Janna had retired soon after Viyara, and did a few minutes mediation sitting crosslegged on her bed. Then she slipped under the covers and was asleep within minutes. She did however have a quiet alarm that would wake her in the middle of the night.

When it went off, Janna padded to the kitchen, grabbed a glass of water and noticed the place was quiet and Viyara’s door was closed. And since she wasn’t needed, she went back to her room and back to bed.

In the morning, Janna awoke a little later, clearly needing the sleep. Normally she was up at 0600, but today she found it was already 0813. Ah well! She ran her fingers through her blond curls and moved out of her room and into the kitchen, hunting for coffee.

At some point during the night, Viyara had slipped into a deeper, more restful sleep. She too slept longer than she normally did and when she woke up, the scientist felt rather disoriented at first. Till the previous day’s events came back, including what had brought her out here into the garden in the middle of the night. Sitting carefully up so that she wouldn’t fall off the swing canopy, she slowly rotated her head and then stretched a little before she rose to her feet.

A few minutes later Viyara walked slowly into the kitchen, feeling stiff and tired, wondering how much it would show in her expression and body language. Of course she could put on a wide smile and pretend that she was chipper and well rested. But she didn’t want to pretend around Janna. If that was even possible right now. So she allowed herself to be seen without playing things up either. “Good morning Janna,” she greeted the other woman and leaned against the door frame.

Janna turned, mug in hand, her eyes sweeping over the scientist. “Coffee is ready if you’d like some. How are you feeling?” She herself was fairly well rested, despite her one intentionally wake-up, though she knew she’d need a good rest day after they left the holodeck.

“Oh yes, please!” Viyara replied as she walked over, grabbed a mug and poured herself some coffee. Turning to face Janna again, she drank a large sip and then said, “To be honest, I’m feeling rather tired and stiff. I kept waking up and eventually went into the garden and dozed off on the canopy swing. I’m not sure when I went outside, but it must have been a few hours ago.” A frown appeared on her pale face as she took another sip of coffee. “I’m not used to sleeping this restlessly. Sure, I’ve missed whole nights of sleep, sometimes more than one in a row. But that was almost always because I was working on some project. And definitely never because I kept waking up.”

“It’s normal and not unexpected,” Janna said with a slow nod. “Your mind is trying to work through a lot of emotions and sometimes it’s just a lot to process. It can take a few days before you find a new equilibrium. I’m not concerned about a night of restlessness, but if it persists beyond a few days, then we can talk to the doctors about it.”

“I sure hope it won’t last more than a few days,” Viyara muttered and then sighed softly before taking another sip of coffee.

Janna smiled softly. “If it does, then we can take certain measures to help. But what we can do now is restructure a bedtime routine to help your mind let itself rest when it’s rest time.”

Sipping on her coffee, Janna was thoughtful for a moment before she spoke again. “So, my thought was that we could have breakfast, shower, get dressed and all that. Then I would invite Daggum over for coffee and we can chat. I have something I thought we could do as a group that our conversation last night inspired. How does that sound?”

A soft smile started to tug at the corners of her lips and eyes and some of the fatigue she was feeling seemed to disappear at the mention of Daggum’s name. “I’d like that,” Viyara replied softly. But quickly that smile seemed to falter a little as she felt tension creep up into her neck and shoulders. “How much does he know about what’s going on, about why I am here? And how did he react when you talked to him?” she asked a little nervously, her gaze fixed on the content of her cup.

“He’s worried about you, but glad you’re getting help. All I told him was that when you and I chatted I was concerned enough to hold you for assessment. I did ask for a couple observations related to self-harm and your dissociation, because observations from friends and family can be very helpful too,” Janna said simply. “How much you want to say when he gets here is up to you, but learning to share what we’re processing is a good skill to practice and I do believe Daggum is a safe person to share those thoughts and feelings with. I will disclose that he did want to me to be clear on what had happened between you two and I will tell you what I told him: unrequited love can be difficult, but if someone is worth having in our lives we tend to find a way through it. You both need to give yourselves time, and with a bit of time and the work we are doing, hopefully you can frame your feelings for him in a clearer light.”
