s a nice defense mechanism,” she thought as she clawed at the material till it stopped trying to force its way thru her skin.

Huddling with some of the patients and trying to keep herself and them sheltered, Janna could see the chaos off in the near distance that was the battle for all their lives. “Doctor Grey!!” she shouted as loud as she could and pointed to the area where the security and tactical team had seeming had a break in fortune. But it looked like people were very badly hurt.

Moving to reach someone else, Kingston felt something brush her hand and an intense burning sensation started to work its way through her skin and tissues. “Arrrghh!” she half-screamed. If the toxic blood did what it did to being with normal blood, what would it do to hers? “I need some alcohol over here!” she called out, protecting the the patient she had moved to help.

Benjamin had been running around with the two modded hyposprays, now spraying an alcohol mixture at the patients. He looked at Kingston as she called for him and viewed where the blood leaked over his patients. It was good luck that he’d focused on cardio very much lately that he had the stamina to continue so much running. He went quickly by his patients, spraying the source of their infections. “Kingston, catch” He tossed one of his hyposprays over to the nearby Counsellor with care. “Hold it a few centimetres from the infection” He called to her.

There was a dull thud and a rush of air quickly replaced with a blast of returning warm air from the pod’s explosion. They were closer to it than the security team who had been holding the line further out. Meryidiyth screamed out a warning, “Incoming, take shelter”, she grabbed a nearby cot bed and held it over herself and nearby patients as the kickback from the explosion rained black blood and tentacles in concentric circles around them…

Janna had had no time to douse her wound before the warning came. Cursing inwardly, she dragged her patient and herself over towards a rock, knowing it was useless. All she could do was protect the poor man and pray to Gods she didn’t believe in that she might survive what was likely about to happen to her.

“DOOOWWNN!” Ben yelled at the top of his lungs as he jumped over a pair of patients, grabbing a long towel and covering most of them with it. He might not be able to save all of his patients but the closest would do. As he fell down he realised he was no longer holding his hypospray. Now was the first time he’d been really still since they evacuated. His overwhelming fear was catching up with him. He was going to need to keep moving otherwise he’d be less than useless.

When the Doc yelled ‘down’, all Karina could do was lay down along the length of the man she was with, cover as much of his body with her own as she could, and bury her face in his chest. As everyone took cover, the pairs and trios of bodies covering and protecting one another like lovers caught in mid embrace, she bit her lip and prayed that whatever was happening would be over soon. She wasn’t sure how much more she could take.

As she squeezed her eyes shut, tears managed to still stain her cheek and drop to discolor the front of the tunic of the unconscious man beneath her. She bit her lip harder and tried not to cry out.

As soon as it began, it was over, but the aftermath remained. There were people burning in black blood everywhere. Meryidiyth was still standing holding the cot like an umbrella, tears streaming down her face at the pain in her arms that had been exposed to the blood rain. Thankfully much of it had been incinerated by the blast but by the groans of pain coming from all around there was going to be a lot of work that needed to be done, and quickly.

When chaos ends, there is a moment of silence. A deafening absence of sound when held breaths haven’t been released, and sobs are still being held in lest anyone else think the person weak. It was that split second that made Karina raise her head and look around.

The body below her groaned slightly but thankfully the man was unconscious. Probably a blessed thing. She rocked back onto her heels, wobbled a moment, then decided sitting on her backside was much steadier. A wince hissed from between her lips as the world came to life around her again. Names were hollered as people were reunited, others were crying out in pain, and a few were speaking in soft tones to soothe the others.

Karina took a moment to look down at her arms. Abrasions from the blast and the caustic blood were burned across her arm in bands as if she had been dragged across the hard packed dirt. She touched one of the worst spots and winced. “At least it’s not burning thru…” she murmured to herself. A thought hit her like a boulder and she glanced around. Moving up to her knees she cried in panic and fear.... where was he? “BEN!!!” She didn’t realize in her panic that she was calling the doctor by his first name.

It took Benjamin a while to get up. He looked at the patients he’d thrown himself over, they were alright, scared but mostly unhurt. He carefully removed the blood-covered towel and placed it upside down next to them. He looked around for his Hypo and just as he spotted it he heard his name being cried out. He quickly grabbed the hypospray and got up trying to gauge the location of the caller.

Not too far away, a dozen or so meters to his left was the new doctor, Young woman. For a moment he struggled to remember her name, that had never happened before. Niles, Karina. Fresh from the Academy He finally reminded himself. After a moment of just looking his instincts kicked in and he ran towards her, the adrenaline seemed to be back as he no longer felt the immense fear of earlier. He knelt next to his junior Doctor “What’s wrong” He asked as he looked her over… Her arms, she was covered in abrasions. He grabbed his tricorder and opened it. The screen was cracked, not enough to destroy it but enough to worry him. He’d never seen a cracked scanner before, he didn’t even think they could do that. He grabbed the handheld out and hovered it over her hands carefully.

It was a good thing her face and body were red from the blast and abrasions. Karina felt a blush and heat, not attributed to those factors, well up in her as Doctor Grey came running up with concern on his face. She managed to swallow and steady herself before speaking. “I… I think I’m fine. I was worried about you.” She lost her composure and had to look away. It wasn’t like her to scream out like some wayward child missing its parents. Hoping to cover her stammer and ridiculous outburst, she nodded to the man before them. “I managed to get the lung drained and the tube in, but he is going to need far better care now.”

Realizing she was probably yammering, she glanced back up at him and shrugged. “I’m not good enough to recover all this without you… I’m sorry. I’ll get him back to the medical tent and see about trying to recover the triage tent. I’ll let you check on the others.” Her arms had scorch marks from the caustic blood, burns from the blast pushing then drawing sand and debris over her, and from the whole ordeal in general. But she brushed it off and tried to pull a couple torn remnants of her shirt over her arm to ease his concern.

Benjamin frowned, gently grabbed her hands and held them still “Don’t be a damned fool Niles” He grabbed his hypo from his belt and held it slightly above her left hand “I’m gonna need both of those operational.” He was going to press the button and stopped “Oh his is going to sting” He said as he started the alcohol spray across her arms, carefully taking out all the sources of the poison blood. After a moment he reholstered his hypo and reached around for the medical kit he had around his chest. He thanked whatever power out there that he hadn’t lost it in the commotion. He grabbed a dermal regenerator out of it and started working. “When I’m done I’m going to need ye to continue spraying the people, I’ll handle the lad,” He said indicating the collapsed lung patient.

Karina winced, but then bit her lip as she realized what the Doc was doing. She murmured a thank you as he gave her the order to go help others while he took over for her there. A slight smile lit her face as she realized he wasn’t upset at her. “I’ll take care of them, Sir…” She waited till he handed over the hypo again and slowly got to her feet.
Giving the mad a nod, she started to head towards others who seemed to be in need. She needed to get to as many as she could… and soon.

There was a lot of noise coming from the direction of the Guardian, a hubbub of voices calling out to each other, finding loved ones, mourning the dead. Three feet to Dr Grey’s right a tentacle twitched.

As she turned to help others, something out of the corner of her eye moved. Thinking it was someone she hadn’t seen, and perhaps they needed help, she turned to it. “DOC!” This time it wasn’t panic, but warning, that filled her voice as she took a step back. Her mind momentarily caught between fight or flight as she tried to comprehend that one of those ‘creatures’ was actually alive… and so close.

Ben looked down and half jumped backwards, almost tripping over himself “Faahh!” He exclaimed, more in annoyance than panic “Yeah, let’s try to keep the tentaclee beasts away from my patients, let’s get any available hand to removing it, we need a sterile enviorment to work” He looked at Karina “How are ye doin’?” he asked wiht concern.

The disembodied tentacle twitched a little longer and then stopped abruptly. Meryidiyth was looking straight up wordlessly at a huge dome of crackling energy that was slowly descending upon them, centred over the Guardian of Forever.

She bit her lip as he back scrambled. She wasn’t sure what she had expected, but that hadn’t been it. A slight giggle escaped her lips despite trying to hold it back. As his demeanor changed and suddenly he was genuinely concerned for her, she nodded and stammered as heat rose on her cheeks, “Yes, Sir.... I’m ok. Really.” She smiled and nodded at him with thanks.

Meryidiyth’s looking up had been caught by several near her. That, in turn, made others look. By the time Karina saw, she frowned and looked up. The dome encompassing them was slowly lowering. Her giggle and smile swiftly disappeared. She rose and moved to stand beside the CMO. Unconsciously, her hand moved to touch his arm in a worried way. “Grey.....” The word was solitary, yet filled with volumes.
